This is a video I made in 1990 to send back to my parents in the states to show them what it was like on Hahn Air Base. I set the video camera on my dash and drove from my off-base residence in Lotzbeuren to the base and drove throughout the main part of the base pointing out the different points of interest. Part 2 of the video starts as I'm approaching the post office on the right. Back in the day when our post office address was APO New York 09109. I hope anybody who was ever stationed at Hahn Air Base before it closed in 1993 will enjoy viewing this and for anyone since then who has only known this as Frankfurt-Hahn Airport.

I had a brief tour there in the summer of 1988. I was 20 and fell in love with another Airman. He’s gone now and all that is left are memories.

I just came and watched your drive thru Hahn again, It brings back a lot of good memories. It's been 35 years since I was there. It shocks me how much the base changed in the 3 years from when I left until you recorded this. The dorm beside the recreation center was the 2184th com squadron dorm when I was there, I was ground radar maintenance. You might know some of the people that I knew, my best friend while at Hahn was Dave Budworth, I think he was there pretty much till they closed it down. How I would like to go back to 1985 and do my time there again. It saddens me to think that it is all gone now.

Came to HAHN as a single guy in 76' left it in late 79' married. So funny that the payday traffic was bad back then too, so we spent most of our tour in Sohren , the local places and up/down the Mosel. We both worked alternating shifts, sometimes waving at each other going out/in to work at the GCA. It was nice to see everything still rather busy in 1990, even if the fate of the base was doomed eventually. Still remember USAFE painting the runway in camouflage (which never made a difference lol). Thanks for the memory tour !

Lived there a good chunk of the 1970s as an AF brat. Graduated from HS there in 1979 and have many, many memories of a great place. Very sad to see it in its current state as it was a very energetic, happening place for so many years. Thanks for the video.

I was a brat there from 1964-1967. One summer I had a temp summer job at the base chapel. I agree with the others from my time period that I sadly recognize very little except that this was an unusually nice day. I love seeing these uploads even if it doesn't like what I recollect.

I was stationed here at Hahn from 1988 to 1990 with my wife and our first son. I was with the 50th C.E.S. We still hold such wonderful memories about living there and the friends that we made and some that we still are in contact with through Facebook. We also lived off base. I don't recall the exact town, but it was out the base housing gate and a left to a small town. We lived on a dead end road in a house that had three apartments across the driveway from us. Thanks for posting this!!!

It is a long shot, but I do not know where else to start my research, so I am posting to whoever I can find. I am looking for the previous owner of my E9 BMW 3.0cs. He was an American stationed in Germany at the Hahn Airbase in Hunsrück until it was closed in ca 1990s and he lived on in Germany until 2002-2003 before moving back to US. Name is Dany Fenall or something similar. He sold the car to Mario Golembusch from whom I got it. The car is a inka orange E9, converted to l-jetronic and painted dark blue at some point. Maybe someone here knows someone who knows someone or could share this in some FB groups? Or are there by any chance some records of people stationed there or anything I could research? Any hint greatly appreciated! Let me find him please.

beverage store was offbase in 76-80 and there was no 'Toyland' and payday traffic is universal :) ... and it is good the chow hall was being renovated after all those years.... it was just opened when i was stationed, and at that time was really excellent .. but like everyone else, it is excellent to see the old place after all these years :)

Thanks for posting this, it's a great time capsule! We were stationed there 71-81. Dad was with the 50th FMS, we lived in Sohren and Buschenburen. My God I miss having a Kirner Pils with my bratwurst & pom frits. Remember the drinking age was 16? Had fun playing pool at The Atlantic Club in Lautzenhausen, and fusball at Heinz's place in Buschenburen. We rode our bikes everywhere, because most places were just 3 or 4 clicks down the road. Great times with very friendly locals, it was my second home.

Thanks for the video. I was stationed at Hahn from 78-80. Like some of the others have mentioned, I don't remember there being so much traffic when there. I had a car and don't recall having difficulty trying to park. Saw my barracks (I think). Lived in them for about 6 months then moved to a farm house in the German countryside. Great memories flooding back. I worked transient alert for the two years I was there. They still had F-4's back then.

Stationed at Hahn 74 - 76 , turned 21 yrs old my first year there. Still think about the place from time to time, some good some bad, The place was freezing cold and creepy during the winter months. Always will remember the thick fog in the evening the most. You could hardly see the building next to you. It was an experience I would not change.

Great to see video of good old Hahn AB! I was there 79 to 80. I don't remember so many cars. I lived in that barracks just as you turned right toward the rec center. I spent quite some time at that rec center when I first arrived and I guess I fell into a pattern after that and didn't go there much. I was 18 when I got there and frankly I didn't have my priorities as straight as they could be. I don't think I was very good at my job. Those two years were good for me but not for the USAF. I was more into playing music and was in three different bands. In fact I looked up Hahn because I always wondered if my friend Don Davis ever made the big time with his songwriting. The famous band America(A Horse With No Name) has a special place in my heart because they, too, were Air Force enlisted stationed in Europe in the 70's and wrote enough songs laying around to become rich and famous. So they always reminded me of Hahn, although at the time I wasn't aware of this.

Thank you so very much for posting this video. We were stationed there from 1981-1985. My husband worked at Victor Alert and the Blue Squardron. I worked at the hospital laboratory. We lived in Liesenich. I have been back a few times, my husband has not. Our children have seen the base but only an airport business park. Did anyone belong to the ski club? The ski club was a lot of fun! We hope to return this Sept. or Dec.

Just found this video. I was on Hahn for the first few months after i arrived then transferred over to Wueschiem. I was a GLCM comm guy. Never did see the Burger King built. My wife worked in the mobile Burger King RV for a time. We have nothing but great memories of our time there. I lived in Heinzenbach the last year I was there and I traveled extensively around the western region of Germany scouting comm sites in the advent we needed to deploy. Anyone remember Dollies bar?

Hi there, you should see the former base now. A lot of it is gone or used for other things. The most of the housing buildings aren´t safe anymore. They just left everything go. Know we have a big Cargo Area and are the third biggest cargo airport in Germany. I am a german with an american dad. I always loved going on the base. I can also say that for a lot of germans over here near us. We all miss the americans. It was always fun for a lot of germans. We all have great memories of the people.

What a change from the 50's. The only cars you would see is perhaps an officer or military vehicle. The only way into the basewas thru the little town Hahn. It was always off-limits to the military. I left the base in 1958 as an airman 2c and was making a huge monthly salary of $124.
