Thanks for the idea! Simply put, you released two regular singles from humbucker, am I right?
@ZeroMod9 ай бұрын
Hi - I do not understand your question. "released two regular singles" ? the bars extend the magnetic field of the two coils outward. If you want to buy the pickup I modded in this video it is available .
@kirillz.46579 ай бұрын
I may have formed the question incorrectly. The real "toaster", as far as I know, is not a humbucker. And the Chinese did exactly that, so it seemed to me that you "split" these two coils so that they work like two ordinary single-coil pickups. I'm not good at these issues, that's why I made this assumption.@@ZeroMod

The other day I made an order for the Chinese to manufacture such a bass, only with the correction of some design flaws of the Chinese copies.@@ZeroMod
@ZeroMod9 ай бұрын
@@kirillz.4657 OK - no ! I kept it as a humbucker. Yes the original "Toaster" is indeed single coil. I expect you could do that ( run each coil) My goal was just to get the E and G outputs up to match A and D. and INDEED these Chinese copies can have many odd changes. Big one is scale - Real Ric is 33 1/4 the Chinese make them Fender 34 inch plus extra frets so they are really "necky". I custom ordered another one done to real Ric scale and Ric fret count. Even then they still muffed some things up. They like to make them with pickups out of phase (odd) and they most always push the bridge pickup too far bridgeward. Hope your order comes out nice!
@kirillz.46579 ай бұрын
Yes, I know these moments with the wrong arrangement of pickups, and that this critically affects the nature of the sound. Therefore, I carried out thorough measurements of the real Rick, made drawings based on them, found the electrical circuit of the desoldering, collected many photos and sent them this technical assignment. Well, of course, it will be with a through neck. Only the "wings" of the body are not made of maple, but of linden.@@ZeroMod

@ZeroMod2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I don't get the whole "front - rear" thing? You mean the small humbucker at the bottom of the neck? (to me it's neck /bridge"!) And YEA - that is the standard thing they do on most Chinabackers. Since it is a coax cable from the pickup you need to crack it open like i did in this video to switch the wiring. I do not recall the wiring on the bridge unit (been too many years since I did this) But you could reverse that instead.
@leftygeezer2 жыл бұрын
@@ZeroMod its the single coil at the bridge position. It's certainly out of phase, and has that quacky, mayonnaise jar tone. In the middle position its worse, but turning down the bridge pickup helps alot. I like the bass overall, and I think a proper rick-style bridge will solve much. The neck pickup will benefit from wax potting. Your video got my gears turning.

@@leftygeezer There is a lot you can do with these basses for sure. Not to start a ruckus but I never believed bridges effect "tone". They sure do effect playability and setup! I have basses with Babicz, Badass, Schaller, Ric and Fender bridges and have swapped many out and around over my 50 years of playing. That said "your mileage may vary". The bridges I have seen on these are actually pretty good once you correct for the tragic radius issues! On that I refer to the one that looks kind of like a Ric bridge? (some have a Music Man style bridge) If not seen, my other video covers shimming the D and A saddles to fix the radius. But a better bridge is not a bad thing. Now I OWN two real Rics. And have worked on many for people and worked on / modified some of the knockoffs for people. As said in the review and several times in follow up comments attached -This bass was UNPLAYABLE out of the box.. Recutting the nut was mandatory. The incorrectly radius-ed bridge also has to be addressed to get what any serious player calls playability. Yes, MUCH heavier than it should be as it is not made of Basswood (as advertised) but made of Chinese Elm. Which only leads back to the big problem - massive inconsistency. Depending on which of the hundreds of sellers you go with . I suspect ALL are coming from the same or a few factories but the QC standards a particular seller demands? There are also some operations making demonstrably better versions for quite a bit more $$ - $400-$500 as opposed to $250.

The "stock" pickups on a Chinabacker are not capable of sounding really like Ric pickups. VERY DIFFERENT pickups! The bridge unit is a single coil very hot wound with huge MusicMan pole pieces, You will NEVER get the high end articulation out of that pickup. The neck pickup is a humbucker, and with very low output compared to the bridge unit. Dumping the bridge unit and putting in a more full range pickup would get you closer. But due to the strange string spacing you CANNOT just stick in a Ric pickup.

I get the temptation to buy one of these. They run between 350 and 450 from the decent china shops but put mods in it, new bridge, better pickups, some fret work.. you're likely halfway to buying a gently used 4003. I was just looking at a new 4003w from musicians friend for 1567.00. Not cheap by any stretch, but I could probably get a decent used one for 1200. I did buy a china made 620 style 12 string from Thomann but that's because I couldn't justify paying 1500 for a 12 string electric when I know I'll rarely use it and Harley Benton doesn't claim its a Rickenbacker. If you buy the china, just accept it'll be a project.

A very interesting comparison, raising a whole can of ethical worms! By producing a distinctively styled and voiced bass, but pricing it way out of the reachability of most bass players' pockets, Rickenbacker are prime targets for the Chinese entrepreneurial spirit. On the evidence in this video, they have produced an instrument with a very similar spec/sound/aesthetic to the original at a tenth of the cost. Of course people are going to buy it!!!!!! Is that ethically right or wrong? I don't know. But................. ............following on from watching this video I went on the DHGate website on November 13th 2019 and investigated their 'Ric' basses. 11.11 discounts were still being offered and I saw a 'Rickenbacker 4001/4003 Walnut Through-neck Bass' being offered for (including 11.11 and first-time buyers' discounts)..............£79...........$93!! This included a case and free postage UK!! As a bass player who'd always dreamed of owning a Ric I gave in and ordered one!! Will it be any good?.....Will it actually arrive?.....Is it a con?.....Am I selling my soul to the devil?....I don't know. I'm tracking it online and it's now half way to the UK. When/if it arrives, I'll update this message and let you judge!!

Yes, for sure. As I have said ad nausium - Ric should join the rest of the high end makers and offer their own "knockoff". Like MusicMan. Gibson, Fender, Sadowsky , Tobias, G&L, and most others. Trouble is it is impossible to effectively convey in a video - the haphazard quality (or lack thereof) in these copies !!! Some better than others, many requiring a LOT of work to be playable, arriving unplayable out of the box. Even after much work, they have deficiencies that may or may not be acceptable to a player. The INCORRECT mix of string spacing and the "copy toaster" pickup was profoundly annoying to me. (see my other video)
