Thanks for posting this. You brought back lots of good memories. Does your stat on the number of residents who cycle include or exclude the UC Davis campus? Typically, the campus is excluded, since it is not actually part of the city. But over 8000 people live on campus and 66000 live in the City of Davis, so that could make a big difference. Although many undergraduates have cars, you don't generally need one at all if you are a student - especially one living on campus. Getting around campus by car is intentionally very difficult (cars are not allowed in most of campus), so a bike is the best option for most people. A lot of residents, especially students, also get around on Unitrans, the student-run bus service. There are also many people who only use their cars when they need to go to someplace outside of Davis. There is one part of the downtown area where I would not bike. Russell Blvd has two lanes, lots of cars, and not much space for cyclists. Fortunately, you don't need to bike on it to get around downtown. Many streets with better protection, including a completely separated bike path along 1st street, run parallel to it. 3rd street is just a short distance away, and is very nice to bike on. Biking around downtown can be a little bit tricky for the first week or two after the Freshmen arrive on campus, especially around bike circles, since they are just learning how to get around. But other than that, it is very easy and safe. I've felt far safer biking there than any place else that I've been.

Thank you for this great response. Perhaps I was quoting just the base Davis resident population without the average student population. Let me review that. Great insight into your town! I’ll be back and referencing this comment for my future trips. I appreciate all of this detail!

I've heard about Davis before, but this is my first time seeing it. It's interesting that the bike infrastructure isn't that different than anywhere else in the US. It's mostly that the coverage and connectivity of the network is way better. This could easily be the bare minimum for all cities in the US, but sadly it is not.

I have lived in davis for 40 years and appreciate an outsiders view on our city. I just take it for granted our bike lanes and dont notice how different we are. One small edit, the uc davis hospital is actually a large teaching near downtown sacramento. The hospitals in Davis are sutter davis hospital for people and the ucdavis vet hospital for animals on campus.

Born and raised in Davis here! Great video but I did want did want to emphasize that the bike lanes primarily serve students (from elementary through college). Your points about the unsafe sections of downtown and not being able to bike long stretches aren’t very relevant because Davis isn’t bike friendly for the sake of bikes themselves but rather the kids that rely on them to get to school. Anyways here are a few cool things about growing up in Davis! Most roads on UCD campus are completely bike only. The main purpose of that first overpass you rode over is to allow kids living in south Davis to get to Harper Jr. High. As far as I know, every single school and major park in Davis are connected to the bike loop. Biking and driving aren’t the only options! Davis has an incredibly extensive bus system considering its size. It’s also free for all Davis students. There is a bike detector between UCD and downtown that counts how many bikes pass by every day. That Dutch inspired intersection is actually one of my least favorite lol! So confusing if you forget to press the button. However, it’s very useful when there’s a high volume of bikes heading east from the high school. Because traffic lights are the main limiting factor, it takes me the same amount of time to bike to the high school that it does to drive!

Spring is a great time to visit Davis, so green and lush everywhere. If you ever go back you should check out the roundabouts in the campus core around lunchtime on a schoolday, particularly the one outside the silo. I would be shocked to see any intersection in California that moves more people per minute than that little roundabout. Thousands of people on bikes, walking, on busses, and campus service vehicles + delivery trucks flow seamlessly through an area no bigger than a typical 4 way signalized intersection, except theres no infrastructure except some paint and plastic bumps to guide people. At the start of every school year, newcomers are taught the rules of the road by hecklers standing on each corner, booing people going for going wrong way.
@TrailsofCalifornia
@TrailsofCalifornia Ай бұрын
I'll add a visit to that roundabout to my list for next time I'm in Davis! Do you have the street cross section for the roundabout? I'm thinking a timelapse during during the spring could be a fun thing to try recording if it is truly that busy!

Rode this yesterday. This time I was able to find where the trail continues from Main Street in Placerville but after crossing under the freeway and going past the old train station/bus stop I missed the trail head continuing the El Dorado trail. Instead, I kept going up Mosquito. Mosquito has a bike lane which quits not too far up the hill but I kept going. Steep, skinny and not much of a shoulder. Good thing was not too much traffic and drivers were kind. It kicked my butt going up but lots of fun coming back down. Now that I'm watching your video again, it looks like the trail head is across the street from the train station/bus stop? Another ride is in order. Some day I'll figure out how to get to Camino.

I am so happy to hear that you made it to the trail and had a great experience! Sorry about missing the trail entrance. The ride kicked my butt as well going up. It was a very gradual but steady incline all the way through. The quick return trip however was well worth the effort! Lots of fun. Yes, the trail is just a quick trip over the train tracks from the parking lot! Ride on!

Inspired by your visit to revisit this trail on a beautiful chilly and windy fall day. Started in El Dorado. One warning: The crossing of Missouri Flat Road is closed off. You can work your way through the construction site if there are no workers on site. The good news is this construction is actually building an overcrossing of the busy road, so by next year your caveat would have been addressed!!!!

In contrast, UCLA in West Los Angeles is totally car-centric. While there are plenty of bike riders on campus, to get to it you must drive there and parking is very limited despite many parking structures all over the campus. Cycling to be like the Netherlands is much more than bike lane infrastructure. It is the attitude of car drivers toward bicyclists: sharing the road and understanding their needs. I live in Rancho Santa Margarita California where there are plenty of bike lanes but I get honked a lot for using the left lane to make a left turn or using the whole car lane because the bike lane is blocked. In this city, the car is king of the road and bikes must stay out of their way.
