My dad was stationed at Hahn from 91-93. I was in 5th and 6th grade at the time. One thing this video doesn't showcase were the absolutely EPIC playgrounds scattered throughout base housing. At 2:00, in between the two buildings on the left was a structure built to look like a giant pirate ship. Towards the middle of the housing area was a series of interconnecting zip lines and platforms. When we eventually moved on base, just before we left for the US, my friends and I would roam around base housing, hopping from playground to playground. There was a unique sense of unity amongst the kids at that time. The base was about to close and the internet didn't exist, so it was extraordinarily difficult to keep in touch after we were reassigned. It was kind of an unspoken fate that we all shared and it formed a strong camaraderie amongst each other. It was a really magical time for me. I think of it fondly and often. Thanks for posting the video.

My dad was there 85-88 (k-4th grade for me). We lived in Kastellaun II and I loved it! Technically he was stationed outside of the AFB but dont know how to type the base name. Wushine? 🤷♂️ I love seeing these old videos of Hahn though. Get to see my old grade school 😊

Hahn base housing was packed with other kids, forests and amazing playgrounds. I could safely ride my bike anywhere and play with dozens of friends. Your kids missed out with your unfair snap judgement.

man o man.... I never in a million years would have imagined there would be a video of where I spent 2 years of my life in the USAFE back in 90-92. . . I was the USAFE A1C that cost the commanding base colonel his 1st star, for reasons I will not share.... LMAO! Needless to say, I was a NOT so good boy the 2yrs I was there. Airmen and Grunts don't work well together... lol #semperparatus everyone still hanging in there.

I had a brief tour there in the summer of 1988. I was 20 and fell in love with another Airman. He’s gone now and all that is left are memories.

Hahn was my first station out of tech school too. 1986-1988. I lived in Buchenburen. Amazingly they were letting single airmen live off base because of overcrowding. Thank you for the memories. I recognized a few places. But the memory is getting foggy after so many years.

Hahn was my first duty station. I was there from 1990 - 1992. It was toward the end of the bases time, and it had begun closing operations when I left. I met my husband there and we got married and are still married today. We had our first date at that base movie theater! Thanks for sharing this. Wonderful memories.

@@genemounceSr I was there at that time, too. Late 1991 until close in Sept 1993. I was then stationed at Morbach. My wife worked at the base child care center in base housing. I was a Law Enforcement Specialist, 583d SPS. I desperately miss Walter's.

Came to HAHN as a single guy in 76' left it in late 79' married. So funny that the payday traffic was bad back then too, so we spent most of our tour in Sohren , the local places and up/down the Mosel. We both worked alternating shifts, sometimes waving at each other going out/in to work at the GCA. It was nice to see everything still rather busy in 1990, even if the fate of the base was doomed eventually. Still remember USAFE painting the runway in camouflage (which never made a difference lol). Thanks for the memory tour !

I am visiting over 30 years later and many of the buildings are still there, but what I find interesting in your video is how little traffic there is. Thank you for sharing.

Great video! Was a Crew Chief in the 10th between 87-91. Talk about long work days and sucking rubber.... I do miss it though. It is called a love/hate relationship. Rotate back to the states with either a Shrunk, a Divorce or another child. I returned with a son. Great memories man! Thanks- John C. Sebolt

Great to see video of good old Hahn AB! I was there 79 to 80. I don't remember so many cars. I lived in that barracks just as you turned right toward the rec center. I spent quite some time at that rec center when I first arrived and I guess I fell into a pattern after that and didn't go there much. I was 18 when I got there and frankly I didn't have my priorities as straight as they could be. I don't think I was very good at my job. Those two years were good for me but not for the USAF. I was more into playing music and was in three different bands. In fact I looked up Hahn because I always wondered if my friend Don Davis ever made the big time with his songwriting. The famous band America(A Horse With No Name) has a special place in my heart because they, too, were Air Force enlisted stationed in Europe in the 70's and wrote enough songs laying around to become rich and famous. So they always reminded me of Hahn, although at the time I wasn't aware of this.

I just came and watched your drive thru Hahn again, It brings back a lot of good memories. It's been 35 years since I was there. It shocks me how much the base changed in the 3 years from when I left until you recorded this. The dorm beside the recreation center was the 2184th com squadron dorm when I was there, I was ground radar maintenance. You might know some of the people that I knew, my best friend while at Hahn was Dave Budworth, I think he was there pretty much till they closed it down. How I would like to go back to 1985 and do my time there again. It saddens me to think that it is all gone now.

Hahn was my first assignment after tech school 80 - 82. Wow -- the stuff that was done during those 2 years was amazing. I fell in love with the AF overseas and ended up retiring only to keep staying overseas. Lots of fun! I was part of the AFCC and we ran the communications for the base. Hahn was located in the middle of German farm country but wow did we find lots of fun!
