Great video, Thanks for sharing, May I ask what type of outboard bracket is fitted on transom, looks nicely positioned to not interfere with rudder👍

Thanks so much for going to the effort of filming this for us! We loved your presenting style; a bit like David from Cruising the Cut. Your videos are some of the most calm and informative on KZbin and I felt I learned something today. This morning I crewed on a Wayfarer at the Severn Sailing Club (their open day!) and loved it. Found your video looking for something about Wayfarers. Thanks again and please keep doing videos - can you do more about how you tack / gybe etc? You explaining reefing was a revelation. What a wonderful and challenging adventure, great stuff. If I might suggest....propelling the dingy with one oar can be done quite easily using a canoeists J stroke, or sculling over the bow.

Just bought my first sail boat wayfarer you make it look very easy I suspect it’s not as easy as it looks I’m going to practice on a lake before I go to sea,I have sailed before but a long time ago
@stevec-b62143 ай бұрын
Good skills - on reefing at sea (no criticism just interested) would it be easier/safer to motor into the wind if its a bit blustery? Nice crispy sails you have there, (must start saving up). Your aft deck looks big? (you climb onto it to start the motor) no way could I perform that manoeuvre ;)

This is one of my favourite Wayfarer trips. For any cruisers looking to broaden their horizons from inland and river sailing, this is a great one for feeling the effects of tide on navigation. Where you point is NOT where you are going! Fab vid Jonathan.

Thank you! It's a great opportunity to go somewhere a bit different. At some point I fancy doing a trip from the Deben or Ore/Alde and using it as a waypoint before heading back in to the backwaters.

Cheers Jonathan!! Looked like a good days sailing. From what I could see, it looked like you weren’t using any masthead buoyancy. Probably quite manageable conditions, but what your thoughts on this? Would you definitely use it if you were more remote? Any downsides?
@WayfarerAdventures3 ай бұрын
Thanks Rhys! The woodies are much less prone to inversion than the GRP boats, and after plenty of testing I'm very confident I'm able to right the boat from inverted alone, so for me I'm happy with the risk. Other people's assessment of the risk will obviously vary with their own circumstances!

Today, every stroll with a sailing boat is called adventure. In most Western languages. When I was young, adventure was something envolved with danger.

Jonathan: More questions on your set up! I notice that you wear a safety line ready to clip on to the boat if needs be. Could you please give a few details of how it is set up please? How do you attach it to yourself and, at the other end, to the boat? Is there an associated harness which is part of your life jacket or is it a separate item? The line seems quite short - is it coiled up in some way to keep it from fouling things? A question on your spinnaker stowage. Do you deploy the sail from a special launch bag or is it just from your average spinnaker stowage bag?
@WayfarerAdventures4 ай бұрын
Hi Jonathan. I only use the tether at night on offshore passages, where if one crew fell overboard the other might never find them. The rest of the time, it would probably be more dangerous to use it for risk of entrapment/getting tangled etc. The spinnaker is just kept in a normal bag- I don't need to launch it in a hurry. Hope that helps!

Hi there - smashing videos, thank you for sharing them. Can you tell me - which length Ronstan telescopic tiller extension are you using - 740mm - 1120mm, or longer? Trying to figure it out for my Mk1a at the moment. Thanks in advance!

Thank you! It's the 740mm version - seems to be the right length for me.

Great to watch! Could I ask you what type of device you use as a chartplotter? Do you have an electrical supply for it on the boat? I sail a Wayfarer single handed too. You make un anchoring look easy but I usually struggle with it. Any tips?
@WayfarerAdventures6 ай бұрын
It's an android tablet in a rugged waterproof case. It's not ideal as the screen's a little dim in the daylight, but I have backups on phones as well. I have a 12V leisure battery which I can charge all my devices from over several days, and I can charge that up in marinas. The best advice I have for anchoring is to stop the boat. Sounds obvious, but throwing the anchor out while the boat's still going forwards is a recipe for disaster! Bring the boat to a stop, head to wind/current, ideally drifting very slowly backwards. Then just lower the anchor over the side. Sometimes I'll throw it a short distance so that I swing to one side or the other. Obviously there's a lot to consider with where to anchor as well... Hope that helps!

really nice videos. I'm wondering , is it easy to right the wayfarer in solo if you capsize ? Thank you
@WayfarerAdventures6 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I can do it on my own quite comfortably. I make sure I'm never in a position where I might capsize when I'm cruising though - the boat and all the gear onboard would be fine, but dunking the outboard would be expensive! So I make sure I sail according to the conditions.

Moonshadow is awesome as already noted here. You always seem to have a good turn of speed and very little wake. Other than your expertise is she quite light versus a fibreglass build? I had a fibreglass Wanderer for about 25 years which was 👍 but seemed to get too heavy for sandy beach launching!
@WayfarerAdventures6 ай бұрын
Yes, she's definitely a smidge lighter than most of the fibreglass ones of the same age. Much stiffer which is a noticeable difference when sailing. She's been set up very efficiently with good sails and a well tuned rig which also adds a lot to the performance.
@wallace-bv4rl6 ай бұрын
@@WayfarerAdventures the rigging and sails do look excellent! I’m now sailing a quite ancient Mirror and it’s the exact opposite. Everything gives like crazy but then no capsizing! It’s Loch Sween and nearby I’ve done most of my sailing a great area and enjoyed your video, your trip with friends.

Nice boat! Having come of age in Penguins, Lightnings, and 210s, I like chines! And I like Wayfarers! She needs a proper chute, though, a real chute. Here's an idea...buy a used Lightning chute. Have your sailmaker take 6" off each edge and then resew the tapes. See how it works on your boat. You can always cut a little more off next winter, if necessary. I bet you'll soon love your new, powerful chute. You'll be flying!

Thank you! I'm quite happy with the Wayfarer spinnaker - I think it's the right balance between being having power in light wind, but still being able to use it in a controlled manner when the wind picks up. I've tried a larger one (from a 505) in another Wayfarer in a trip where we had a lot less wind (see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoTNlnZmm8igf9E&lc=UgzuVexHe37sRWn6KKN4AaABAg), but that was a fairly rare set of weather conditions to be out in!
