That "Commence" dress also reminds me of McCalls 7118. I guess the v-point goes the other way

Oh yes! I looked it up, and the McCall's 7118 is a great comparison! The NewLook 6369 was the closest sewing pattern I have to hack for this dress without buying another sewing pattern. I'm hoping for the best! LOL 😂 Wish me luck! Thanks for commenting. Hugs! 🥰

It looks great on you, I love to look at vintage patterns, and it's a joy to see them come to life after being stitched. I'm a newbie, just wondering if you have to do any modifications to the pattern before sewing? Do you have to do a mock-up before sewing the garment? What were the challenges for you in making this dress? I'd love to hear the details behind this dress that you made.
@sewpapilla
@sewpapilla 22 күн бұрын
Hi, Kendal. Aww Thank you for the sweet compliment! 🥰 I'm a newbie for garment sewing too. I too, feel the same way about vintage patterns. Usually I'll do a mock-up or toile, but I took a risk and went all-in cuz I was inpatient, Ha! If you have expensive fabric, I don't recommend going all-in unless your a confident sewer. No, I didn't make any modifications to the pattern before sewing. Ironically it was super close to my body size. However, afterwards I did end up taking in just a little bit in the back area at my waist area where it bubbled some. No real challenges really sewing the dress. But since it is a vintage pattern, the instructions or techniques were so outdated. I had to read them over and over and realized some of the techniques can be done so using modern techniques. Such as the interfacing; it asked you to sew in interfacing like so and do this..., Umm no thanks! Back then they didn't have adhesive on interfacing fabrics which make it so easy today. Over-all it was an enjoyable dress to make. Hope this helps!

@@sewpapilla Thanks for replying. You really did a great job and it looks so nice on you. The fabric was nice too. I love the background of your studio is so pretty. I heard too that the instructions on vintage patterns can be sometimes vague and a little outdated. Often times they may ask to put interfacing on the bodice itself as opposed to the smaller pieces around the neck and bodice. So yes, I totally understand you have to bypass some of these old ways and bring in the newer techniques. Ha ha Ha, you took a risk and that fully worked out well. You really lucked out there. Ha ha. I'm a new subscriber to your channel so I look forward to seeing what else you will produce. Have a great day!

It seems that the dress pictured in the pattern envelope flares more. Your dress is lovely but I woul prefer a more flared version for myself
@sewpapilla
@sewpapilla 22 күн бұрын
Hi, Esmeralda, thank you. 🥰 There may two good excuses for the skirt not flaring as the image on the envelope. One; it's a drawing, two; I possibly could have sized up to the next size as my hips are a little bigger than my upper. My body is kind of pear shaped. I too, Love LOVE flared type skirts. ❤️ For you; if you have this pattern, or any pattern, you can do the slash and spread method to get that look you desire. The pattern pieces themselves are not flared to give that full look as shown on the envelope. Unless your a stick-person of course, LOL. 😂 Hugs.

That’s such a cute dress!!! I’ve never worked in linen, it looks like it frays a lot, and serging some of the seams is a must. If one doesn’t have a serger, one might have to resort to more laborious finishing on the inside. 😅 I wonder if more shaping might be possible in the lower back along the back seam perhaps? It looks stick straight. I have a pelvic tilt similar to yours, so it’s great to be able to anticipate that area of adjustment before I start cutting, pressing and/or sewing.
@sewpapilla
@sewpapilla 29 күн бұрын
Hi, Amanda. Thank you! 🥰 I was feeling risky! LOL, I went all in on my first try, no toile. No adjustments to the pattern. You are spot on with the fitting on the back side. That area of the sewing pattern does need some adjustments to fit my body shape. Since then, I have taken the dress in one inch on both sides and it looks great! When I make this dress again it will include the pattern adjustment for a good fit. 😉Yessss! Linen does fray a bit and serging is recommended. For those who don't have a serger may want to consider bias tape for a fantastic finished seam or french seams. Thanks for commenting. Hugs. 🤗

I'm currently making this dress using this pattern, your tutorial is by far the most informative and easiest to follow! Thank you, thank you for posting this video! I'm self taught with no one helping me so I utube the patterns that I have as I like to sew the retro/vintage style patterns. If you made the sleeves longer and did the same quilting on it, and made the entire. Bodice about 4-5 inches longer, this would make a great coat, oh and split the front for buttons or snaps

Weird question - you said you made a size 12. If you had chosen a size based on your measurements and the back of envelope, what size did it think you are? I have this pattern. I've been putting off sewing it because I know it has too much ease for me.
@sewpapilla
@sewpapilla 2 ай бұрын
Hi there. It's not a weird question at all. Comparing my actual measurements to the back of the envelope, I'm a Size 16. The bust, waist, and hips on envelope are exactly my measurements right now. Simplicity always runs so big on me with the addition ease. As you can see, the size 12 was an exact fit for me. I'm short at 5'4". I also had to chop 4 inches off to fit me how I wanted. Hope this helps. I'd love for you to share your results. Good Luck! Hugs! 🥰

@sewpapilla
@sewpapilla 2 ай бұрын
@@pixieunger1855 Yesssss! I get it. I had the same problem, too. Most of the time I find my size by comparing my measurements to the finished garment measurements instead. Those can be found on the back of the envelope, or sometimes on the bodice pattern piece. If not, I'll measure the pattern pieces to find the right size or fit I want. I hope this helps. ❤

Don't be hard on yourself, you are "creating wonderful memories" for your little boy by spending that much needed time he needs with his momma. I'm still working on my resolutions too. Anytime you have a tiny moment to yourself, take advantage of it and treat yourself. I'm so excited to hear about your sewing room and that you are getting some sewing in. Even if you are getting a little bit of sewing in, that's ok. There are no rules, no deadlines, no pressure, just enjoy it while you can. I look forward to hearing more about your sewing room at the end of the year, Keep in touch. Hugs! 🥰

I love that your colors are cohesive, so that your new items fit right into your wardrobe. The only thing I would say is to turn your side seam so the waist ends at 90 degrees, then when hemming or trimming you don’t have that angle to deal with. I would have serged the bottom, then added the trim as you, then one simple turn under, add the top ribbon and it would have been slightly less bulk. Thanks for a simple nearly no waste design.
