You nailed it! I rode the Dalton in July 2019. The road salt (calcium chloride) is a gummy mess, so fenders need a lot of clearance. There are no switchbacks (due to the need to haul long sections of pipe), so grades are steep. I found Beaver Slide hill mentally harder than Atigun pass, because you can see the whole straight shot on approach.
@julianmadridadventures5 ай бұрын
Hello Doug, it seems that we have some similar experiences on the Dalton! Beaver slide is a very unique climb as far as highways go. Thanks for sharing and happy adventures!!

hi! I'm thinking of riding my trek dual sport bike, would you recommend it?
@julianmadridadventures5 ай бұрын
Hello! In looking at the bike I think that it would make it just fine. Any gravel bike should work on the Dalton, and I’d recommend having tires with some decent tread and thickness on them, that’ll go a long way in the mud!

Even though I am not planning a trip to Baja this is a quick informative video for anyone contemplating a trip there. You have put that PRIUS thru some stuff! Suspect you did somewhat resemble a local after the mudhole. If you were fluent in Espanol you could have passed for sure. A bit ironic getting stuck in a mudhole in the desert. Thanks for sharing, Randy/GA 👍👍

Would love to visit Baja. I’ve always wondered about the mix of desert and ocean, does it feel more humid than somewhere in Utah or Nevada for example?
@julianmadridadventures5 ай бұрын
The southern portion of the peninsula is definitely more humid, especially in summer. But up north it’s much closer to the dry heat of Nevada!

I've never ridden the Dalton or done any long cross country biking but I would highly recommend some glasses, be it sun or just clear safety glasses but vehicles going by on a dirt road are a recipe for eye damage it would seem. Good luck tho!
