I LOVE the simplicity of this design and it seems like a nice bang for your buck/time invested for certain! I have limited experience in anything that is "structural" in nature. My question is, with this particular design with the weight of the vehicle coming down onto the cross pieces unsupported by the angle iron, have you or anyone else experienced any issues with the welds failing? In my mind it seems it would be stronger (and safer) to flip it over and have the bottom of that angle iron actually support those cross pieces. The vehicle would be driving over the "peak" or "point" of the cross pieces opposed to the "open V" part of it. What are your thoughts on this? Maybe there's no right or wrong way to design this?? I do realize that if your weld settings are good and you're getting the appropriate weld penetration that there is great strength there. I only ask and bring this up as I've never built these before but I'm very interested in giving it a shot. Thanks again for your time and once again thanks for your video's. They're inspirational.

First of all, THANK YOU for sharing all your experience! I'm a total NOOB. I've had a tiny hobby "welding/art" shop for a few years but have decided to scale things up and I just purchased a 4'x 4' cnc table. It's being delivered next week. I realize and expect a TON of growing pains as I not only try and navigate all things pertaining to the actual cnc table but also with all the computer programing. I've watched a few of your videos and I feel you've done a good job simplifying things and not to mention giving templates for free! I need the repetition to learn. I have a question regarding this design. What is the process to create that "backing plate" for other designs? Also, when using/designing a "backing plate" how do you create holes that match both layers?? Thanks again for all your efforts in education us.

I can make you a video on backing plates and some tips on drawing ect. I am launching a new website within the month that will assist people just like you! Tips, tricks, tutorials ect and free stuff to mention just a few. But I can make you a video of this specifically. tinmanmetalworks.com is the website address. there are free things on there right now BUT the entire site will be getting a facelift within the next 30 days. Visit there now and again and keep an eye out for the updated version coming soon. I bet it will help you immensely. And thank you for watching as well as the compliments

I really like your videos, but in my area, there's like 10 other people posting trailer ramps on Facebook marketplace. Seems like market is saturated because the product is too easy to make. It seems you have to make a complex product that other people will be unwilling to reproduce, otherwise there's just too much competition which drives the prices down. One guy on marketplace here is selling those same ramps for $100. Not worth the time.
@tinmanmetalworksАй бұрын
Maybe you can try posting your ad in a different way... Try adding things they cant do like a name tag on them. Maybe they are making theirs out if 1/8th inch? I use 3/16. Maybe make a post for $90.00 and that would be for a single ramp 4 ft long. Upsell them into 2 ramps and add a per-foot additional price. I list mine for 5 foot long and 40.00 per additional foot. That ads up quick and makes it worth my time. The trick to posting an ad is to get them talking to you and then up-sell them. Once they start talking to you, you should be able to hook most of them. Also, id message the 100 guy and act like you are looking to buy.. see what he is making them out of, What are his up-sales? Id find it hard to believe his 100.00 price is for a pair of ramps... Id see what he is ACTUALLY selling, not just what his add says. ;)

Great job explaining things in Solidworks. I would like to add something you might find of use and that's the s key shortcut. By pressing the s key you will bring up a popup menu of the most commonly used menu items like line, arc and smart dimensions, right at your mouse position. No need to move the mouse over to the title menu to select the desired function and then move it back to position in the drawing, just press the s key and then select the desired function in the mini-menu that appears. Also similar to how you can define one line equal to another you can make a dimension equal to another and/or a fraction of it by using the dimension name and math symbols along with numbers in the dimension field. "d2", "d2/2", "d2*2", etc. CAD/CAM can be a real time suck if you aren't proficient at it and it really annoys me that so many companies put learning these software products behind a pay wall... It's great to see so many how-to examples for free, for everyone to consume.

OK, so spend $35,000+ on tools, then buy $6890 in metal so you can build and sell a truck bed for $7000? OK, got it!! ROFLMFAO!!
@tinmanmetalworks2 ай бұрын
@patrickm.8425 Actually, they cost me about 1200.00 in metal to build one. I'm in my tools somewhere around 12k in tools ... but it's based around people who already own a cnc plasma table and a welder. ..
@leftylattin2 ай бұрын
Tools regardless of trade are an investment. Its either a time investment because they make the job shorter(if i sell something for 100 bucks and it takes 10hrs to build thats 10/hr. If i can get it down to 1 hour thats 100/hr). Or its an investment towards quality. I can drill all my holes with a regular drill, but knowing every hole is dead on straight just makes it all fit together a bit better. Better quality builds fetch higher prices for your work. Or its an investment in your whole life. Weve got thousands of dollars worth of tools in our shop, literally nothing i cant fix on my car or home. I dont think i have ever paid someone to come fix or do anything for me. Ive had friends and family ask me to help them do something at their house before, i say sure and i look at what they need, figure out what tools i need and ask them to show me to their tools so i can grab what i need. They will either take me to the garage or tell me to wait there and turns out all they have is some unopened molded plastic box of crappy tools from walmart. Also its not like you buy 35k+ worth of tools all at once. Its over time and getting the really spendy stuff at auctions and fb marketplace for super cheap. If you set aside some money every month to buy tools (and learn to use them) you will quickly find out you not only save thousands and thousands of dollars not needing to hire someone to fix your stuff, you will also have the option to make money with those tools making or fixing stuff for others. Seems like a nice little way to make some money if you ever really need it.

People that complain about having to buy tools crack me up. How do you expect to build or repair anything without tools? Quality tools last a lifetime and work on job after job after job. A tool might seem expensive but it pays for itself 100 times over during the course of its lifetime.

your main frame rails are 3x2? and looks like 3/16"? I see that CM uses 4" 3/16 for the main rails. Other plans I've seen use 11ga for the main rails.
@tinmanmetalworks3 ай бұрын
i mostly use 2x3 .120 wall for the main frame rails. It has a tinsel strength of 26,000 LBS per Square inch... The suspension on the truck will give out way before the bed does... When you install the bed this is adjusted on the mounting of the bed. Most in my experience need shimmed higher on the back than in the front as most of the time the mounts are lower in the rear. So all of this is adjustable on install. The tires certainly wont come up and hit the bed at that height. I think different people use different material based on how they install them, not so much "how tough" the material is perceived to be. If that makes sense ..... Did that answer your question?
