After chasing a recording contract in NYC (Ian Dunlop described it as being like knocking on a door till their fingers bled but nobody opened it) Gram and the band headed for Los Angeles. Still determined to cut a modern country record, Gram made a deal with Lee Hazelwood. Not much money for the band, but Safe at Home was the fresh and original result. Unapplauded at the time the album is now recognized as a bold forerunner and the reason Gram Parsons is recognized as the godfather of country rock (Don Henley's words).

Summer of '78 they played in Cason,Texas....they were giving these away ...i had like 60-70 of em...only thing i left them in my glove box....oh did they warp!!!

This album represents Alex's art as much as Big Star or Box Tops. I look to this album as ROOTS music and one of his best!
