something i think is worth pointing out is how in the majority of the footage shown, sonic isn't boosting and drifting at the same time, which is exactly how the mechanic was intended to be used. drifting being on the triggers was a last-minute change; originally, you were supposed to take your thumb off the boost button and hold the crouch button to drift (and you still can in the final game) so the levels and drift were designed with the assumption that you wouldn't be able to drift and boost at the same time.

Yes that is the way it’s meant to be played, like how you release accelerate when cornering tightly in racing games I don’t get how so many people didn’t get it lol it always occurred to me very quickly Also lots of these clips I can do much better now and you actually don’t even have to release boost if you time it right most of the time (I usually find releasing boost handy in the dlc drifting levels)

0:04 this made me laugh when it really shouldn't. could've ended the video right there and I wouldn't be mad! it's the reason why I will always counterargue against the "generations drift is better" statements. what people want is not a DRIFT, they just want to do a SHARP TURN. there's a difference that these players never bring up and will instead label the mechanic as trash when failing to get the hang of it. an actual DRIFT is meant to be learned, because there's understeer and oversteer to take into account. the "drift" in generations is a literal sharp turn that'll get you through every corner without any momentum to think of. I won't say it's bad in gens though, just different. the mechanic in unleashed isn't perfect, it could use some tuning but it's far from trash. like the video shows, people should try not boosting for once and actually try to master a skill lol. if you do exactly that, you'll see that drifting + boosting in unleashed isn't impossible when you learn how it works (like the video shows, again). I miss the arcade-like feel of Sonic games. Unleashed was no perfect videogame but it's one of the last in the series that didn't hold my hand at every turn and actually made me figure things out for myself. I'm sure someone will make another video on the drift next year and I'll be there to defend it as usual

If somebody can mod it to where it triggers the animation without having to run into the fence everytime that’d be awesome. I mean the animations already exist in the game files so it shouldn’t be too big of an issue

The drift was a new concept and the same with the stomp. Which is why they feel better in Colors and Generations. They, or should I say"Sonic," have gotten better at using them.

I don’t think the drift feels better in Colours or Generations tbh, although Colours easily has the best and most spammable stomp out of all the boost games

I personally entirely hate it, the implications it holds on a lore/presentation level, the raw gameplay flow and interaction, the fact it's often usable as a movement crutch (this is 90% on the movement system), and how it's visually executed in game. It feels off, too easily acquirable, and visually disconnected from the utter weight that breaking an animus simulation with something of the sort should have. This is partially counteracted by their explanation of Basim entering a flow state or whatever, but the problem is that this explanation is utter dogshit, and that they had a miles better one literally served on a silver platter: (Valhalla spoilers for other readers) Considering Basim's own blood, after revival, is used for memory reproduction and synchronization, it would make sense for it to host insanely high sync potential, considering he's literally a walking, talking primary source. This high sync potential should allow for you to slightly break/fast forward the simulation for what should be a FAR higher cost, potentially affecting health (if it was interpreted as sync). This would tie it in with lore better, and potentially allow for the Animus to get FAR more involved in the visual end. Imagine assassin focus getting triggered causing a fake animus loading screen and UI to pop up, targets marked with thin, debug-screen looking lines and fake "code"/logs, heavier visual glitches on the screen, an abstergo/assassin logo appearing in a corner, big text boxes describing what's happening and the progress of the "fast forward", a robotic voice akin to AC1 notifying you of the fast forward happening, an older-school Animus loading noise revving up as if it's getting pushed as hard as it gets, your sync/healthbar steadily decreasing. But no, a couple of screen tears, particle effects, and sploingy glitch noises sealed the deal lol (God I fucking hate AF)
