Thanks Shawn, pinching does work well if you know what you’re doing. I have done that with a new reed, but if you’re doing a summer gig that causes you to wait for your time, heat and humidity might cause the blades to open, while waiting your turn, causing a flat F again. Have you ever run into that?

Reeds are either the scourge or joy of the piper. This is one of the few videos that clearly explains and illustrates this delicate process without assuming prior knowledge.

I just got a practice chanter and I have to blow like hell just to get a squeal sound, what is wrong, is it the reed.

You just got a practice chanter? Go find a teacher. The pipes are an instrument that you cannot self-teach.

THANK YOU!!! You have saved the day (and the reed) for me! I ended up trimming just a mm from the tip and it completely fixed the flat F! It amazes me that such minute adjustments make such big differences! I was despairing until I saw your video, so thanks again!

Just bought bagpipes this week... I had such a stubborn bass cane reed! Luckily, using a plastic file folder tab and lodging it in there for a while did the trick. Thanks for walking us through this. 🤙

Thanks for this sensible and clear advice! It worked well for me, unlike some methods that also "enable" me to damage a reed while processing it, by slipping and damaging the tips. This method give much more control. Thanks again!

I'm going to try some cane reeds for the first time just as an experiment and to see how they sound and also for the learning experience.

Apart from the tricky fingerwork the chanter Reed is what gives me the most trouble, I'm still learning a lot of the basics, but I love the sound of the pipes and hope to be able to play eventually, practice, practice, practice.

Hi! Goo video! I recently got a beginner bagpipe and am struggling to get it to work. It's like the air gets released right away somehow and I have no idea what the reason could be. The bag doesn't seem to have any holes and my pipes may or may not be assembled correctly...
@fortheloveofpipes8432
@fortheloveofpipes8432 6 жыл бұрын
TheLixan do you have a teacher? If you are starting on the highland pipes have you worked on the practice chanter first? To check for leaks, remove the chanter and all drones from the bag and cork their stocks. Fill the bag with air and listen for leaks. If you can’t find leaks you need someone to work with you, preferably in person, to find where the air is leaking.
@micregil

Your drone reeds are probably getting too much air through, they can be adjusted but you only have to move the bridle a hairs thickness at a time, they are very sensitive, also adjust them so they shut off at the same time if you blow too hard, I'm still learning myself, what make of pipes do you have?

how do you tape up the D note?
@HuskReeds
@HuskReeds 7 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean? Any note that is sharp would get taped in the same manner simply buy putting tape on the next open hole when playing the note that is sharp. So if you were fingering a D the top most hole that is open would be the 4th hole up on the front of the chanter, thus, the D hole. Put some tape on the top of the hole and this will flatten the D.

When I was 18 years old, I was walking along the street and heard the pipes playing. It was an old guy who was 90 years old. His old R.G. Laurie's were so easy you could blow them with your nose. Once I got to know him, he showed me a box of reeds and said "some of these reeds are older than you, son" we sat at his front window one day when I told him my mouth hurt and he looked in my mouth, then said " I've got something for that. He had a little bottle and I got some on my finger to rub my ulcer with and felt better. We sat and played the highland wedding march. Nice memories. That was in the 1970s. I remember he sent me to an old guy called Calum Ferguson who once worked for Granger and Campbell in Argyle Street, Glasgow who taught me more in an hour than I'd been taught up to then. Never underestimate a man just because he's 90 years old. Look at Tony Bennett as an example still singing with power.

Marvin The Maniacal Dancing Ape Yes, an unforgettable person indeed. I saw him one day, sitting in the shopping mall in Hamilton (Lanarkshire, Scotland) and he didn't recognise me at first until I reminded him of our last meeting and then he was enthusiastic about us going back up to his wee house to play the pipes. I remember him showing me some old photos of when he was young. He said " don't drink son" "or, if you do, don't get drunk often. When I was young, my uncle took me to the pub and I got very drunk. My mother went nuts and told me never to do it again, and that was my last drink". I haven't followed his advice, though. I didn't live near him but I regret not going to see him more often.

Marvin The Maniacal Dancing Ape Sorry, I should have broken the quote up a bit. It was the old man's uncle who got him drunk. He also told me that one time, he was on television and met some famous people. He was at a party and the actor, James Robertson Justice who was drunk, was playing the pipes but he was a terrible player.

Thanks, Shawn! Great information! I'd completely forgotten about using beeswax on the tongue, but will give it a try next year. I love the sound of cane in my pipes, but I'm more in love with the plug-n-play convenience of the synthetic reeds.
