A) The good teams mostly don't defend so deep. So potential weaknesses of these both games are not all valid. B) It seems all people who say something like "I want to see them versus a stronger opponent" should have a look at some friendly games. We bet France two times and Netherlands once. Of course, not a tournament game, but stil an indicator.

As a German I was waiting for this tournament to come for a long time. In the last years I didn´t think they would have a single chance to win the cup. But after all that happened I´m so pleased with the team already. And I wouldn´t be even mad if they lose to spain in the early knock out stages (what will probably happen)

The biggest benefit of Nagelsmann’s ability to play a high level system is how perfectly his squad building was done. If you look at that starting 11, every single player plays some variation of this system at club level. Every single player. Even the bench players are familiar with it at squad level. So when it comes time to coach, he’s only tweaking minor aspects. Its the exact opposite of what Southgate did for England where the players come various systems at club level, & the system he’s trying to use is different still.

Through all of Southgates tenancy we have had the same core issue, he is overly defensive. The shape, the players, none it matters when your goal is to keep the ball on the half way line instead of the opponents actual goal. We have players that thrive in and around the box but we never play there.
@harveygration2 күн бұрын
Think the poorest element of the Serbia game was how passive we OOP with regards to our ‘defensive’ mindset. I don’t think keeping the ball deep is our problem, but vs Serbia our methods to progress it often blocked the tried and tested: Kane linking BTL, Trent occupying instead of arriving in MF etc.

i'm curious for that LHS would you take a more all-around player or would you like more of a specialist/luxury type, a player with a distinct style of play...i get the sense Mikel prefers a more all-around player that he could mold than a luxury or set 8, a hybrid he could chop/change depending on the opposition. I just really want to get that LHS consistent, feels like its been a thorn for 2/3 seasons now

Have england every tsken a shot outside the box? Thats my issue, ive noticed a lot of goals get wcored whrn a player smashed a goal at the keeper he cant keep hold of it and its just chaos in the box.. this is what england need to do instead of passing the vall around until it gets intercepted. This is the reason why england are boring as hell to watch

Kane not being allowed to drop between the lines didn't work at all, a large portion of England goals come from Kane assists or build up play. Even in the first half when we had good possession none of the forward players were good enough to work a chance to him, and the rest of the game he was only getting long balls in the air with two defenders on his back.
@harveygration2 күн бұрын
This is my point with Foden. It’s not that his role CANT work. It can. Absolutely. It’s just what you sacrifice elsewhere.

Why have we never tried Trent as the makeshift left back? Surely he can handle it as well as Trippier. He can invert into the deep Kroos position and be on his correct right foot. Then we can also keep Walker at RB.

I can easily answer this question. How will it go? Not great Jesus will stay ❌ Zinchenko won't be sold this season ❌ Kiwior will go❌ Reiss nelson , smith Rowe + Eddie will go ✅ We won't buy any of these players we need -Diomande, Victor Gyokeres, Guirameres, Kudus, Eze, olise❌ Fabio will be sold❌ Our bench will be thin AGAIN and the first team will be struck with constant injuries because Arteta doesn't trust the bench.
@rexstout81774 күн бұрын
I really think they should play a diamond in midfield. We only have one wide player who is at the highest levels - Saka. So if you play him and Kane up front with Saka doing what he normally does, we don't really lose anything. But we gain. We gain unlimited power in midfield.
@harveygration4 күн бұрын
Jude at the top of the diamond with Kane in the 9 is actually very nice. But IMO we would want Jude to drop deeper much more than the top of the diamond would allow. Unless you move him further back to the RCM, Rice in the 6 and Wharton/Mainoo LCM. Trent rb. Could work if Southgate puts out midfield shuttlers in the right place.
@nicklikethesoup4 күн бұрын
I would argue that the way Southgate is using Foden & TAA is indicative that he's not close to cracking this England side since he's been with them for so long, but that's my personal quibble with him as a manager. Rest of this was solid good stuff. Some of the music is a little somber and made the analysis feel a little like an eulogy for a bad performance. Don't think that was intentional, but maybe a little more uptempo to suit the positive vibes at the end when positing the hopeful message would be good.
@harveygration4 күн бұрын
Yeah that wasn’t the intention!!! Still practicing with that area of the editing, sorry! I think that’s a fair comment and probably it’s just me trying to offer something upbeat at the end! Either way, we have the players. Let’s hope Gareth cracks it now!

