Great info John. I recommend taking one of Mudhole's in- person classes. It is well worth the $200.00 for hands on instruction. You get the rod kit with the basic tools, and blank and components for spinning or casting. They hold these classes all around the country. If there is one in your area it's definitely worth looking into. I took the class in 2019 and wish I'd done it sooner.

Building a rod is normally not cheaper than buying one. I think that should said. Def custom as far as colors, blanks, guides etc are more of your preference of what you want in a CUSTOM rod. Most things custom are going to be more expensive than something from mass production. But it’s much cooler to show up on a boat and say this is a rod you built. And even better once you catch fish on it.

@@NaiDiGuy - thank you for commenting, but maybe I misspoke. What I’m saying is that anyone can build their own high quality fishing rod cheaper than buying one.

@ I just got started last year and love it. I think it’s very cool but I have found that unless you are buying blanks and components in bulk there isn’t much of savings. Def you get a cool rod that you made to your own spec but I think for the average person buying a prebuilt rod will 9/10 times be cheaper. BUT all that to say that anyone who is already searching for rod building videos should def just buy a kit and give it a go. I’m going to get started on another build tomorrow. When you pull the tag through it's best to pull a little bit in the direction of your wrap. If you don't you can sometimes pull more thread through and end up with a little tiny piece of thread sticking out and it can be hard to trim of it's just a little tiny piece. Also what i like to do when is fray the thread a little before pulling out though. It flattens out better and makes it less visible afterwords.
