This is one of the greatest big band compositions and performances of all time, and the piano solo is a masterpiece.

I was in college playing lead trombone in the middle jazz band, and the director decides to use this tune to feature me. I was listening to this recording and playing along with it every chance I got, and when the big performance came, it was one of the best musical experiences of my life. Thanks, Carl, for showing me the way.

Through the years, I've come across shows and movies Ted Knight was in. A policeman in Psycho, an astronaut in the Twilight Zone, a newspaper writer on Highway Patrol. But his portrayal of Ted Baxter was brilliant. That final stifled sob is hilarious!

2:10 Dear Lord this is funny. Ted's reaction at that moment doubles me over with laughter. And the eyes at 3:05 convey his absolute horror at not being nominated. I can barely type this.

Ted was great in the 'Mary Tyler Moore Show' & in 'Caddyshack', he always made me laugh but I absolutely loved him as the lead in his own 80s family sitcom as cartoonist Henry Rush in 'Too Cloose For Comfort' (which he worked on right up until his passing. Pure professionalism & class all the way. He loved making the audience laugh. All 6 seasons of that show are on tubi to stream for free).

as a jazz pianist, if you're in a big band that has this in the book and you want them to love you, call this chart. They get to play two dang notes and feel like a superhero. Hopefully they're good enough to do the other stuff, too, but I did a little fist pump whenever this one came up.
