I'm new to the maintenance team at our bowls club in Devon... Our green is not bowling very good at the moment as it's very bumpy and the bowls either track or stay straight on certain hands... can you give me some advice on what we should do please?

Fantastic insight of how you both got into greens management. Just one question. I belong to a bowling club in surrey and I would be interested to know what essential machinery would you not do without in maintaining the green. We have a Toro Greenmaster 1000 lawn mower and a green iron. Bearing in mind our club is like a lot of bowling club not awash with funds. Cheers

When do you start doing the bowling green restoration And if the bowling green has been tested and found to be 89% sand what do you do then would adding some top soil improve the quality of the green and help the grass.

You certainly put in lots of work. What's your speed mostly In the summer months. I play at craigentinny in Edinburgh and the green seems to have patches of lots of green grass it's like Islands and it's not consistent all over. There is some bare bits, the grass patches are closely knitted together. Hope to hear from you

It's funny to see David again after all these years. We were good mates as kids - living a few doors apart on Houghton Road, attending Houghton primary school and mucking around together in Hadrians Camp which was behind our houses. I haven't seen him for 40 years! Good to see that things have gone well for him.

What do you use to roll your greens
@turfmenuk9363
@turfmenuk9363 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren, I’m not a great fan of rolling greens as we spend a lot of time aerating so don’t really want to compact the soil structure. If you think about it the green gets a roll every time we cut it.

A great video with top tips. I live in Pilling nr Lancaster. We have a very sandy loam soil, that can be very wet and also dry. It’s tidal, but we do get moss and it can be a bugger to get shut of. It grows great pratas though. Take care fellas 👍🏻

Fascinating chat and not a bit boring. Can you tell me what concentration of Iron should be used to kill the moss and over what area it should be spread? Say for a lawn of 100m2--how much iron should i dissolve in what volume of liquid? Thanks for sharing your expertise..

Thanks for the feedback. On my lawns and bowling greens I aim for between 5-10g per m2. Now I’ve seen people put it on with a spreader but you must be sure that rain is imminent or you have irrigation. Personally I always put through a sprayer 5-10g per litre of h2o to be safe. If you require any more info the feel free to contact me. Have a great Xmas

@@turfmenuk9363 Great, thank you. You are the only one who gave me a straight honest answer to my question. It’s as if people want to keep the magic answer of how much iron we should use to kill moss. Thanks again. Can you apply it this time of year as my moss is thick with moss?

@@murtaghslawncare. yes no problem applying now. When I worked in the golf industry we applied monthly throughout the winter, also good at keeping Fusarium in check. If you can verticut after application even better but probably better done in the spring. Good luck and hope you’ve a good Xmas

Really enjoy learning about your program to maintain a bowling lawn. Looking for guidance with my own 120 x 20' lawn in Northeast USA. A couple of questions-- 1) Can you really get to sub 6 mm cuts with dwarf rye grass? In the NE USA golf greens are using bentgrass to get sub 3mm cuts. 2) Is your rye perennial or annual? What is your overseeding schedule and rate? 3) Your fertilizer application seems very high. Working thru your numbers -- 450 kg (2 x 225 kg) of fertilizer, lawn is 125' x 125', fert is 11% N. I calcuate nitrogen is 3.2 kg per 1,000 sqft (6.9lbs/1,000). Seems high. Is this for your initial spring application or for the entire year? 4) Do you have any knowledge or recommendations regarding using Dwarf Kentucky Blue Grass for a bowling lawn? Thank you for any response to the above and keep up the great videos. They are very helpful.

Nice vid, thanks for sharing. Can I ask what grass you have and what the soil is mainly like (sandy/clay etc) and what you use (if anything) to top dress?
@turfmenuk9363
@turfmenuk9363 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, over the past 3 years we have been over seeding with dwarf rye grass. Traditionally rye would be frowned upon as it’s quite a waxy grass thick leaf. Now seed firms are producing more fine leaf varieties that are fine enough for bowing greens and also hard wearing. Our soil is quite sandy with a certain amount of river silt in it. For the past 5 years we have top dressed the green at leaf twice a year with Mansfield dressing which is an 80 sand 20 soil mix. Hope this helps and if you need any more info then don’t hesitate to contact me. Regards Mike Turfmenuk
