Mark, thx for checking out the video! I doubt you will ever need that laser, these are rock solid units, there was a reason they were so damn expensive back then, the engineering, parts selection & build quality is 2nd to none! BTW, I'll take that factory remote to go with my unit plz lol
@mark9023 күн бұрын
@@luvradios thanks for making interesting videos. that's reassuring to hear about the laser, i had no problem thinking i could sacrifice the 520 for the 620 while it was being shipped. but once i got it i felt differently. so now i just have a 520es and a 620es. the remote is a dream in itself. metal faceplate, 1980s sony lux style.

I worked at the BSR factory in England back in 1975/76 repairing these things, the girls on the test line were instructed that it should pass all record selection tests with the sensitivity sensor set only at 12 O'clock. They used Rory Gallaher's "The Story So Far" (4 tracks) and a K-Tel record called "Goofy Greats" with about 20 tracks to test selection accuracy and lift. Stylus's do come up on eBay occationally.. 26:31 Are those orange capacitors low leakage types? I recapped the motor servo boards on my Pioneer RT-707 and RT-701 and did not pay attention to the fact 4 of them are low leakage types. Should be no more than 2 microamps leakage, the plain black ones are around 15 microamps. Both machines had speed problems after recapping until they were run for a few minutes, so I figured I did something wrong that was common to both. That is what happens when you order from the parts list and don't check the notes section.

I recommend a fiberglass "prep pen" or "nick sander" for the relay moving contacts. Gentle and effective. Also, I recognize we all have our methods, but I do think your file was a bit much. I use 4000 grit sandpaper (also have 6000 and 8000 but settled on 4K) and thin cardboard paper stock with alcohol and De-Oxit in the mix.

Those contacts on the relays are coated they are designed to have a mirror smooth finish to reduce arcing. When you filed them you pretty much ruined them. This filing will roughen the plating and cause them to stick from micro arcing. Why did you do this??? This is not the correct method of cleaning these! Of course it's going to work but by adding scratches with the filing you have done it will drastically shorten the life of these relays much more had you not removed them. People who send these units for repair obviously don't know any better, but as a technician in a QC lab of over 40 years this makes me cringe..
@luvradios7 күн бұрын
@@electrajojo you are correct but - that mirror finish was gone by 1986, I’ve been cleaning contacts like this for 30 years with not one recall, and if that pure DC hitting those contacts when the transistor went south didn’t weld them together doubtful normal use will.

I use my MESR-100 digital ESR meter for checking those relay contacts, as well as power switches. Measures down to 0.001 ohm. I have the Capacitor Wizard as well, which is good for going through a lot of caps very quickly, however it is hard to read under 0.1 ohms. Remember to turn the power switch off. I think I killed so many batteries those tiny self tapping screws to get access to the the batteries stripped out and got lost, so I hold it together with a rubber band from asparagus now.
@luvradios6 күн бұрын
I recently installed an LED next to the power switch as a reminder to turn it off, and just like you - mine has 2 of the 4 screw holes stripped out from changing those batts so much but i wouldn't trade it for anything, was a total game changer back in the day when I first bought it.

For three years I have been trying to find the driver transistors for my Sansui G-8700DB which is similar to this 9000. The 9000 uses 2SA968/2SC2238 T0-220 devices (TR-09,TR-10) whereas the 8700 uses 2SA968B/2SC2238B. I believe the "B" designates 200 volt devices. I have hesitated trusting those Chinese knockoff versions on eBay. Any modern subs for these?

For those looking for a solution to the switches, search MCS 3249 and you'll find one guy who used large open cell foam between the switches. Someone else used caulk backer (I think that what it was) and put a hole in the center for the button. I used the thicker closed cell white foam used as packing material, cut as strips and with holes. I stacked a 3'ish layers until the buttons had the right feel. All relatively easy. Now it works as designed.

When you remove that whole bottom plate assembly with all the mechanisms attached, do you need to unsolder anything or cut any wires?

Honestly I don’t recall , I did that turntable years ago but I would assume the tonearm wires are short and very frail, snap a pic with your phone before you unsolder so you get them back in the proper order.

Amazing Video. A friend gave me a real old BIC 980 that was nasty dirty. the top broke in shipping and the wood was damaged. So I set it aside for years. For my Birthday in December my wife gave a nice Kenwood KA 87 Amp. I then found a pair of Allied 3030 Speakers that were in great shape and refinished wood. So then that all worked great with my 1997 Radio Shack 100 CD changer. But I go this old BIC 980. I got it out and cleaned it. That took hours and it did not clean up very well. I tried it out and it ran!!!! But on shut down the arm glides back over the record the motor stops and the arm drops in the middle of the record. I had cleaned and lubed all the arms and levers. BUT I did not see the white rubber wheel???? Ah HA! I bet its got cleaner or oil on it. I can't wait to get back to it and clean that white wheel up, Oh I hope that fixes it. Thank You Great video.
