It's certainly possible. However, the limited number of buttons and lack of a non-centering axis for throttle control would make it extremely difficult to do it well. A $10 thrift store logitech joystick and a keyboard can get you pretty far.

Jesus! Next time be low, hugging the ground or 30k feet at max range with HARM in PB
@starfury5629
@starfury5629 2 жыл бұрын
Element was set up to be supporting the maverick attack with HARMs. Did you hear the call for "slapshot"? That was the prebriefed contract for element to snap a HARM at the SA6. Unfortunately I didn't give them enough time to set up, and ultimately I still would've died because I was too close. 30k ft max range is unnecessary with an SA6. The HARM easily outranges it at more sane altitudes. And NOE ingress isn't always possible. There were red CAPs in the area, and being low without clear skies is a good way to die to an adder. The plan was great. We just pushed too far into the WEZ too early.

can you use DTOS with the TPG? I.e. first find a point in the HUD and then switch SOI to the TGP and correct the point of interest?
@starfury5629
@starfury5629 3 жыл бұрын
Short answer: no. DTOS is a HUD-cued mode only. Your other sensors (FCR, TGP) should slew to the HUD cursor to get you optimal ranging information. Longer answer: you can slew the SPI with the HUD in CCRP. Slew it to where you want it, refine with the TGP, then just fly a CCRP drop, which can also be a toss if you would like.

Hi. At 9:50 you are describing HAS with its center, right & left fields of view. Is there a benefit to using the right or left FOV? Thanks.
@starfury5629
@starfury5629 3 жыл бұрын
Sure. With the default WIDE FOV, you're seeing all the emitters the HARM seeker can see, all compressed into the area of the MFD. By selecting one of the narrower FOVs, you can isolate the FOV you want to look at, spreading the emitters in that narrower FOV across the area of the MFD. This can help declutter a potentially very cluttered display.

If you are a surface to air missile system radar operator, and you happen to see an F-16 point its nose directly at you, it might be a good time to interrupt transmission. This is why an actualy effective integrated air defese system (IADS) has more than one search and track radar strategically scattered, so as that they can employ them semi-actively, and thereby render anti-radiation missiles obsolete. Meaning an integrated system would turn on or off specific radar transmitters randomly, while maintaintaining tracking and search capability system wide, so no individual radar transmitter could ever be targeted for very long.

Per the description: **Please Note: The HAD functionality has changed significantly for BMS 4.35, rendering the HAD portion of this tutorial obsolete.** The HAS and POS modes are mostly the same, with the addition of some additional targeting modes in 4.35. nice vid as always! and i noticed that you didnt use the TGP to handoff the targets for maverick, any info about why not doing it? :d
@starfury5629
@starfury5629 3 жыл бұрын
The TGP handoff takes entirely too long, often doesn't work, and is only useful within ~8nm when it does work. When screaming in at a target at 350+kts, you don't have three seconds to waste hoping the handoff will work correctly. Much easier and faster to use the TGP to PID targets and give you an idea of where they are in relation to each other, then use the WPN page to manually find the same targets and command the contrast lock for the maverick seeker.

Hi- I was trained in Denmark by a private military company as a support and hardware specialist in the late 90s. Did you know that while the USAF trains pilots that this is a dive toss mode, DTOS, as you stated , this can be used for level bombing as well as fine tuning of a visual AOR without a targeting pod, so, in the export fleet, we call this the DIRECT TARGET OPTIC SIGHT, DTOS- You can use any SOI and SPI to create a toss profile, the avionics will give you the toss cue- the documentation we had from Lockheed Martin and the fighter weapons school at luke Air Force base referred to this Misnomer- the DTOS sight should be used to create any attack profile the pilot requires, and should not be relegated to toss profiles, it is a great tool to have once you have some visual aides like smoke plumes and secondaries. I use the direct sight to avoid sensor fixation and keep my head in the fight when I fly in the 2 4 and 6 position in a large flight, you want your head up scanning for launches and you’re generally targeting what your element is targeting as well.
@starfury5629
@starfury5629 3 жыл бұрын
That is amazing information! I did know some of that, but I'm sure the casual viewer likely does not. I have seen DTOS referred to as Direct Target Optic Sight, which makes more sense given the way the avionics work, but most often see it referred to (by pilots) as Dive-Toss mode. There's currently some bugs in the DTOS mode in BMS 4.35 (which have been around since 4.34) regarding crosswind calculation and symbology. Additionally, BMS simulates GPS jets and near perfect intel, so revising the TD box location with DTOS designation is rarely needed...unless you get creative with the mission design. Still, I used it a couple weeks ago to pop up on a SAM site and drop a CBU on it :)

Just to clarify, the reason you're using sim instead of master arm on, and the reason you turn everything off at the end, is because you're not actually intending to fire at the moment, you're simply aligning (boresighting) the maverick to the same spot as the TGP, so later you can use the TGP to find your target, and your maverick will already be pointing at the same location? Am I understanding correct?
@starfury5629
@starfury5629 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! There is a natural misalignment of the two sensors due to their different locations. Boresighting on a distant target corrects for this misalignment. I use SIM because I have no intention of actually firing the missile during the boresighting process, and in fact want to ensure I can't do so accidentally.
