Turn that rope/rail into a T-post and the same knot gets a new name, the 'Cleat Hitch'. Though it does need a full turn around the base of the cleat to be a proper cleat hitch, otherwise it's just a clove hitch on a cleat which *_will not_* secure your boat.

Thanks, this video worked for me. The model and showing all the component details helped me to understand it. I saw the term "heave to" on a television show and wanted to know what it meant. I read several definitions and did not understand what they were saying. I watched another video and I was still confused. This video made it completely clear to me and I even understood why it can be tricky to implement.

Your bowline is actually a cowboy bowline, or left-handed bowline, and is a variation of the official bowline, per ABOK and others. The tail should end up inside of the loop. If you take the working end around the standing end from the right, it will result in the tail resting inside the loop, and you will not end up with the cowboy bowline you've tied here. I say this only because as a newbie learning these, it was frustrating to encounter all the misnamed knots and not be able to know when, if at all, the variation mattered in terms of the functional aspects of the knot. Even tiny variations result in a different knot, i.e. the midshipman v. tautline hitch.

I kept trying it your way and came up w/ at least 2 versions, including one that was correct. Embarrassingly, I guess it's all in how you dress it. @@captainsailnator

Give me til payday and I WILL buy this awesome book! The color version even. While I could never afford to sail in real life, this book could give me knowledge to sail in my dreams at night.
@captainsailnator2 жыл бұрын
When I started sailing I could not afford it too. So I cleaned boats and helping out at the Dock of a sailing School/Club and instead getting payed they teached me how to sail. After a while I could teach myself and for that I was alllowed to sail by myself in the evening. Then I started as a deckhand on a Yacht. And so on. Just as an inspiration . (I do not earn More Money with the colored Version of the book. Even less. The Print is just very expensive.)
