"The bloom will pull the oxygen out" Ma'am, you have no clue what you're talking about right then. Please don't try to *teach* others chemistry that you don't understand. That's dangerous.

This was so inspiring to see someone go from being scared of flash to being empowered by flash. That’s what it’s about. Flash is about taking control of the lighting. You don’t have to panic if you’re faced with bad weather or a dark venue anymore. For anyone wanting to start with flash I highly recommend “How to Shoot with Your First Flash” by Mike Hagen. Very beginner-friendly course. Also on CreativeLive. His other courses “Introduction to Outdoor Flash Photography” and “Introduction to Using Multiple Flashes” make for a great trilogy 😁

Illuminate your subject until you get the Ambient Light Meter Measuring f11. Whether this is with a strobe or continuous light. With Light Meter set up to Measure Reflected Light, Illuminate your backdrop With Strobes and Measure the REFLECTED light at F11. For an even lit background, you have established 18% Gray on your background. If you ONLY change the power on your Strobe light to your backdrop output by half down or doubled-higher by 1 Fstop on your background, you have a +1 or -1 stop exposure difference on the backdrop. 2 fstops higher or Lower, gives me +2 or -2 exposure. 3 fstops +3 or -3, 4 fstops +4 or -4 stops. If you add color to your lights for the background, that's called, "ChromaZones." 2 1/3 above 18% Gray is considered White. 4 2/3 below 18% is considered Black. You now have a starting point. "18%" For your Background light control, you now have predictable light control and predictable color control every time you measure the reflected light from the backdrop. Measuring Reflected F8 or F11 off of the Background are the best fstops to start with because its in the middle of the Fstop Ring on your lens or camera. Just be careful not to allow your key light to spill into your background light washing out your colors. lt's called Light Spill or Light Contamination.

for new people, you can do this very quickly if you set your camera to Manual mode, set the shutter and aperture, and leave the ISO on auto.
