I drove this track last summer. Beautiful scenery that can get you killed if you think it's a good idea to take it in while you are driving. Those cliffs are no joke. I somehow managed to able to get myself in a position to have an oncoming car pass me on the left with death on my right hand side. Fun times. Glad you were able to experience the waterfalls, and what not, i was on a mission just to finish the route. I don't have a desire to go back. Nice to have checked it off the bucket list though.

This IS a marathon, or a run, and not a race, right?? When you got bogged down at the creek, I was reminding myself of that. If it were a race, then chaos would have ensued at the creek, I imagine 😆 I enjoyed how you came across when updating your "goal"! "Ok, well, now I am shooting for 7 hours. That's okay....." Snarky, yet, "motivational" 😆🥤

@SippyCupAdventures I didn't get it on film, but there was a touch of chaos at the river 🤣. A handful of folks were crossing next to us, out of frustration of having to wait. The problem is it was overhead deep there, so they all got drenched 🤣. I had zero clue about all the slow downs I'd encounter. Hopefully, my video can be valuable for those looking to run the race. I really loved this run. The single track was legit gnarly though, I did not like that section. I tried to run it, tripped, and almost fell down the hill. It was a good mile of about 6 inches to walk and not fall down this hill. Admittedly, I saw people sprint this section. This was definitely more of an adventure than a race for me. On to the next 🍻

@@ChooseAdventureCaliforniaStyle Yeah, not sure what race organizers are supposed to do. They love promoting their location, certainly, and the chance to just run, yet, they can't really change the footprint of these trails without city/county approval and all the red tape that goes with that.

@SippyCupAdventures I know. Personally I think they should stagger the start time. There was nearly 500 people starting at once. There was only 45 people in my race. If they would start each individual race 30 minutes apart There would be very little slow downs. I felt bad for the people turning around at the water only station. They not only got stuck in the beginning but had to now take on the back of the pack on their way back. Awesome event but they definitely could fix a few things. And the aid station at Henry Cowell's, why don't they move the aid station by the bathrooms and make that part of the course? That walk was a little ridiculous.

@@ChooseAdventureCaliforniaStyle As I have mentioned before, I am an event planner, by trade and ALL of these little nuances drive me nuts! This is why you do these events, or, one reason why, in entering these, to see how organized they are, or not so you have a better idea if you're going to do them again. Of course, location has a lot to do with it. If you and your family have a good time, separate from the event, then a few miscues during the race are acceptable.
@ChooseAdventureCaliforniaStyle

@SippyCupAdventures agreed. I will admit that after my first ultra (24 hours), I figured all races were put on with such high attention to detail and care. Now that I've done 6 ultras, I can say that most races seem thrown together. I don't know if it's a money issue or permits or laziness... the volunteers are always amazing, helpful, and really add to the enjoyment of the adventure. A lot of the issues in these events, to me, seem like easy fixes, but they don't get fixed. So far, my biggest complaint about these races is: #1 The aid station food sucks! I'm running for over 6 hours in the mountains, and you're feeding me snacks. How about real food. #2 bathrooms. For example, this race had 4 Porta pottys at the start. 500 people and only 4 toilets. Then the next toilet was 7 miles away. When you're constantly eating and drinking, you gotta go often. So my big things to fix in all these ultras are: better food, more porta pottys, put aid stations close to the bathroom, and write a brutally honest description of the course. Like, expect to be delayed 30 minutes in the beginning, at the river... with all that being said, I loved this run, I love these events. I'm sure it's a ton of work to put these on. There's definitely room for improvement. Maybe with ultras becoming more popular, we'll see some improvements.

Thanks, Jeff! I was very unaware of all the slow downs. I was so impressed and inspired by those 50k runners in this race. Despite the hold ups, they ran a great race! They must've been running 6 minute miles when they could. I ran everything runnable, I gotta work on my speed 🤣. In the film, when I talk about not being the fastest... that was a pep talk I was giving myself. I felt like I wasn't good enough to be out there. I knew a positive attitude would get me to that finish. I reminded myself to have fun, no matter what happened. And I did, I had a ton of fun. I grew as a person on this one. Something these ultras gift us; to know more about ourselves and how to be better. The journey continues. Hope your training is going well. On to the next adventure 👊💥

