movie was lame. the killer was clearly obvious from very start. the entire wooden golem nonsense was a giant plot hole - just send the guy the bell from the start. and the ending was goofy. save your time and watch something else.

Yoooo I'm first. I still wished that Disney put in an end credit scene showing that Whim would become Captain EO(Michael Jackson). They kept highly implying it but never made it happen. 😢

@TheUnprofessionalReviewer yeah, even during D23 this year the director Jon Watts came on stage wearing a Captain EO t shirt when he was talking about Skeleton Crew. Even my boy Fuzzball was locked up in a cage on that pirate space port.

I feel like Hunter and Becky’s dad were both really insensitive, her dad should have been concerned about helping Becky work through her greif and trauma instead of basically just saying “well, get over it.” Hunter asking Becky to climb again left me absolutely dumbfounded. From what we see in the beginning of the movie, it seemed like Becky was already afraid of climbing to begin with, so she would definitely be terrified of it after Dan’s death. Hunter then continuing to push Becky to continue climbing when she clearly didn’t want to also is wild to me. Plus the pull ups scene, it’s very strange to me that a person wouldn’t think that they could be pushing too hard. It almost makes it feel spiteful. Also unrelated, but it’s kinda weird to me that Hunter wasn’t at all concerned with the safety of the climb. We get the impression she’s a pretty experienced climber, so it confuses me how she wouldn’t have noticed the safety concerns of the climb

thought it was alright noting special and wont rewatch it anytime soon. I liked the idea and concept but could have been done better. the teen characters were cliched. Seen it done better. I was born in 1993 had little more 90s experience. The opening of the AOL you got mail voice makes me feel old. The guy died last month. I was 6 years old in 1999 when they thought Y2K was going to happen. But I don't have much of a memory of it. My reason for going to see this movie was to get out of the house and take a mental day off from personal things.

“Save the cat” is an expression used in film as a moment when the hero does something defining to their character. In this case she literally saved a “cat” lion cub (close enough) Although to be fair, I didn’t really use the expression correctly in the context of that sentence haha

I did enjoy the expansion with her character! She definitely has more of a defined character in the movie version. I’ve heard that she has a much larger role in the second half of the show so hopefully that translates well. Interested to see her reaction to Elphaba’s transformation by the end of Part 1!

Great review - I left the theater thinking all citizens of Oz are trash lol and Galinda is very complacent and easily manipulated (also if I was Elphaba I wouldn’t have forgiven her as quickly for the things she’s said and done but I get it for the story)- I wonder if she’ll have any remorse in part 2 in going against her friend

Chloe East’s character is the one who mentions that if she could choose what to be when she resurrects, it would be a butterfly and land at the fingertips of their loved ones so they could feel close to her. There was also a very bright light shining in the background of that last scene, which leads me to believe that Sophie Thatchers character never resurrected to save her and they all ended up perishing in the basement. The final scene was just a final manifestation. Great review!

I do wonder if you could potentially just lie face down, ignore everything around you and not do anything for days on end. Assuming you're mentally stable to begin with anyway. It seems to need some amount of cracks to infiltrate your mind and the more it scares you the more those cracks open up. If you literally do not react to anything and lie face down with your eyes closed and continue doing so no matter what, like if you suddenly find yourself not doing that. Of course you need water/food/sleep so it could try to get into your dreams or mess with your sense of touch/taste when you drink/eat but I'm not sure.
@retsaMinnavoiG3 ай бұрын
I have zero problem with the third act being in her head. Trying to figure what is real while it's happening and trying to figure out afterwards if that was also a fake out is fun. For example it seems like everything from the backup dancers attacking her to coming out on the stage was the fake out but was it actually from the scene where the thing forced her face into a smile in front of the mirror and she said she wouldn't wear that outfit. Was the guy trying to help her real at all? Did that speech where she knocked the old lady off the stage happen? We also see during the final act that it potentially mimics what is happening in real life like putting on the jacket to escape than the hospital gown at Pizza Hut. Was that her putting on her jacket to travel to the show and later changing into the costume, was that thing she came out of cold and that's why she thought she was in a freezer etc. etc. We also see at the start that somebody that is stable and mentally strong was still lucid at six days and actively fighting it. I think of it more like a mystery movie with horror, a whodunit with demons.
@SuperEndiku3 ай бұрын
You nailed the issue with the ending perfectly. The first 2/3 is fantastic but having large chunks of the story be a dream is a waste of the viewer’s time. Also, like with the first movie, when the protagonist has zero chance against an all-powerful entity than can perfectly alter perception then it amounts to a snuff film. Even the most terrifying monsters should have flaws or rules that can be potentially exploited, even if the character does die in the end. The demon is too perfect and too powerful, at least the way both movies write their leads actions.
@algebraist19973 ай бұрын
Your point of "no return" being the dancers out of the closet scene is misjudged I think. Remember that Gemma never came over so it already built a fake world where Gemma answers the phone, comes over, sees her mother, etc. I think from the beginning of infection the entity can do anything it wants in your mind. Think back to the first Smile, it was even very early on able to get her to kill her cat. And this is for me the problem of making a franchise out of this, because you cannot have suspense with an all-powerful entity. Some might say, well you have Halloween and everyone knows he comes back but people got to survive in the franchise and what was happening was real. Here it's all in her head as well.
@JacobKimble-dc7iu3 ай бұрын
I agree that the last act being completely inside Skye's head feels like wasted time, like that part of the plot is meaningless.
@algebraist19973 ай бұрын
It seems like the entity is all-powerful so this removes suspense for us. I kept thinking from the beginning, as I saw Smile 1, that whatever she sees could be a lie from the beginning and that just willpower won't work. So it was just watching a disaster play out and there was no suspense.
@retsaMinnavoiG3 ай бұрын
@@algebraist1997 I don't think we ever get an indication that willpower is the deciding factor. I think the deciding factor is definitely how mentally stable you are.

Not really. To me it is scary that You think that You are free of the being only to be like haha this is still a dream and you're not free. Didn't You watch the Short film that inspired the movie? The source of the horror IS the concept to not be able to tell if something is real. If you're not able to tell that you aren't interactive with your loved ones
