TL;DR: Slow tempo - wrist motion Medium tempo - rebound push-pull (to me looks like a start of the Moeller technique) Fast tempo - fingers

Hi - l love your content, and have to say I'm primarily a snare drummer trying to write for and teach quads. With that confession out of the way, crossing over on two drums at the sticks seems to contradict what you say about the ability to get some stick height on the 3 and 4 drum crossovers when you're at the wrist or higher. Would I be further ahead to teach high school quads to cross over two drums at the thumbs or hands? Thanks!

I never realized how important it is to get the sticks back up to the original height. I think this is why I keep hitting my sticks/wrists together when I try to do crossovers!

Excellent stuff dude! Grown ass adult trying to relive his marching glory days. Hey, how would you compare the Vic firth heavy hitter quadropad to your Prologix? I really like the Prologix for the quiet, rims and look… But A. They changed the design and now It looks worse B. Hella expensive C, if the heavy hitter pads were good enough for Bill Bachman… then why go overboard? Also, laminates or no? Okay, interrogation complete. Cheers!

I know this is a year late but the very new prologix with the blue/green surface is PHENOMENAL. I've played on it it's definitely worth the price tag it's the best thing you'll get pad wise.

Saw this tonight and put it into practice for almost 4 hours straight. Not only did it clean up my scrapes, but it nearly brought my left hand up to par with my right, after struggling for YEARS. Thank you so much. 🤙🏼

I’m glad I found this series! Coincidentally, the entire series thus far I have had the “scrapes” section from Quad Logic in the back of my mind, which is what I am currently working on. I plan on putting these video tips to use before changing the heads on my drums and seeing if I notice a difference in the second year of playing them. Right now, the Pinstripes are scuffed and blurred and most of the wear is in the playing zone but there is also a lot of overshoot. I don’t even want to talk about the plastic residue on the rim between scrape zones. Looking forward to better playing and having the head wear patterns as physical proof.

One thing that we’ve identified for young lines is that they often don’t change physical position during rehearsal. Having the “center” always on the center doesn’t help the overall line’s ability to adapt to practical listening applications. We sometimes take the center and put them on the outside, or stagger the sections front to back forcing them to listen in to someone else, instead of everyone else listening in to the same person. Helps develop the whole line. Totally agree with listening to the world class groups, that’s how I developed my ears early on, and we do that similar to a football team watching film of an upcoming rival.

Hey, in the vid you said that the drop-catch would only be for mid-tempo doubles, and for doubles that are faster you use the fulcrum more. Would you be able to elaborate on how to use the fulcrum?
@JayJohnson4x42 жыл бұрын
for me it gets what I call floppy at higher tempos. think 2 strikes for every downward stick motion but the fingers aren't really doing a whole lot. However, there is pressure on your fulcrum. The stick is basically flopping up and the fulcrum forces it back down before the lift (up stroke) making 2 notes. It feels like cheating. Your wrists basically get still and your forearms start to pump up and down. Of course tap quality goes down. You can see that at @:52 and at @1:36. Sadly, flopping doubles is how I learned to double stroke roll even at slow tempos. Later, I had to learn to chop these slower doubles out with finger control with is pretty life changing for a drummer. Yes, confusing and annoying comment. Bill Bachman and Marcus Hawkins are masters at describing this.
@neb62082 жыл бұрын
@@JayJohnson4x4 I was taught those floppy doubles too, but that’s what I was doing for slow and medium tempos. I’m still in the process of getting better at keeping my fingers on the stick at all times for better control, I’ve gotten better at it for slow and medium tempos. But I have a hard time keeping my fingers on the stick and getting solid even more spacing on diddles at faster tempos, especially on my left, non dominant hand. When u go at fast tempos, do u just pinch the stick with your thumb and pointing finger and release the back 3 fingers and use forearm to push out those notes?
@JayJohnson4x42 жыл бұрын
@@neb6208 exactly. when your are flopping doubles it is all fulcrum and pumping forearms. Some people develop bad habits such as straightening their support fingers, middle, ring, and pinkie, while flopping. Try not to do this. The support fingers come off the stick, but try not to straighten or stick out your pinkie like a Brit drinking tea. I'm an old school marching instructor and it's a pet peeve of mine. LOL. Also, when your are developing better doubles by chopping (using finger control) ditch the pad and play on a pillow. Also, look up inverted shots by Bill Bachman. that helped me tremendously. If you can't find it just think of doing straight 8 notes on each hand while accenting, or better yet rim shot, the off beat.

I am good at about to a 100 BPM 16th notes maybe 105 but after that it just does to fall apart. I haven't been able to break that barrier. I just recently noticed that the hold the stick different in my left hand than I do my right. The stock in my right goes straight down the crease of my hand and the left to the side more. Trying to correct that is not going well but I see that you hold your stick like I do in my left so I guess it's not that big of a deal. It's just that my left is the weak hand and taking some time to get it up to speed with my right.

These are great videos! And for everyone watching these to learn more about quad playing, I would highly recommend buying the book "Quad Logic" by Bill Bachman. It is a great book that starts with the basics such as holding the sticks, playing positions, tuning, reading quad music, etc. From there is goes into every thing you would need to know all the way up to and advanced level with some of Bills quad solos at the end. The book in combination with these videos would be a great way to learn and become a skilled quad player. The book teaches the things shown in the videos and gives some exercises related to topic, and these videos are a good way to see the visual demonstration and explanation of it. Great videos! keep it up!

So when you take the speed up on your scrapes should you diddle the scrape or keep it all wristed out? (I’m a new tenor player if you couldn’t tell)
@TheQuadMethod3 жыл бұрын
It should be very similar to how you play diddles on one drum at that particular speed. Typically, people oversqueeze and over work on scrapes. There should always be a wrist element to your rolls but its contribution will decrease as the tempo increases.
