Ok, so how do you use a symbol like sigma in a function without mathcad treating it as a constant? I'm just trying to plot the gaussian distribution using the greek letter sigma, and mathcad turns it green and assumes it's the Boltzmann constant with units in W⋅m−2⋅K−4. How do I make the green turn to black?
@PatJHeffernan10 күн бұрын
@@DavidKonyndyk Try going up to the menus and, with the sigma selected, setting is back to “variable”.
@DavidKonyndyk10 күн бұрын
@@PatJHeffernan I'm trying that now, using the label styles as in your video "PTC Mathcad - Label Styles" It overrides me every time and keeps sigma as a constant. if I type 5σ=, it tells me 2.835x10^-7 kg/s^-3K-4. If I change σ to a variable and hit enter, the answer should be a question mark and a red circle should appear around σ telling me my variable has not been defined. Instead it goes back to green and assumes Boltzmann's constant. This is silly because there are multiple other common uses for the Greek letter σ. So why choose one in the software? And if it's to be a constant, then why is not not in the constants dropdown instead of symbols? There needs to be a global assignment options box for each worksheet where you specify these types of things for the entire sheet.
@PatJHeffernan10 күн бұрын
@@DavidKonyndyk I’m not sure what to say… I am able to manage sigmas label and shift it between constant and variable without issue (I just pulled out the computer to check).
@PatJHeffernan10 күн бұрын
@@DavidKonyndyk As for the constants drop down box, it only has the most common ones listed as there are too many constants to list there. Once a symbol is designated as a variable or constant, it should maintain its definition until changed within the worksheet. If you have suggestions for the UI, you should engage with PTC, I find them very approachable.

Why do we use double arrows for Torque? What does that signify? Thank you!
@PatJHeffernan3 ай бұрын
This used to be more common as it allows us to signify a torque easily, including direction (right hand rule) in 2D. Newer texts show the torque as a curved arrow, but this requires a 3D diagram to fully comprehend. The double-arrow as torque is simple and easier than curved arrows for personal calculation notes… especially for 2D representation, which most of us do. Curved arrows are easy to misunderstand the direction.

I don’t think it is actually possible to answer your question. The diverse nature of projects across the breadth of industries and circumstances change the variability of factors incredibly. For example, parts are ordered and are 4 weeks out but will take 2 hours or a week (no fixed time) for follow-up, or the person has to research suppliers and complete the design with a 1 wk offset of start and finish, but otherwise parallel path efforts at 75%/ 25% time (aside from fixed recurring conflicts)? What precisely do you mean by an “iterative plot”? I’m happy to give it some thought if I’m sure I know what you mean.
@Info-GodАй бұрын
Iterative plot could mean: a fascicle/nomogram of the function if it contains a parameter(s) that varies. Like: mx+2y+5=0, where m takes a range of values. There are those graphs on advanced books showing how a function behaves as a specific parameter (m) varies.

Hi, great stuff as always, thanks for your videos! I have a problem that I guess is a bit tricky to explain. If I want to solve a problem, and use symbolic values, I can't figure out how to define ('save') the output from a solve function containing a symbolic value. In an exercise, a force is given as 'F' and dimensions as multiples of 'a'. With the solve function and explicit parameter, as you show in this video, yes, I can get the output I want, but it remains undefined until I define 'F' and 'a' as numerical values. I would need the values in further equations, so I want to achieve a valuable defined using symbolic values. Maybe I'm missing something basic? I hope it makes sense. Thanks :)

@philipbgood: As I interpret it, Mathcad is dealing with your two column matrices as arrays. If you check the help on Matrix Multiplication it offers this explanation for "two vectors of the same length": "Returns the dot product (inner product) of x and y: a scalar formed by multiplying element-wise the entries of the first vector with the complex conjugate of the entries of the second vector and summing the results."