My family were regulars up at Wrights Lake in the 60's when I was very young. On one of our visits we did the hike up to Twin Lakes, and I was about 5 years old, and it was pretty tiring. We passed a couple of German Nuns (wearing habits, no less) on the way up. They sure looked tired. Anyway, once we got to the first lake my uncle said he'd pay my sister and his daughter and me $5 if we all jumped in the lake. We did it. BOY was it cold, even in the summer heat. I don't think we were in any longer than it took to submerge our heads and scramble back out. Very fun memory, but my uncle chizzeled us on the $5. We were regulars at that lake for at least four consecutive years. I caught my first trout from Wrights Lake using a hotdog I couldn't eat. I still have a faded Polaroid of me proudly holding the poor little trout. Here's where it gets strange. Our last visit. After a day of fun and hiking in Desolation Wilderness, we were sitting around a campfire at our lakefront campsite, in the dark, just listening to the crackling of the fire, roasting marshmallows. And then it happened: a great howl from across the lake, maybe a quarter mile beyond. The howl ended. There was a silence, and we were staring at each other when the howl repeated. This happened over and over again, maybe ten times. I remember my parents and aunts and uncles all looked unnerved. I was scared, as were my sister and cousin. When the howl finally ended, my oldest uncle said, "Oh, its just a wolf. Don't worry about it. They are afraid of fire." I'd heard wolves before that night, but I'm sure it wasn't a wolf. The next morning as we got up to pack ourselves for the drive out, right at the base of our campsite I found a line of fish heads. They looked like they'd been bitten off a trout, and lined up. The heads were about 25 cm from the water, and the eyes on the trout were clear, like they were extremely fresh. We didn't catch any fish the night before, so the fish heads were not from us. But they were evenly space along a straight line next to the water. Someone dared to do this in the dark, right at our campsite, and we didn't hear them. That turned out to be our final Summer Adventure at Wrights Lake. After that we went to a place up by Dutch Flat, but I can't recall the name. Dutch Flat was a lot closer to Sacramento, so it was a shorter trip. Now... fast forward to 2023, and my wife and I visited the Great Redwoods at Cowell Park in Felton, CA. We did some lovely hiking, and when we left the park, on our way out I noticed the Bigfoot Museum on HWY 9, just outside the park, and we stopped and went in for a visit. We were sniping and joking as we walked in, poked fun at some of the images, etc. And then I got a shock: there was a recording playing, purportedly of a Bigfoot, howling, over and over. The recording sounded just like the howls I heard at Wrights Lake in the 60's. I'm not saying I heard a bigfoot at Wrights Lake. But the recording at the Bigfoot Museum sounds just like it. Who knows... At least if it was a bigfoot that howled and lined up the fish heads, I know we both like trout, so at least we have something in common.

Hey! Thanks for sharing. Wrights Lake is awesome, and I plan on doing this hike again and making it to the waters. We have a little place in Santa Cruz, and I've done filming up there. I've been in that bigfoot museum, as I am a fan of the topic. I do think Bigfoot might be a thing. My mind is open to it. I've had 2 strange experiences that I've had. 1 was when we were camping at Big Basin near Santa Cruz. Late at night, I woke up, and it was WIERD! It felt like I was in a soundproof room, but we were outside in the forest. Have you heard of the OZ effect before? That's what this was, ZERO sound. In the distance, I heard a howl. Minutes later, sound returned to the forest, I'll never forget it. 2 I was hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains. I felt like I was being watched. I heard a strange animal sound and then a freaking massive log got thrown at me! It must have weighed 40lbs. It hit a tree next to me and practically disintegrated from the force. I still have no clue how it happened. It didn't fall, it had to of been thrown. I hiked outta there. I don't hike there alone anymore. Who knows. It's definitely interesting. Cheers!

@@ChooseAdventureCaliforniaStyle Thanks for responding. Very interesting. Funny thing... after our original visit to Cowell, we liked it so much that we relocated to Lompico, Felton, CA. My wife does 8+hour hikes in the area, and I try to get in a hike with her now and again, but not for the distances she goes on her own. In our 10 years in the area, I haven't seen or heard evidence of Bigfoot outside the Bigfoot museum. On the other hand, that day at the museum, they had a map of the area, and there were fairly recent pins on the map to indicate evidence right in the area of Lompico where I live. I ride my motorcycle out Zayante to Bear Creek Road to get to work in San Jose, and my trip out is in the dark. So far I've seen nothing out of the ordinary, and since I'm on a motorcycle I'm watching fairly closely for deer and other wildlife. Between my wife and I, if Bigfoot likes the roads and the trails, one of us should eventually encounter evidence of one. Personally, I hope it doesn't happen. If they really exist, they sound about as lovable as an angry grizzly.

Thanks! I wanted to record SO much more but I was so tight on time! This course was freaking tough!! To technical for me. So much of the forest running I didn't feel comfortable running due to roots. Can't wait to finish the next race.

Just attempting such a race is a win in my books!! Awesome!! Maybe they'll figure out another way to mark the trial in the future...maybe have it mapped electronically and can follow on a cell and get alerts if one is heading off. Now it's off on the next adventure!!

Thanks! Overall, I still had a great day. Also learned a lot, like every race. That one hill, nicknamed "the stairs" is extra brutal!

You did great ! That course was tough on its own. The messing around with the markers made it dangerous !
