Boiler technician here. Water reaching those temperatures to me sounds like it would be a good idea to get a bladder tank, to give the heating and expanding water somewhere to expand into so it doesn't drive up the pressure and burst your copper. Also, if anyone is going to solder this together, they should remember to wipe their joints with a rag afterwards. So common is a situation where they don't do this and the joints all leak within a couple of years, because the flux is acidic. I really don't know about the longevity of ProPress joints. They are working like a charm for my boiler team so far, but it is probably a better idea to not have any joints or fittings inside your thermal battery; just continuous unbroken loops of copper, so that if one should burst on you, you can more easily repair it.

Hey, also, the available tech for heat transfer in liquid from air (water or glycol) is amazing so you could use a small air to liquid heat transfer to get the most out of the heat in the air into your heat battery. I apologize if I heard wrong, but the 30-40 degree C heat you save will not last till winter, entropy...

I hear you about the passive being best, but if the fan is needed (mostly) only when the need is for cooling, a solar panel is fine, only power when the temp is high (sun shining)...but in general a fan to be 100% and a passive backup for when the tech fails, the best from you both that way!! Awesome report! I am planning a geothermal GH next spring (I hope). NE region in DC area, looking to extend the growing season for at least 2-3 seasons if I can manage it. I plan to building a GH that is a full gabled building where 1/3 - 1/2 on the north side is storage, thermal mass (water and solids) and a regular style composite roof to the middle and an insulated wall between sections, with the "glass" on the south and insulated walls on the ends. The location is a sloped hillside so the building can be partially underground on the north side. I plan also to have a vestibule in the main GH entry area. Vents on the north lower wall and roof with earth tubes circulating air (or if I can afford it, the geothermal tubes buried 10ft down and circulate to cool & heat)...thats the basic plan as of now. I am working on the architectural designs and views now and permits in the spiring (Im hoping).

You could increase the thermal capacity of your system by using a top layer of 5 gallon buckets filled with salt water and putting the lids back on. Interweave PEX tubes around them, and pack in the dirt. I wonder how long it would take before the water eventually escaped. I'm thinking of a similar situation, but not for storing heat an entire season. Instead to take care of something like a 10 day cloudy cold snap. I would use a domestic heat pump hot water heater to store energy in the battery on days that are warm enough and sunny enough to generate excess power for a Mini Split and the hot water heater.

If I am in a rural area with well water, then I would do a modified open loop and save myself the excavation costs. I would encase the outdoor unit in an insulated box like you show, and within the box, I would have it large enough that I can put in a tank connected to a radiator and a fan and a pump. You can use radiator fluid like in a car, the reason is if you use water and lose power then water might freeze. Alternatively if you have a shallow well, where water table is high you can use heat pipes and no need for a pump as the heat pipes are connected to the water below which is 10C on average and will convey the heat to the tank, and the fan blows air through the radiator which warms it. You can also couple this with flat plate solar collectors and heat pipes that extend to your working liquid fluid and warm it and mix it with the grounded liquid reservoir to elevate the temperature of the air. Or have a large enough reservoir tank for the solar thermal panel that you can mix throughout the evening when it’s normally colder at night. And if you have backup wood heat for the coldest nights say in January of February you can use a wood loop with a copper loop around the black stove pipe.

Hi. I love your videos. I want to learn more about your analysis. My back of the envelope estimate shows PV solar is two times more expensive than solar thermal . I would like to see your analysis that shows PV is less expensive to heat water than solar thermal. I looked at just the cost and output for Aqua Solanor vacuum tube collectors vs Panasonic PV and the analysis is below. Vacumm tube cold climate: 5.5 kwh/sq.meter/day - OG-100 certification testing. Cost $769, 2.34 sq meter Cost = 769/(2.34 x 5.5) $59.6 / kwh-day PV 370 watt panel at $233 per panel. Assume 5 hours per day of full sun in winter Cost= $233/(370 x 5) = $125/kwh-day Ignoring the balance of system costa for both technologies, PV is double the cost of kwh produced. Please list your analysis so we can compare and learn from each other. Thanks!

I'm looking at buying some raw land in Northern Idaho. It sounds feasible to run trenches on each side of the driveway that I'll be putting in. I'm expecting to buy the Mini Split anyways for heating. But by using the geothermal heat to preheat the air going into the Mini Split, it will continue to operate well even when outside temperatures go below 0 F, when normally the coefficient of performance goes to pot. I can use this system for cooling in the summer time too. This should help the Mini Split last longer, since it will basically be used for less time each year.

I think my DNA shows that this is indeed true. My ancestors are all traced back to Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, France and Orkney, Scotland. Great grandfathers all were original pioneers of New France (Quebec, along the St. Lawrence River) and Upper East Coast Colonies, dating back to the late 1600s. Hudson Bay Co. did seek out men from Orkney due to their Viking ancestors…men who could take on the Canadian Wilderness.
