Life changing album. Musically, it’s just so intelligent and original. After hearing Jimmy play on Derek’s album way back in the day I became really interested in him. Then I heard this. Then I heard the rescue unit. Then I heard him with the allman bros. Then with WSP…….. oh, and yes the Grateful Dead too! I realized Jimmy is just that fucking good!!!! Jimmy, not Trey Anastasio, nor Michael houser. Jimmy Herring is the man, and really if you are a guitar player……. You wished you had HIS resume! I have been playing music most my life and some of you assholes leave such ridiculous comments about this or that scale; and it’s so clear you have zero fucking clue…… I had to do that for all included

Jazz is Dead was my introduction to the music of Grateful Dead. So now, when I hear vocal renditions if these songs I always think to myself, "that's not the way it goes". Weird, right?

"Great Sky River" is the 3rd album by the instrumental jazz-fusion band Jazz Is Dead, which is led by bassist Alphonso Johnson. The band's first live release, it was recorded at the IMAC Theater in Huntington, New York, and was issued by Zebra Records. JAZZ IS DEAD: -Alphonso Johnson -Bass (W.Report, Santana, etc.) -Jimmy Herring -guitar (WSP) -T Lavitz -keys (Dixie Dregs) -Rod Morgenstein -drums, percussion (Dixie Dregs) *In 2017, Jimmy Herring formed The Invisible Whip with Jeff Sipe on drums, Jason Crosby on violin and Rhodes, Kevin Scott on bass, Matt Slocum on Organ. They performed 50 shows, which includes co-billing with John McLaughlin on his farewell American Tour.

Yesterday (5-16-22) I discovered this album and heard it for the first time. In their heyday I had known about Jazz Is Dead, but never sought them out. Well, I'm 61 years old & I LOVE this music. My dad introduced me to jazz at an early age, probably before I was ten years old. My oldest brother brought home the Dead albums (again, around the same time), and played them on dad's stereo. My first exposure to Jimmy Herring was through Phil Lesh and Friends and the man is a dynamo. Anyways, love this line up and the music. And thank you for posting this album!
