It starts off on a good premise. You're a merc in training, your rival is revealed from the get-go and you have clashing personalities but the same goals. The dream sequence sets up a plot hook that's going to have a great payoff in the end by the looks of it. Disc 1 leads up to the reveal of the main antagonist, but then it starts going off the rails in disc 2. Disc 3 is a complicated mess and disc 4 is actually pretty baller. It's like several authors wrote different parts of the story and stapled it together into the mess we got. It starts off strong and just falls apart the deeper you go. Triple Triad is still the GOAT minigame and Junctioning is hilariously broken. The limit break system was too abusive, and while the leveling system with monsters growing stronger with you was great in theory, it makes leveling NOT worth it. In short, interesting ideas with the game mechanics, but the story devolves into putrid ass with deus ex machinas and disappointing reveals, and a messy, confusing love story thrown in. Very experimental, but not all of it came together well in the end.

So thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I bought Sonic Origins on the Switch (which is just a repackage of the first few games) and so I completed the original game for the first time ever the other day!

It''s not about hate, it's about legacy. Squaresoft released games like FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 3, FFVII, Finale Fantasy Tactics and Xenogears from 1994 ti 1998. FFVIII had a terribile script, dull characters, an anonymous antagonist and maybe the worst character development system of the series at that time. If you compare FFVIII to the jrpg made by Square previously, you understand the reasons for the criticism.

You should try Legends 3. It has a traditional level up system. Weapons don't break. And you have MP for magic.

This game was my childhood. My first RPG was FF4, and when I saw this in a secondhand electronics shop, I begged my folks for it. I quickly became disappointed that is was nothing like the SNES title that I loved, but eventually, this game grew on me and became a constant companion anytime we had a family road trip, and even many times when I was simply at home.
