I was in an airport last year being pushed by one of the employees to my gate. We get not even halfway there and he says he will be right back. After 15-20 minutes, I start looking around worried. Other passengers nearby asked me if I needed help and I told them yes, I had been left there. They finally get someone to help me and I swear she ran me thru back hallways and shortcuts to get me to my gate at the last minute. She even called the gate to hold for me since I had been dumped by the first employee. I find it unbelievable what some employees will do without a care for your well-being.

This is a tough one to comment on. In general, I aim for 60-90 minutes before the flight and have priority check-in and screening. As a general rule, I leave home in a taxi around 2 hrs before pushback and have approx 30 mins to airport. I have taken more than 2,000 flights and this has been fairly good and only once (2 hours taxi in traffic in Cairo) did I almost miss a flight. However - where you do not have priority you need to expect minimum 30 minutes additional time and up to 90 minutes additional time. Also - domestic or international - generally are not any different in terms of timing. Thus - if you are a family with kids, in economy and with no status to get through security faster, then 3 hours will cover most situations. Single traveler I would do 2.5 hours and with status - max 90 mins but 60 is pretty good. However - if you are aware of how this flight will check in and how busy the airport is, you could do it shorter. Some outstations for an airline will only start the check-in 3 hours before so you cannot go earlier anyway (some airlines with smaller planes will only start 2 hours before). But 4 hours? I would not do this - and telling everyone to be at the airport so early is one of the contributors to lines and overcrowding.

My tips for Arriving early are the following If you have Priority through Airport Screening, Arriving 90 minutes or less before scheduled departure is fine if you have no checked bag, 2 hours if you do. If you don't then follow the usual.
