That board model GA-5AX pinged my memory. a few months ago, I picked up a lot of 10 motherboards. mostly slot 1 and AT socket7 board's. The Gigabyte GA-5AX is in that lot. It has a K6-2+ 450 in it.

WXP didn’t originally support USB 3 and the USB3 controller required the driver specifically designed for it. It could not revert to USB2. It would have been easier to pre-copy the WXP installation files onto the SSD with enough boot files to boot to the installation. Used to do it all the time.

Last night, I spent more time than i want to admit exploring the CX0. 1) I start with the CPU itself. I found information to the CPU and then cross reference the CPU to other manufacturers using the Processor. 2) I started looking at the details of system boards. Jetway J7F4 Versa Mini-ITX Motherboard. Jetway started support (their website) starting with XP. Owners struggle with same issues as the CX0. I then came across Gigabyte MB that uses the chipset with a noted driver fix for sound. It states that the USB (before any driver) interferes with installing sound driver. It states to either install sound drivers before USB drivers or disable USB while installing drivers. After all drivers are installed, you can now proceed to install USB 2.0 driver. I will try various drivers out this weekend if I find the time. After I nuke drive and start fresh with no USB before installing windows.

I'm driving myself nuts to Win98se install on the cx0. Boot disk getting i/o error on boot and using usb cd, I get windows needs at least 16mb of memory (it has 512). The bios on the cx0 is odd. I am figuring that is my issue. I've done this countless times on other TC just this one is stubborn. Any tips?

Try this: create a usb bootable with the "Windows 98 SE boot disk" (basically is an ms dos 7.1). Then from there, format the hard drive. Connect the hard drive to another PC, extract the W98 iso to a folder. Boot again from the usb ms dos in the CX0 and install W98 from the folder, is easy. If setup fails try: Setup /p i

Not every country around the world has the majority of it population exposed to the world wide web. At least in my area, from a 3rd world country we didn't have mainstream access to internet until 2010. The entirety of my high school life which is around early 2000s rely solely on Microsoft Encarta for research.

I had similar issues installing XP on a laptop. From my notes, I had to use an image on a USB stick, use a usb2 socket, and set the bios to sata compatiblity, legacy only instead of UEFI only or both. I think it may have also required the CD to be inserted by the time the install process was using the XP gui instead of plain text. I'd previously also tried cloning an install from a similar age & hardware desktop pc, but it didn't work. Cloning worked for another very different(older, agp instead of pcie, different cpu etc) desktop pc though.

You could just pop the circuit board out of the ssd and it may fit in the original d.o.m port, just cover the back with insulating tape to avoid shorting it on the screw point. Many if not most ssd circuit boards do not fill the case it is in, they are mostly to comply with mounting standards and to avoid shorts. Ps. Xp (32bit) works best with 3+ Gb ram, the graphics can use the rest so 2 x 2 Gb would be better. Avoid xp 64 bit as it is fraught with problems and never worked well on anything.

There was an option 4, of course: Linux. You'd need to install something compact, like Antix or MX Linux perhaps, a 32-bit version. It would get you a modern web browser, at least.

On these newer units, make sure that you have enough memory, on my 7020 it will take up to 8GB of DDR3 Sodimm chips.. (2 X 4GB) and I replaced the original SSD with a Sata to NGFF adapter and went with a 512GB SSD. was able to install W10 Pro with no issues. I also have a wyse R90LW thin client and right now it will only run WXP on a 2GB SSD (44 pin IDE drive) I am planning on getting a 44 pin ribbon cable for it and use 2 80GB 2.5" IDE Drives. the unit supports SATA, except the cable to upgrade the unit has been discontinued and is impossible to find... as they are a special build. but, all in all... the Dell Wyse thin clients are really nice providing you can upgrade the memory and the SSD to a decent size. you can find WXP through www.zone94.com and you can get W10 and W11 there too!

try this it might work for you! what you do is take the drivers and go to Local C Drive and double click it and make a Folder called WYSE and in that folder put all the drivers there and use a program like WinRAR if they are in a zip file and extract it there then go to device Manager and click on each hardware and tell it to Update Diver and click the 2nd option browse and direct it to Computer, Local Disc C, Wyse, Drivers and chose the folder and it will scan it and most time it will install the Drivers its like forcing the drivers without trying to install it due to wrong operating or hardware restriction these Wyse are little bit weird and sometime is a bug or a written permission from Wyse or dell to reject the driver but my method usually works cause your not trying to install it your just letting it check for the INF folder and then it forces it to use them drivers...

Sometimes you can get away with a faster FSB overclock (K6-2+, K6-III, K6-III+) by disabling the motherboard cache in the BIOS, because the cache chip(s) can't keep up with the bus. But as you said, things running on the AGP and PCI bus can also crash due to being so far out of spec :) Great video, love this era of hardware!

Since I already had an HP t5530 running 98SE, I decided to pick one of these up for a different experiment: How convincingly can Windows XP be made to fake Windows 98SE? The answer is "Beautifully well once the login process is finished". (You go 95% of the way there using Windows XP's built-in theming options... including using the System control panel to apply "performance" tweaks to turn off things like transparent backgrounds on desktop icon labels, and then apply the Inexperience patcher to fix things like the Start Menu icon and use TweakUI for XP and X-Teq X-Setup Pro to apply the last few registry tweaks that have no UI by default... just remember to turn off things like the indexing service, BootOptimizeFunction, and NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate when running XP off flash memory to avoid spending write cycles on mitigations for problems you won't have anyway.)

I believe you missed something and I was actually looking forward to seeing how you managed it. 😃When it comes to those adapters that let you use ATX power supplies with an AT motherboard, they bring out the green and black wires for the power button - PS-ON and GROUND respectively. The problem is that the power button on the ATX case is momentary, while the PS-ON signal from the power supply needs to be grounded the whole time the computer is running. To sum it up, the way the PC works at the end of the video is - you press the power button on the case, the computer comes on, you take the finger off the power button, the computer shuts off. You'd need to keep your finger on the power button indefinitely, to keep the computer running. The way this needs to be solved is by physically changing the power button on the case from a momentary switch to a toggle switch that keeps the circuit closed after being pushed and that's easier said than done. To keep it pretty, you'd need to find a toggle switch the same size and form factor as the momentary one mounted on the case.

Thank you very much for your videos about the Wyse Cx0. I also have one of these thin clients here and now I want to make a Windows 98 retro system out of it. I found your videos very useful and helpful. I am 64 years old and have seen the entire development, from the 286 to the 486 and all successors, as well as from DOS to Windows 11. I'm sure i'll feel nostalgic when building a Windows 98 system. 😃

If the sound card in the thin client or the USB sound card have a line in input, one option would be to connect the output of one sound card to the line in of the other. I have an old Pentium retro PC with two sound cards (ISA for DOS and PCI for Windows 98) and this worked very well.
