Honestly, even if you were planning on doing absolutely nothing the next day, it's unreasonable for them to think less than 24 hours' notice for an unplanned shift is reasonable. I wouldn't go in for an unplanned shift without a few days' notice. You can be a reliable employee and a team player without doing that -- your employer is not entitled to your every waking hour.

The problem with your cats behavior & always begging for food is the introduction of canned/wet food. They become feral for it. I made that mistake with cats before. They would act just like that. Never gave another pet cat canned food and they have never behaved that way. I feel bad for them when they become addicted to it. Its like they are so discontent always looking for it. Just giving insight to their behaviour. They're not bad kitties

No, you're not being unreasonable they need to give an adequate amount of notice, and the night before eis not it should not be a week or 2 weeks notice jobs will use you and walk all over you if you allow it don't allow it it's not worth it I'd find employment elsewhere if it continued respect goes along way and clearly they have no respect for their employees.

As a Manager--I would never tell an employee they had to work with that little notice. I might ASK if they're available to, but if they say no then that's perfectly fine. They have a life and I don't expect them to put it on hold at a moments notice.
