Charge at home is around 3000W on plug to the wall charger it take around 1 to 2 day for a full charge ... guess with 2 time less power where the 1200 it not guaranty ... 1200W is actually Watt cred mean if the panel is perfectly align and use max power. See this is in urban area with building on the way ... in other words, your 1200w is actually more like 600w may be 800w in average, you will be lucky. charging a car with this only will take around a week ... You maybe think about taking in you far away lake place where you camp for a week then ... maybe you can come back after :-P ... Ah yes and in summer time only because in winter either your battery will deplit as fast as you charge ... Really paying 2000$ for this thinking about your independency won't reach your goal. If you add a 0 at the end of this power, we may start talking.

I like idea, and for me, there are no chargers at work so this would help offset any gas I might use to drive home. I have a Niro PHEV. So not really about charging at home, but rather, when not at home or near a charger this would offset gas usage rather than charging costs. One thing I can think of though, wouldn't it be better to have all the panels be level. If you charge pointing towards the sun, the rear panels will get nothing but ambient light and vice versa. Guessing best case is to park parallel to the sun path.

But you lose around 10-15% of range with an empty roof rack on Teslas… Great for boon-docking, camping, and short office commutes but doesn’t make sense to have this thing on the roof of the car for long distances…

Exactly what I've been looking for. There are some small cars with solar roofs built in but then you have to buy a whole new vehicle and you might prefer a different model. I like a few microcars like the Citroen Ami, Silence S04 and maybe Mobilize Duo when it comes out. Hope they make a version of this that is shorter so it can fit on any car length. Then it's perfect for any small EV user with minimal driving.
