Very nice. My son and I fished that stream back in 2010 as part of the HTC (Certs 248 & 149). Looks the same. Was even slightly discolored. I'm guessing we fished the stream you were hoping to reach. I struggled to get one there getting one right at dusk. Loved the vid. Thanks for sharing. Makes me think about trying to get another with the ones I didn't get last time.

I think you ought to have dealt with the dealer who sold it to you rather than the manufacture in this case, especially as it was brand new unfished.... Any of the dealers from which I buy would've had my back. Going the warranty route here was the wrong route --- which sucks because the sage of old just isn't the farbank sage of today. I hope it is fixed sooner than anticipated...

Enjoyed your video, could you maybe tell a veitnam era vet with disabilities where I might be able to do a little fishing from the bank on lower Sacramento River? I bought a fly rod a couple of years ago and still hasn't seen water. I don't have a boat and it isn't safe for me to wade. I appreciate any pointers you may have. Thank you very much, Robert

Great video. One thing you don't discuss explicitly is the effect of the gap on hook/bead compatibility. It has really frustrated me with my beads is that I can't tie a 3.8 bead on a size 16 hook, and even a 3.3 bead often demands that I build up a little thread ball behind the eye before I put the bead on. This is to prevent the bead crowding the eye, or in the case of the larger bead, from slipping over the eye and off the hook completely. I've built up a collection of slotted beads from 2.4mm to 3.8mm, in silver, black nickel, and copper. Oversizing the bead means I have to oversize the hook as well. I'm stuck with them. Not going to rebuild my whole collection, because it gets expensive.

Wow, this is interesting! I’ve stood at the same spot you’re fishing at back in 1974 when I was 9 years old and we lived in Dunsmuir. Those rocks get pretty slippery and we used those bugs that make a shell and attaches themselves to the rocks as bait. It’s always a calming experience out there. Then a couple years later we lived near the fish hatchery in Mt Shasta City over by the CHP office/facility next to I-5, during the summer I’d ride my bike to the hatchery and feed the fish. You could buy fish food from an old gum ball machine for 25 cents. Life for a kid back then was a lot different than today I’m afraid, very sad what we’ve lost. Thanks for the nice video sir.

I knew exactly where you were from the parking lot. That run at GR is pretty tough, Even moreso with high flows. There's usually a fish hiding out just above and to the right of that upstream rock. The river is too fast right now. Best to wait until it gets <1800cfs. Ive fished it at high flows, concentrating on slack water along the bank and have done pretty well. That spot at BG is where I taught myself to fly fish over 11 years ago. Tight lines!!

The McCloud Redband was a little frustrating until I fished in the early AM hours, especially at the Trout Creek campground. Toss a nymph with some flash and it was a done deal over and over again, and the creek only holds the purest strain redbands, though there are some browns far downstream where it slows and becomes a bit of a pond. And Trout Creek at the campground and Swamp Creek are really the only places you can legally catch one that would qualify for the Heritage certificate.

You shouldn’t ever walk through spawning gravel in thin water. Walking though either mud or on rock does not effect the river in any way. You didn’t do anything wrong that water was too deep for spawning beds to be there.

You should have known that the reason not to wade Hot Creek is because New Zealand mud snails were found in it (as well as other local waters). You have fished in multiple waters and I assume it was within just a few days of each other. If you did not treat your wanders or use a different set for each water, you may have carried the invasive species with you. Maybe, like others who respect that practice, you can learn to release fish from the shore. Yes, I caught the disclaimer at the end but the best response you could have made to others like me who called you on it is that you are sorry, understand the potential harm and won't do it in the future.

I have tried to remember this hack on the water and twice I have failed. I just realized what it was. When I tie this, I naturally make the tag shorter to save tippet. He makes it longer than the distance to the fly so he can swing the fly around. Definitely a super quick way to tie it.
