This is the link I watched kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3eqq6yvhbyfhrMsi=byfNnURalJWj6wTu I think there are pieces from both performances. We saw him play at the BBC Proms in 2019 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He was absolutely amazing. The Organ there is huge, 147 stops, 9,997 pipes ranging from the size of a drinking straw to 64ft

I don't know why, but more, and more organists are avoiding the organ literature, that is the great pieces composed for the organ by the great masters. One has to wonder why this movement is gaining so much steam, even at Notre-Dame.

I wonder why the original console, the tracker console, was removed? Or am I mistaken? I understand there is a mobile console on the ground level that the organ can be played from. I think the organ sounds fantastic!
@StoreeDensonАй бұрын
The original tracker console was removed in the 60s by Pierre Cochereau, who was the previous titulaire organist. The organ does not have a mobile console. But there is a separate choir organ, which is a temporary allen digital organ.

This is the Same Console Brought to the Cathedral back in 2012. After they removed the 1992 Restoration Console.
@drdylanmanАй бұрын
Thanks for your replies! I thought there was an additional console in the sanctuary that could be played as well as one in the organ loft (if you will). I think I was confused with another cathedral's organ. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

@@drdylanman The Fisk in Lausanne Cathedral has both a tracker console in the balcony, and a remote console at floor level, both five manuals. Latry played one of the dedicatory recitals - superbly - back in 2003.

What difference does it make to you if you can't hear the difference between an Allen and the Grandes Orgues de Notre-Dame de Paris?
@douglasjensen8986Ай бұрын
@@cliveso I have never heard an Allen. I have been to NDdP and heard the Grandes Orgue many times. So I was curious, assuming they would not use a poor-quality sounding instrument there.

@@douglasjensen8986 count the manuals: there are 5 of them. And look behind Oliver's head: here are the mighty chamades ! It is definitely the main console, but under an unusual angle (never realized that the chamades are so close, by the way) !

the problem with the first chorale is to not let it drag. Keep the momentum. Latry manages this very well. the first choral I learnt was #3 at age 16 - I understand why #1 is considered more difficult - not technically, but because of the length and ability to keep interest. first time I heard it, it was very boring. far too slow.Then I learnt it myself and played at evensong. keep it moving, no long long pauses.

During a conversation I had some time ago with Prof. Ian Tracey at Liverpool Anglican, I asked him why the 2nd and third chorales seemed to be more popular than the 1st. He jokingly replied, "Well for a start it's longer, and secondly it's harder to play" Lovely man, had the pleasure of doing some work for him in the cathedral, I hasten to add, NOT as as organist.
