They could maybe, and it's just me speculating, still have one metal sonic. One of them goes rouge in a way and has both robotkniks quils of sonic and shadow, making him the real sonic. He evolves from a failsafe to getting some form of sentience evolving into ego and wanting to get rid of Sonic personally. Agent Rockwell also feels like a set up for a future villain, maybe she weaponized the failsafe and is not only sending metal sonics to our heroes but also into other parts of Sonic and friends homeworld. Maybe Amy is already more of a leader like how she is in the comics, and sees Team Sonic as the force they need to win the war against a human G.U.N invasion. Maybe the next trilogy instead of finding family being the theme, is about growing up and going to new places?

You can notice that the one in the middle has the classic blue and yellow color scheme he has in the games while the other ones were lacking in color. There IS a main metal Sonic, I also don’t think we saw that one being destroyed like the other ones.
