When I see or hear players like this I have two reactions, contradictory as it happens: Should I practice in hopes of achieving this level of skill, or should I give up knowing I'll never get there?

i can't even imagine such enduring such tediousness.... for what? An award. This isn't music. This is just pain. Sounds like he certainly has some beautiful musicality, but you wouldn't know it from playing this garbage.
@CCMthemusicman5 ай бұрын
Please explain what about this isn't music. I learned this piece for fun when making this recording and just happened to have it available to post for these auditions. I get a sense of accomplishment when I am able to perform a piece of music like this with musicality and technical accuracy. It assures me that I have some degree of skill at what I am doing. I am often required to play difficult technical passages in the professional ensembles that I play with and music like this helps hone my skill in that area, just as I would practice lyrical studies to help with that style of playing. "... for what?" Umm, an audition? Performers almost always need to audition for roles in an ensemble, production, movie, etc. The students who can perform this etude at the highest level are awarded with placement in some of the top high school honors ensembles in the world. They do it because they strive for excellence in their music making and want to do so with other top-tier young musicians. Also, what a generally stupid and close-minded comment. Musical taste is subjective. Just because you don't like this music doesn't mean that it must be deemed as "garbage." Grow up.

@@CCMthemusicman I studied trumpet for 7 years at the Hartt Conservatory, a top music school in New England. Technically, I learned how to play trumpet, but I also learned how to hate playing trumpet because this is the kind of garbage they always had me play. Not one time did any of my 5 different teachers there suggest that I listen to or transcribe a single recording. Not one informed me of trumpet performers that were in town that month. Not one told me to dance to trumpet music. Not one played with me during my lessons to, you know, have fun playing trumpet with me. It was only after I started paying 1/3 the price for a freelance teacher that I fell in love with trumpet again. He had me listen to and transcribe Clifford Brown and Miles Davis and that turned everything around. I was learning technical skills while having my soul lifted rather than crushed. It was nice. Maybe mine is an unlikely scenario...... or maybe top rated music schools really do, in general, think that music SHOULDN'T be enjoyable. I mean, if you merely sit there listening to music, god forbid you might get lost in its beauty and entirely forget that you have ABSOLUTELY POINTLESS technical studies (excuse me, etudes) like this to perform for your teacher next week. Now that I think about it, it actually makes sense that I received zero listening assignments in 7 years at Hartt. After all, all they ever had me play was technical GARBAGE like this that no one would ever want to listen to anyways! You get my point, hopefully. I mean dude, when you look up "Etude #1 Wurm 26" you're the guy. YOu're the only one that has played this. It wasn't played by Clifford Brown, Chet Baker, Miles, Wynton, etc.... it has been played by YOU, not to entertain or inspire, but to give yourself a sense of accomplishment and self assurance of technical skill (your words). Now that you have that, please play us some music. You clearly have the technical skill to do so :)

@@tpstrat14 This whole comment is basically just you saying that you SUBJECTIVELY don't like this kind of music, which is fine in and of itself, no one is MAKING you like this. I mean I personally don't get in my car and turn on my "trumpet etude playlist" on Spotify. It's also fine to realize that what music schools generally teach isn't what's for you. There are a lot of things that music schools do that I don't think are conducive to having a successful career as a musician. But you're throwing around a lot of ignorant statements like they're OBJECTIVE fact. Who are you to claim that this is or is not music? It's clear that you like jazz, cool, but you're stating that this is not music just because YOU don't think it is? It's ironic because you seem just as bigoted as you make the music schools out to be, just on the other side of the aisle. Do you think that a top-tier, respected musician in today's society would go around making claims that what other musicians are doing isn't music just because they think they have the authority to make that decision? As stated previously, grow up.
@G83XАй бұрын
Isn't it an etude. I personally get quite sick anytime I try to listen to a piano or sax etude so I wouldn't expect anyone who wasn't a reasonably competent trumpeter to listen past the first few seconds. There were places where the musicality could have been better but this is still a pretty darn good show.

A couple of notes: - In measure 22 I mistakenly played the fifth 16th note as a Bb instead of a D. I recorded this etude a year ago and honestly didn't realize that I learned that partial wrong until just a few weeks ago 😅 Make sure y'all get back up to D for that note! - I take a breath after the first note of measure 9 instead of measure 5. Personally, I like extending the first phrase without a breath until measure 9 because it cadences on the i in measure 9 instead of on the V (or dim vii) in measure 5, the former of which sounds more final. The marked breath is also such a short ways into the piece that it feels unnatural to me to breathe there. However, if you want to be safe for the purpose of the auditions, breathe in measure 5.
