Dear Doctor Dervaitis, I have a couple of questions to you regarding the IUD insertion by you: 1) Do you do this in the first few days of the patient's period? 2) Do you use ultrasound while inserting the IUD? Thank you!
@dr.kristinadervaitis7893 күн бұрын
1) It can be done at any time in the menstrual cycle. 2) I do have access to an ultrasound in my office and check IUD positioning with ultrasound immediately after insertion. This is an optional step, ultrasound is not mandatory during or after IUD Insertion. -Dr. Dervaitis

Is there a best time of your cycle for insertion? I’m curious if getting it inserted right after your period would let it all calm down before your next one?
@dr.kristinadervaitis7893 күн бұрын
No evidence for this. In my practice, I insert at any time of the cycle. Some practitioners advise insertion during menses as a way of ensuring the patient isn’t pregnant (in my office I do lab pregnancy testing) and because the cervix may be slightly more open during menses. -Dr. Dervaitis

For people with medical anxiety, is checking the strings enough to be reassured that it’s staying in the right spot? I’m wondering for peace of mind and reducing that anxiety, if it would make sense to have regular checks at the doctor’s office, or ultrasounds every 6 months/year - or if that is over the top and unnecessary? I want to get the mirena soon, but want to make sure I have a plan so I don’t live with anxiety about it after reading too many “horror stories.”
@dr.kristinadervaitis7893 күн бұрын
In my practice, I do a one month and also a one year check (and additional office visits subsequently if the patient has new concerns). If you feel your anxiety requires more frequent scheduled visits, you would need to discuss this with your doctor. -Dr. Dervaitis

I’ve had a kyleena iud for 2 years now, and my periods are extremely irregular. I never know when it’s coming or how long it will last and I often get periods twice a month. I’ve had my IUD checked to make sure it’s still in place and it is. Is this normal?

I’m 41 years old. My mom at the age of 43 was over period. Almost two months ago I changed my method from pills to copper IUD. It so weird because as soon I stopped the pills and got the copper IUD I have been fellings some flashes that just come a few seconds no more than a minute and then they are over. Next week I m going to have two months from the paragad insertion while I was on my period and since that day, I haven’t seen my period again. Contrary what they used to say my period has stopped with a copper IUD. I have had some spotting yes but really light. At this point I’m thinking seriously I have started the menopause. I m just giving some more weeks of adjustment. Maybe 4 more and then I have to consult this. I would like a video about experience menopause with copper IUD. Thank you
@dr.kristinadervaitis7893 күн бұрын
The copper IUD does not influence the onset of menopause. If a patient with a copper IUD stops menstruating, it is due to natural menopause, or pregnancy, or other potential causes of secondary amenorrhea (the cessation of menses). If you have questions about your period (or lack of a period…) see your doctor (this channel is not intended to provide personalized medical advice). -Dr. Dervaitis

Your videos made me decide to get the Kyleena years ago! I had only seen horror stories on the internet before, and your channel was so informative! I had it for almost 4 years and had it removed recently. I've been struggling with hair loss for about 3,5 years and after trying diet changes, supplements and doing blood work that came back normal, I finally realized the one thing that changed in my life over that period was the Kyleena. I found others online who had the same problem, and I decided to get it removed. I'm curious if you ever had a patient with the same problem? Kyleena says that less than 3% of people have this side effect, but I wonder where the statistics come from and how realistic they are.
@dr.kristinadervaitis78923 күн бұрын
Glad you found the videos informative! In my experience, hair loss is not a frequent consequence of Levonorgestrel IUD use. I have not had any patients requesting removal for this reason. -Dr. Dervaitis

@dr.kristinadervaitis78923 күн бұрын
It depends on how long the strings were cut. Generally, the strings should not be very low or near the opening of the vagina. If you are concerned about the position of your IUD, use back up contraception and see your doctor. -Dr. Dervaitis

@dr.kristinadervaitis789Ай бұрын
The chance of IUD expulsion is around 5%. It can happen for various reasons, but sometimes no particular reason or cause is identified. Sex does not cause IUD expulsion. There is always a small chance of pregnancy with an IUD (for the copper IUD- 6-8/1000 chance). You can get more information from this more detailed video about IUD expulsion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enanlKiLe5qLl7Msi=qblVJYEw-eedQa8C

I had that question about mentrual cup use in the first 20 days. It seems logical to me to avoid putting something up there during the "window for infection," but my doctor was unconcerned so long as it isn't in the 48 hours post placement. She was very good at explaining everything you are too, before and then after so it wasn't her just brushing me off or anything. It's up for me to decide, I guess. I don't know if I can manage my period without my cup (or disk rather) anymore, to be completely honest, I'm looking forward to it hopefully being completely gone.
@dr.kristinadervaitis789Ай бұрын
Yes, it is an individual choice. Admittedly, there is not any study evidence to prove harm from tampon or menstrual cup use after IUD insert (there is not actually even evidence to prove harm within the first 48 hours) My recommendation about avoiding tampons/ cups for 3 weeks is based simply on what we do know about the window for risk of infection (for which there is evidence). -Dr. Dervaitis
