Curly was incredible in this scene, but we need to give it up for the prop department!

"So slowly slowly she came up And slowly she came nigh him And all she said when alas she came 'Young man I think you're dyin'" Cutting the lyrics "you're dyin'" at the end seems intentional. I dont know whether in reference to Tiny Tim, or more likely Scrooge himself. But the whole scene is fantastic cinema.

If I were to create the No Small Parts award, given to film actors who somehow create memorable characters without uttering a single line of dialogue, I would give it to Teresa Derrington, who plays the maid in this scene. It was her second, and last, film role.

Beautiful thing about this movie. It is the one version of A Christmas Carol where each character has their own musical theme. This one (Barbara Allen) is supposed to be for Scrooge's sister Fran, whose death forced him to become cold and unfeeling towards everyone and the world. The song keeps coming up every time there is a scene referring to her or Scrooge's relationship with his nephew. And the song being about an uncaring woman who lets her true love die on his deathbed unrequited is a reflection of Scrooge's own heart. So him asking for forgiveness after all these years from his nephew's wife is really him asking for forgiveness from Fran.

All the folk singers use a folky county tempo and sing a much more simple melody for it. Has anyone recorded "Barbara Allen" with THIS melody?

Does anyone know if this version of this song exists as the complete song. Or if anyone else has recorded it as this duet, in the keys they're singing?

I only wish that this gorgeous version of “Barbara Allen” could have continued on. The verse that begins with “So slowly, slowly she came up” introduces a harmony vocal by the male singer that grabs me every time. I have always wished that I could hear the remainder of the song with his harmony vocal sung in tandem with her beautiful melody.
