BFV was an example as to what happens when you betray several years of loyalty to a great game franchise. By abandoning their main audience in an effort to try and create an experience for "everyone" they effectively ostracized the community that gave them their success in the first place. And the best part? The audience they tried to pander to didn't even know, nor really care, that the game existed. And now that Battlefield 2042 has also flopped, you can bet they're just completely stupefied by the whole thing. Unable to wrap their heads around exactly how and where it all went wrong.

A WW2 game will always be political. Usually anti-war, world at war is a great example beats you over the head with it. but they tend to be very basic politics that most people can agree with, and definitely not identity politics like this game had.

Nah 2042 broke the franchise, BFV just pissed people off.

I remember all the neggers saying WW1 would be boring... so anyway, I was right when I suggested that years before. Korea is another untapped one that can be sprawled out from the 1930's to early Vietnam. War stories be wild without the censors stepping in.

I’m in the minority of people who saw the trailer and actually liked it. As a gamer I’d played many many ww2 shooters and modern shooters and was a little jaded by the genre. So this felt interesting and quirky. That being said I also wasn’t an ardent battlefield fan in the slightest…I might have had a different opinion had a franchise I loved suddenly gone down such a drastic tone shift

You want WWII immersive stuff but something special for characters? Do a Jack Churchill story line... Want some lesser known stories? Do Lyudmilla Pavlichenko... They could have fixed the damn game with 5 minutes on google

Bf1 felt like it respected the war it was portraying and honored the people who fought, but bfv felt like they were making a joke of the whole war.

Not to mention besides being a pretentious douche Trevor Noah isn't funny, at all not even remotely, which is why he was fired from the Daily Show bc no one watched. 🤷

I'm sympathetic to the idea of developers who want to work on different, more interesting gameplay mechanics. But good heavens, if your boss says you have to work on the latest movie-game like Last of Us instead... you're not getting any mechanics. At that point you might as well resign, pick a different industry and make an interesting game in your spare time.

Very good points! I definitely think Sony needs to allow for more varied styles of games instead of the classic third-person-movie-game.

Um Trevor was not the issue, Jamie Fox has nothing to do with gaming either. That was a stupid point to bring up. All that brought up was your political views.

My simple two word explanation for this mess -' Marketing Degree'. It seems to me like oversight of that first trailer went to someone whose sole qualification was a degree in marketing, instead of to someone with an actual clue. Having playable female characters ... I was rather "Errr" about that, but OK, not the worst thing in principle. There were instances, and "realism / historical accuracy" take a beating in these things regardless of what is claimed. But DICE just went completely over the top on showcasing customization options. They could have dropped in a few quick odd bits here and there in passing, deliberately made them low-ley instead of practically bill-boarding them, and people would be picking the trailer apart for ages, speculation running rampant. ("... Could that be a woman soldier over there? ..... And what kind of jacket is that? ...etc."). And, of course, "If You Don't Like It, Then Don't Buy It." Beyond stupid.

The thing most folks dont remember or understand. They messed up when they made Battlefield One. They had explicitly asked fans what they wanted and WW1 was the very last thing with almost no support. They drove away the actual fan base and left it with the whiny manchild group that usually drifted around CoD. These were the folks that got their panties in a twist when a character model was a woman. Add in horrible monetization and a lack of involved marketing and well. Here we are now.

"...in a WW2 you have never seen before." that alone should've been the dead giveaway for the last holdouts that were still hoping that BFV would be good. Also, saying that the most important thing in war is to "look badass" whether he was being sarcastic or not is perhaps one of the most disrespectful and insulting things you can say, given that its simple fact that war is hell and nobody should enjoy it, and the ones who do are either ultra apathetic, or are psychopathic. Sure, in wargames like these a very small amount of unrealistic but cool things are fine, as it helps register in the mind that its not real without fully breaking immersion, but when you want to go for an immersive war experience, you've got to go Soulsborne or Forever Winter if you want to portray the worst of war accurately, but pull back the numbing horror of the latter and eliminate the fantasy of the former. Now that I think of it, the recipe is to go back to BF1 and just add more stuff with the better graphics and play style and/or handling of the new games, and then make it just as gritty and harsh as WW2 veterans say it is, because its always the wisest thing to do to ask our elders who actually went through the horrors of war instead of the rose-tinted image of war that may or may not have come out of the Boomer and Hippie generations, excepting the veterans of the smaller but at times no less brutal wars that came after WW2. Hell, maybe ask IDF soldiers for some input on the atmosphere given what they're going through with their myriad counter-terrorist operations defending themselves from genocidal enemies.

The music kind of breaks all the seriousness of the trailer. I hate that. For example look at the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 2018 trailer. Unique music and shots. It feels like a story with the music changing lyrics and such, same goes to a lot of the shots. They show the game uniqueness

In terms of multiplayer I agree. But if we talk about campaing, man, BF 1 single player campaign, or so they called it "war stories" was an absolute horse shit, same with BF V. On the other hand COD Infinite Warfare campaign was pretty fun and well written.
