If that answer can’t be rationalized to an entity outside of creation, than you cannot be a moral person bc your mediator isn’t objectively neutral, but is instead in an entity that you can associate with in order to rationalize your right to exist over someone else. Hitchens points up here the most disturbing part of Christianity that was taught to me as a small child; only I didn't have the voice to express it. I was also surrounded by adults who were all too willing to accept this human sacrifice to redeem their mortal sins; which was the most disturbing thing of all to me. It seemed positively ghoulish.

I have read more (JE's words) about his supposed departure from Christianity than he shares here, and I was left questioning how genuine his former 'faith' truly was. I don't mean he wasn't sincere in his behavior, as far as it went. But all too many go along with a 'Christian' lifestyle or honorable morality or humble motivation without understanding what a Christian essentially is. Of course people raised in a church (i.e. many churches, at least) are going learn the 'right answers' and even self-ID as a Christian. But biblical belief is more than just giving the right answers, and to me his grasp of its Truth -- what he really believed and was convinced of -- seemed suspect in the first place. But God knows, I don't. Whatever the case, it really saddened me.

I was an evangelical Christian and lost my "faith" too. Then I read Dr. Eben Alexander's book Proof of Heaven and other stories of NDEs. God and the Afterlife by Dr. Jeffrey Long is good too. I now see that God and the afterlife and the soul do exist. The Divine is at the top of the mountain so to speak and every religion has a path up to the Creator. Love is the answer. Evangelical Christianity has turned many away, but it is a flawed doctrine of exclusivity and makes no sense. You don't need to convert everyone.
