He's got a point, it might seem quaint to have someone be friendly with you but then it makes things harder to reprimand them or punish them for transgressions. Formal relationships are much easier.

Wow this comment section is full of people who have only seen clips of the show. Like, people show up to say based when Lenny "dominates" the Curia to have their "Fuck Pope Francis" catharsis not reading the actual show. The show isn't about how the Papacy needs to RETVRN. It's about the fact that the games conservatives and traditionalists are actually playing are naked power-grabs and attempts to cling onto institutional authority. Lenny is transparently honest about this several times. Lenny even implies that he doesn't even necessarily believe in God all of the time. He believes first and foremost in THE CHURCH. He uses the language of faith to accumulate power. Not for himself but for an institution that is his real God. THAT is the point of this clip. That the Papacy is an inherently cynical, selfish organization of power-mongers who maintain the illusion to maintain their authority. The Pope speaking (if I'm not mistaken) is Julius II who used the Papal State's army's to gain complete hegemony over central Italy. This show is more about the commenters then I think they are willing to examine.
