Hi- I was trained in Denmark by a private military company as a support and hardware specialist in the late 90s. Did you know that while the USAF trains pilots that this is a dive toss mode, DTOS, as you stated , this can be used for level bombing as well as fine tuning of a visual AOR without a targeting pod, so, in the export fleet, we call this the DIRECT TARGET OPTIC SIGHT, DTOS- You can use any SOI and SPI to create a toss profile, the avionics will give you the toss cue- the documentation we had from Lockheed Martin and the fighter weapons school at luke Air Force base referred to this Misnomer- the DTOS sight should be used to create any attack profile the pilot requires, and should not be relegated to toss profiles, it is a great tool to have once you have some visual aides like smoke plumes and secondaries. I use the direct sight to avoid sensor fixation and keep my head in the fight when I fly in the 2 4 and 6 position in a large flight, you want your head up scanning for launches and you’re generally targeting what your element is targeting as well.

That is amazing information! I did know some of that, but I'm sure the casual viewer likely does not. I have seen DTOS referred to as Direct Target Optic Sight, which makes more sense given the way the avionics work, but most often see it referred to (by pilots) as Dive-Toss mode. There's currently some bugs in the DTOS mode in BMS 4.35 (which have been around since 4.34) regarding crosswind calculation and symbology. Additionally, BMS simulates GPS jets and near perfect intel, so revising the TD box location with DTOS designation is rarely needed...unless you get creative with the mission design. Still, I used it a couple weeks ago to pop up on a SAM site and drop a CBU on it :)

@@starfury5629 glad I could help. Our AM birds were mechanized slightly differently too. Some HOTAS functionality you English speakers do not enjoy.

can you use DTOS with the TPG? I.e. first find a point in the HUD and then switch SOI to the TGP and correct the point of interest?
@starfury56293 жыл бұрын
Short answer: no. DTOS is a HUD-cued mode only. Your other sensors (FCR, TGP) should slew to the HUD cursor to get you optimal ranging information. Longer answer: you can slew the SPI with the HUD in CCRP. Slew it to where you want it, refine with the TGP, then just fly a CCRP drop, which can also be a toss if you would like.

@@starfury5629 If I use now plow mode to set SPI, it seems like it is attached to the selected steerpoint and I can no longer reset it to the default location in front of the hud. I tried uncage, etc. with no success.

@@nexus888 Snow Plow mode will set the SPI 20nm directly ahead, relative to the aircraft. If you TMS up, you'll lock the SPI to that point on the ground. Then DMS Up to make the HUD SOI (optional), and slew the TD box onto the target area.

@@starfury5629 yea but only once. It isn’t possible to repeat this. At least I can’t find a way to reset it to default back to a spot in front of the place again.

@@nexus888 You need to DMS down to unlock the SOI, then disable and re-enable SP mode