England need a runner on the right, not Foden
@matthewtabor68744 күн бұрын
Interesting analysis regarding player platforms. The problem with Foden's free role is that no one actually gives him the ball when he gets in the spaces that he's arguably the best in the world in and we have a completely non threatening left back. Once Serbia realised we had no threat on the left we became unable to generate anything because Bellingham isn't a natural chance creater. Agree trent is infinitely better at RB, but I think people are conflating being one of the best aerial passers in world football with being creative, if he was more creative he'd be able to find passes between the lines a lot more than he does. If we play him RB and Stones RCB we are going to get so exploited by anyone with a decent left winger, Rice isn't going to be able to sweep that up 10 times a game. If Guehi hadn't been so solid a Stones/Walker CB pairing with Gomez LB would completely unlock Trent for this role and then we would need a switch option LW which could be either be Saka and Foden goes RW to come inside and Trent can hold the width once in the final third (giving us room for either Gallagher/Wharton/Mainoo to play an 8-6-8 with Bellingham/Rice) or Bellingham plays next to Rice with Foden at 10 and Gordon on LW and we hope Bellingham can find the incisive passes we need to play through the middle.
@harveygration2 күн бұрын
Think the thing with Foden is that his free role here can absolutely work. However, it’s what you sacrifice elsewhere in manufacturing this. For Trent, being creative isn’t the issue playing a true MF role IMO. You’re just suddenly asking him to receive back to goal, get on the half turn, receive IN a block. Instead we should use his full ZOI, receiving on the outside, being able to access his creative range. We are defectively keeping him out of that now. Bellingham will go deeper eventually, kind of like he did vs Serbia anyway. For Foden in the 10 again you’re asking how it effects Harry Kane. He isn’t best utilised like Erling Haaland for example.
@matthewtabor68742 күн бұрын
@@harveygration kane is sacrificing here already and Foden is likely a better feeder for Kane than Bellingham would be because while kane and haaland aren't that similar they have some crossover unlike Kane and Vini/Rodrygo who are almost completely different. You might be right and it requires too much sacrifice but why have we never actually TRIED to set up for our player who has the most upside when you get it right?
@Best_game594 күн бұрын
Southgate should parner Rice with a secure ball playing midfielder like Wharton who can keep the ball ticking like Jorghino does for Arsenal. Mainoo cannot do this because he has the urge to dribble and attack, I have heard that in his youth days he was a winger, that's why he likes to wander upfield. We need someone who can sit and dictate play, I hope Southgate can trust Wharton for this role, it will free Rice to roam and press higher up.
@jacominaar58524 күн бұрын
harvey do u think foden is a system player and do u think germany are better than england currently?
@harveygration4 күн бұрын
I feel so sorry for Foden. He is an unbelievable footballer. Simply put. I don’t think he is a ‘system’ player, per say; however, his range of usage and adaptability over a range of zones is smaller than most current Eng players. To call him a system player is reductive though.
@bokehintheussr50335 күн бұрын
The whole Trent point is worrying. It just shows how tactically inept Southgate is that he thought he could play him as a static holding midfielder receiving the ball with his back to play. It takes a completely different profile of player to be able to do that.
@RishiSharma-sf6eu5 күн бұрын
i honestly think wharton should start. england need someone who can dictate the game and get on the ball on the half turn like him
@harveygration5 күн бұрын
Up vs a press he is brilliant. His body feels contact really well. In my profiling of him I’ve often touched in how elastic he is. This also helps with his carrying ability and is part of the reason he can play as an 8 higher up. Decision making wonderful, uses both feet, fantastic range of passing and bravery to punch balls BTL. Lovely playa.

Not having Rashford was a big mistake, might not have a great season but people can not doubt his quality. He’s always been way better than Foden in an England shirt.
@harveygration5 күн бұрын
I think you are right about Rashy. I would’ve had him in my squad (but he also has himself to look at as to why he isn’t). My favoured team would have Gordon off the left. Runner to a balance to attack nicely; can have Jude grabbing some more touches deep, Saka and Kane w/ more space BTL (Kane esp Saka can do any role given). Shaw as an overlap can make a Foden LW viable but we can’t have him receiving in the 2nd line anymore. Just want some natural width on that LHS. Something/body to make it natural. Wharton next to Rice, (Gordon and) shaw returning, Trent outside the block from RB and not receiving with 4 people around him! It’s not far away to be honest, and we are not looking for tactical perfection (there hasnt been that from many so far at this tournament)-just some better profiling and more intensity off the ball!

@Sam16264735 күн бұрын
I don't think so. Right back is his best position, just have him invert in midfield and have a conservative LB like Gomez and it should work. He is definitely not overrated as he's probably England's best creator especially deeper. Harvey laid it out quite well.
@charles94895 күн бұрын
@@Sam1626473 how many hoops does the team have to go through to get the "Best out of Trent". England's best "creator", don't make me laugh, Kane, Saka and Foden just to name a few is in this team. Only Liverpool Supporters and young fans seem to be enamoured by Trent, but what does he do at an elite level, can't dribble, can't defend, poor in tight spaces, poor on the half turn,can't set a tempo etc. Trent is a Mediocre player with a Generational right leg.
@harveygration5 күн бұрын
Talking to everyone here-Trent deeper and wider is just better. Period. You can have him invert as and when but mostly you’re just looking for where he can receive the ball outside the block and use his creative range fully. Trent IS one of the best creators on the planet. We are talking about the thorn in Guardiola’s back here, a KDB esque range finder, block breaker, channel hitter, press killer-everything. He’s special and it would be a real shame to not make the most of that. In my humble opinion. I also think one of Mainoo, Wharton (my favoured choice) etc should come in and partner Dec.
@charles94895 күн бұрын
@@harveygration One of the Best "Creators" on the Planet and yet at 25 cant get into a midfield, I wonder why.
