I've gotten about 2hrs last night and so far it is a walking sim, HOWEVER, its a walking sim that you have to pay attention to *how* you're walking. I'm sure more mechanics will open up but its core gameplay is so gamey, like a test of skill. Its so refreshing to me as I've been on a jrpg kick this year. The story so far is batsh*t crazy, even for Kojima standards. Hopefully the game will have a database for terms, lore and characters.
@dualshooter24612 күн бұрын
There are additional mechanics, but I would say the early game will pretty much sum it up. It doesn’t change as much as I would have liked.

"The Evil Within hits everything you'd want from survival horror". What? This game is not survival horror. Not even close. It is a hyperlinear action adventure game with a horror set dressing. Basically horror Uncharted with all the scripted set pieces and super linear level design and the constant interruption of player control with cutscenes and walking simulator sections. There is absolutely NONE of the survival horror DNA or Resident Evil 1 2 or 3 in it, or Silent Hill. No complex interconnected level design, no backtracking, no puzzle solving, no inventory management, no keys to find and keep track of what doors to use them on later, nothing. The game has limited ammo but that doesn't make it a survival horror game. You people have criminally low standards.
@dualshooter24612 күн бұрын
I definitely don’t agree. Not everything has to fit under the same bucket either. Changes within in a genre are pretty normal. Imagine, if you have to follow every trope in a genre? Then you would be playing the same game. Maybe we don’t have low standards, maybe we just allow ourselves to dive into different ideas and not project what we want/ or what we have experienced before, to something new.
@avelonzx2 күн бұрын
@@dualshooter2461 There is an inbetween option between following EVERY single trope from a genre and following NONE of those tropes. Evil Within follows NONE of the survival horror tropes. It is simply not a survival horror game and is one of the reasons why it is not rated well among fans. It had shady, misleading marketing before it released. Shinji Mikami coming out and talking about how he is going back to the real survival horror roots, how he is tired of all the action elements bla bla bla, while bringing out the most on-rails, scripted action-packed horror game of all time, lacking any of the exploration, puzzle solving, backtracking, complex level design or any of the staple survival horror mechanics while adding RPG junk like levelling up your character. You are supposed to be underpowered in survival horror, not becoming an overpowered action hero upgrading your stats. You are supposed to AVOID killing enemies whenever possible, not get rewarded for killing them with shiny loot every time. This game is not survival horror and is so rightly criticised for acting like it is one. As an action adventure game, it is decent if you are into that, and a horror setting for that genre is pretty unique. NOT survival horror though. This game has about 10x more things in common with Uncharted or God of War than Resident Evil 2 or Silent Hill 2, the PEAK games of survival horror. You take a game like RE2 and then you take out literally EVERYTHING that made it good and made it what it is and then pretend that it's still the same kind of game is either stupid or misleading.

Too often these reviews that claim OoT to be the greatest game of all time are steeped in nostagis; people cannot seem to review this game without mentioning "mah childhood!", which instantly takes away all objectivity. I like that you approached this with fresh eyes, as an adult, and was able to give a balanced look on the good things about OoT, as well as those negative things that people with nostalgia lenses often overlook. If you liked OoT, do yourself a favor and play Majora's Mask, it is the far superior game!

@caistigh206216 күн бұрын
Something I think you forgot, or just didnt think about in regards to the stumbling blocks in the game. Unclear directions etc... This was the 90s. We spent weeks, sometimes months beating games without any guidance. It was a collaborative effort oftentimes. Take Jabu entry as an example. Nobody says "you should give him a fish". But almost everyone says Ruto was in charge of feeding him. 10 kids in a neighborhood would see this. 9 wouldn't have any idea but Billy would. Or maybe he'd think "oh wait, that means nobody is feeding him!" and would give him a fish for a joke and get swallowed (the latter was me, I thought it would be funny) Then, that kid would see his friend and go on about how he was INSIDE THE WHALE WHAT THE HELL DUDE? Then they'd pass along the message and everyone would figure it out. It was almost an expected feature in games for there to be some random bullshit obstacle you almost had to solve by accident. These days that wouldn't fly but it did then.
@dualshooter246116 күн бұрын
For sure, and I intentionally didn’t look stuff up when completing the game. Some have brought this same concept up in the comments, and I had this same thing with the pokemon games(in terms of sharing knowledge, rumors, etc). I don’t hold it against the game too harshly( via the perfect score) and I was easy on it because I love the souls games. Which can be super obscure in that respect and wouldn’t be fair to like it on one series and hate it on another. When very clearly Zelda has inspired that way of game design in some capacity. I think mainly my thought process of bringing it up, is that for the most part, the game spells things out to us, where to go , and what to do. Then there are a handful of moments that are not explicitly mentioned that really stand out due to the usual guidance the game provides. I agree with you 100% however.
@caistigh206216 күн бұрын
@@dualshooter2461 Yeah I get that, I was saying it more for clarity sake than as a dig as well if that makes sense. In an alternate timeline where this game released in 2024, those aspects would drop it to a 5/10 I'm sure, but as I say, that was pretty much expected. Much like how you don't fault Contra because you die every 10 seconds. Was optimized for the arcade, that's how it works! One more thing worth mentioning is the story. While I ain't gonna argue Zelda is formulaic and pretty simple, I do think OoT gets bonus points because it's THE Ganondorf. Twilight Princess Ganondorf is this one. Even Breath of the Wild. It's the SAME DUDE. There's always some chicanery afoot. He was sealed or in a time-stopped dimension or.. whatever. Point is Ocarina of Time Ganondorf is THE GANONDORF and I think that's so awesome.

However, I do have a lot of problems with it which is why I have it so low out of the top 10. I grew up playing the original wii version and I wasn’t a huge fan of the controls. The overworld and travel mechanic is probably the worst in the entire series. And it has a lot of padding and repetitiveness throughout the game that made it extremely dull for me as I progressed. I understand that the HD version fixed a lot of things but that only came out a few years ago which means for 10 years straight if you wanted to play SS you had to play the wii version which was extremely controversial and divided up fans which is why Breath of the Wild(the next zelda game) became so different. @RexSerpentum Most modern games suck, so that's a pretty far cry from a point in favor for OoT.

I think the game is just okay, it’s never held my attention the half dozen times I’ve tried to play the game over the years, from being a kid to now as an adult, I have never got more than 10 hours in. I think I just prefer the 2D type style for Zelda games. I played all the DS and 3DS games and have recently started LTTP for the first time, but all the 3D console games have never interested me. I also think in the “is it overrated?”discussion, Nintendo fans just overhype every single game they like. Feels like more of a Nintendo cult most of the time.
