Phil Minshull might be the worst athletics commentator ever. It's not that he has no style. He definitely has a flair for drama and storytelling. The problem is that his commentary is often completely divorced from the actual reality happening on the ground. He routinely misidentifies athletes, countries, finishing order, times, distances, fouls, qualifications, basically anything and everything. If you were only listening to the audio, you wouldn't know anything was amiss. But if you're actually watching the video, you'd be constantly confused because what he says does not line up with what you're seeing. He'll say "runner A & B are neck and neck" when in fact runner A is miles ahead and runner B isn't even in the picture, and he's misidentified runner C instead. A runner gets his/her heels clipped and falls, and Minshull's commentary is "oh that runner tripped over their own feet." It's like dude, are you even WATCHING the event? Just as a small example, at 1:01:14 we see the Pole Vault men coming out. It clearly says onscreen "Pole Vault Qualification A". Anyone who follows athletics (and definitely the commentators) would recognize the pole vaulter Emmanouil Karalis who walks past the camera just as Minshull declares "the 800 meter runners starting to come out", followed shortly by Mondo Duplantis (1:01:27) who is the most recognizable pole vaulter in the world. At 58:03, he misidentifies German runner Lea Meyer as British runner Lizzie Bird, despite her wearing the distinct yellow and black shirt with "GERMANY" written on it and a bib saying "MEYER". A German outfit looks completely different from a British outfit, and "Bird" is not spelled "M.E.Y.E.R." His alternate-reality-commentary goes on and on like this the entire time. It's absolutely baffling. And then there are things that aren't factual errors but matters of interpretation. He describes this twisted, wriggling, contorted pole vault at 2:25:30 as "nicely done" and "a solid vault". His commentary is just... so bizarre. It's like he just utters random words.

I cannot understand this course yet. Is it, fortgiving and wants them to 'pace' it, or is there not enough room for mtb racing speeds, and they are suppos'e'd to be self 'merit' and they pat them on their backs.? That is an ugly repulsive track.. The gay boys, laugh and pedal away, loving anothers 'black ebony' frames..🥲😢😒😗

So the big question becomes, did you win despite bad technique or because of it?

Well, his "technique" allowed him to run fastest and cross the finish line first, so i would guess that would answer your question :)

1:25:00 WTF the runner in lane 6 (de Oliveiri of Portugal) took a dive, literally. I don't mean he tripped or fell. He intentionally threw his body through the air like he was jumping into a swimming pool. How is this even legal?

I keep coming back here to watch this wonderful 100m race of Gina Lückenkemper. Not only is it full of emotions, but it also is a perfect example of how our job as official timekeepers works. Those 22 seconds after the race where everyone is waiting for the timekeepers (in this case Matsport Timing) to do their job to determine whose torso crossed the line first, and why the unofficial winner time (here 11.00) is merely an estimate are so fun to watch and a great example to explain to laymen what our job actually is!
