Randomly found you on KZbin (it's all connected) - as someone out of work for 6 months last year, i feel for you and i wish you good luck. Don't be afraid to reach out to your contacts (as much as a that's a tough pill to swallow sometimes) - i have done that, it feels kind of begging, but it can turn into opportunities. When the same thing happened to me in 2023, it turned out to be a sizeable blessing because, as you pointed out, it made more time for projects, yes, but I was also able to spend a lot of time with family during those months, including my grandfather, for whom that would be his last year with us. And when it was all said and done, the job I ended up with was notably better, so, a win in almost every regard.

I've been watching your unemployment adventures, and I'll keep watching. I went through a similar process twice in my career. The last was when I was 42 back in early 2000s. It took me about 4½ months to find my next position. And my wife was a stay at home mom. With a toddler. And pregnant. Hopefully COBRA won't be too much for you. But if it is you can now get state aid. And you mentioned your kids were grown and gone. Maybe you are in your 60s and can collect early social security if you need to?

Did you get any kind of severance package? My hubby had been laid off at age 55, after 17 years with one company - and was expected to train the new guy (in another state) and got zero in severance. Such a slap in the face. It took him many years to find a decent job - not a great job, but a decent job. Sigh.

When people say "There's life after layoff" I think that our personal lives were always there. They just didn't get as much attention and some people forget about them. Work is always temporary and cyclical. It's merely the financial side of work that creates such an imbalance in life. Working on projects is more fulfilling because you benefit and not your employer. If we are on this spinning rock for 70-80 years then unemployment seems much more temporary and insignificant. (Easy for me to say)
@Doug-kb7gx20 күн бұрын
It is true that we get sucked into focusing on work and neglect the things that should be more important. This layoff is not "good" or "bad" it's just life, although it does offer a little time to refocus on what is really important.

I’ve been there several times, it’s a devastating feeling. Your daily purpose is gone, the work relationships are gone and the loss of income is a gut punch. Unemployment is only for a 6 mth period , only pays 66% of what you made & that time goes quickly. Unemployment usually offered free re-training opportunities, look into them. Consider a new skill set something totally different from your career to date. I went from being a VP in Banking to becoming a Nurse. Why? Because as a nurse I could always find work & the field interested me.
@Doug-kb7gx21 күн бұрын
The whole thing is very new and I'm trying to stay focused on securing a position. I agree, you need to be open to new things. Nursing is a fairly secure job and I see openings all the time.
@azgardenlover37015 күн бұрын
Nursing is not so secure if you dont have the jab. My daughter has been having to do temp work because of that, and those are usually very short term contracts. She can have pretty large gaps in between at times.
@Doug-kb7gx15 күн бұрын
@@azgardenlover370 As with a lot of jobs they can depend on where you are located. In our are there seams to be a shortage of nurses.
