Alright, thank you for incidentally solving a minor head scratcher for me. Rotala does seem rather sensitive to harder water with a slightly elevated pH. Mine has been stunted for years in my guppy and mystery snail tank. Other plants are doing excellent, but the rotala is leggy, leaf bare, and sickly. Sagitarria, frogbit, sword plants, crypts, moss, jungle val, anubias, and emersed pothos and monstera all going full jungle. but not the rotalas.

The plant is toxic to anything that consumes it, whether it's humans or livestock. If you do have any livestock that may munch on plants, then I would avoid this plant. Apologies, I should have explained that a bit more in the video. Also, for some reason, the previous replies I tried to make weren't getting posted, so apologies again if you've seen this multiple times already 😅

It's the only plant my tetras won't eat. Infernal tetras are the worst culprits, but fire ant tetras, serpae and red phantom appear to have taken a liking to munching on soft plants as well. Even anubias' leaves get chomped in half before they have the chance to unfurl.

so uh, are my fish safe when i cut these plants in my tank?
@TropiscapeAquatics7 күн бұрын
They should be fine as long as they font fully consume the leaf or any trimmings. While some Lobeline may leach into the water upon trimming, the amount would be pretty small and would get diffused in the water to not pose an issue. I've had this plant in my tanks for a very long time, and I have not seen any major deaths that I would associate with it. I've got guppies and shrimp in the tank with Lobelia in it. That being said, I'm not a biologist. So, take all of that with a grain of salt, as it's all anecdotal on my part. Also, apologies if you're seeing this comment more than once. For some reason, KZbin doesn't fully publish the reply...

@TropiscapeAquatics7 күн бұрын
It's a possibility, but I would look I to things like water quality/parameters first instead of blaming the plant for now. I've had this plant in my tanks for a long time, and they have Orange Sakura Shrimp in them. I've got about more than 50 or so in that tank, and the main cause of them disappearing is them somehow getting inside the filter. I've got a few that are also berried at the moment!
@ChadGardenSinLA9 күн бұрын
I have the mini version and I love it! It's a real trooper that does well in low tech setups. I've only used it w/ hygger LEDs 24" & 32". They give off red & purple when they get a lot of light, especially in shorter tanks. Mini is more compact, can be pruned to carpet out, and requires less maintenance.

Has anyone experimented with putting soil in a filter media bag?
@TropiscapeAquatics11 күн бұрын
If you mean putting it in a filter bag and using that as the base layer for the substrate, then yes. I believe MD Fish Tanks has done it before. I've also done it in the past. It makes it easier to remove if you want to tear the tank down or do any re-scaping as tons of soil won't be released upon uprooting plants. That's something I should have mentioned in the video. However, the only issue is finding a large enough filter bag to accommodate the large amount of soil, while also have tiny holes in it that are able to let plant roots through all while keeping the soil in place.

Nice video!! Btw, what wattage or inteny of light do i need for my low tech planted 50 gallons aquarium?
@TropiscapeAquatics12 күн бұрын
Wattage isn't really a thing to be concerned about when it comes to plants. Considering that it's low-tech, you don't actually need much intensity, but that depends on the types of plants you're growing. For example, if the tank just has Anubias in it, you can have very little light, and they would still do well, but will suffer under high lighting due to their growth speed. The same applies the opposite way. If you have some Anubias, but also have some fast-growing stem plants like Hygrophila Polysperma, then intensity needs to be adjusted in a way that doesn't overwhelm the Anubias, but still provides enough light for the fast-growing stem plants. Do remember that higher intensity means that more plants will use up more nutrients and any available CO2 in the tank. If you're lacking in these two departments, then you will have algae and plant deficiencies. All in all, it really comes down to the types of plants you have. I have a video on balancing which goes more in-depth on this topic if you like to learn more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJqaknaZjpWGiJI

Thankyou for an excellent video.!......Im experienced aquarist ( tropical/goldfish) but recently had a sudden algae bloom.. turned off lites . covered the 200 lt tank etc.....after that my PH suddenly dropped to 6.4 ...( KH , nitrate and GH ok).. Used API proper PH 7.... wouldn't increase PH to 7.....KH increased to 12+... I had to carefully add API cichlid UP 8.2 to slowly bring PH up to 7 ..took 3 wks... but now cant lower the KH to 8...the algae bloom has gone but water now cloudy even with 20% w/changes...PH is now set and stable but KH too high.. tap water is oo.oo KH..... Wll small partial w/changes lower KH please??.. getting a 'bit desperate" now!!... thankyou
@TropiscapeAquatics13 күн бұрын
It should, over time. That's if there's nothing in the water that may increase KH. Alternatively, you could use RO/DI water and remineralize it to the proper water parameters. However, looking at the instructions for API Proper pH 8.2, it says that it increases KH alongside pH. While I'm no expert when it comes to cichlids, I do know that a higher KH value prevents any dramatic pH swings or prevents the pH from dropping too low, which might be beneficial to cichlids.

Can I do 4 hours on morning and 4 hours in evening because more than 4 hours my water temperature goes 28,30 degree because of light
@TropiscapeAquatics23 күн бұрын
That should be fine! Lots of people do this, and it's called "Siesta Lighting" schedule. However, the average lighting break is usually 2-3 hours. It's a little unheard of to hear that the lighting system can raise water to those temperatures. Does the temp change at all if you were to raise the height of the light, if it's possible? If water temp goes down by like 1 or 2 degrees, then the light isn't the issue, and it could either be a heater (if using one), ambient room temperature, or something else.

Good video but more plants the better for your fish and tank.
@TropiscapeAquatics24 күн бұрын
I agree, but it depends on a few variables. One of them being the types of plants in the tank. A tank full of anubias isn't gonna do much compared to a tank full of Hygrophila Polysperma. Growth speed definitely plays a part on nutrient uptake. Either way, all it really comes down to is balance.

I think you're missing the point of the video. The main idea I wanted to express was that H2O2 does not solve the underlying cause of algae. Yes, it will kill BBA and is fine to use occasionally, but it won't do much in the long run if the main cause is not fixed.
