They located in that region because the climate was nothing like it is today as well as the hydrology was completely different. And I understand the dating of the site of the metropolis but there would have been generations of building and construction at that site before the ruins were built that we see today. I would not be surprised if in the future the date of civilization in this area is pushed back closer to the end of the Younger Dryas.

There is no saraswati civilization like mentioned in some comments. Saraswati River is physically in Afghanisthan as Haraxvati. Rig vedic Aryans after migrating into the indian subcontinent , named flowing water bodies from the Himalayas as saraswati. It is common for a migrating culture to give names to new places from their cultural past in their memory. The hyms in the rig vedic text clearly indicate that they gave such a name to river bodies flowing from Himalayas. But indus is in west, not in the northeast where Himalayas are present. Naming as saraswati is the biggest hoax and fraud by bjp rss, and the North indian are made to believe that. They wrongly teach that in the history books in the name of nationalism.

Why are you calling it " Great Bath " -- a term used by ignorant westerners ? We know the ancient tradition of having " Pushkaras " and " Pushkarinis " near all Temples and " teerthas " . There should not be any question about some " rituals " . Second , we also have ancient tradition of construction and maintenance of water reservoirs . In Gujarat itself Giranar reservoir was built by Samrat Ashok in 3rd century BC . About maintenance and care , go to Mahabharata . There were strict rules for their maintenance and upkeep . Mahabharata also give details of a journey undertaken by Balaram . He started from DWARKA and visited many " teerthas " on way to Hastinapur .
