The reforms on removing the VETO towards majority voting is definitely needed. Hungary will find itself in a very difficult spot if Orban keeps going like this, i have NO idea what he has to gain from playing dumb games for his own benefit instead of making steps towards either negotiating with the EU or just flat out leaving the EU. And since we know that Orban isn´t really that much of a great negotiator or a fair politician to take other perspectives into consideration them i´m afraid he will drag his own country into a dark small corner and left to be undesired by the rest of the EU. The next elections in Hungary will not be fair and neither democratic in the media and towards other groups that he resents or simply hate.

The pigheaded approach to migration risks almost destroying Europe and gives extraordinary wide room for maneuvering to extremists. If these clowns 🤡chant about "protecting christian values" from the "homosexual takeover" of Bruxelles, almost nobody takes them seriously. But uncontrolled migration is different, it strikes at a deep core of the national and tribal instincts in people, and the vast majority of citizens agree we need strong borders to secure our way of life. Migrants are welcomed - it they pass the filter, can sustain themselves and respect our great society; no matter how compassionate you are, you cannot accept law breaking as a legitimate way of getting the practical benefits of EU citizenship. The recent, migrant instigated, antisemitic and gang violence we saw only adds insults to injury. At the core of the issue with quotas and "multicultural" iron fist was that the EU was using law to legitimize something that most citizens saw as unlawful and illegitimate.

I don't see anything positive in taking the nations sovereignty, it only creates more centralized power which undermines democracy at the base level and thus the will of the regular people, while leaving more room for lobbying. One can only hope that Poland becomes a net payer one day, as their economy is steadily growing, and then hold back the money on their part like was done with the money owed to them.
@ctepolitics
@ctepolitics Жыл бұрын
It's true that centralizing power carries the risk of facilitating corruption, disconnecting decision-makers from their constituents, and weakening democratic accountability. The same is true of democratic backsliding, as we are seeing in Hungary. Meanwhile, the EU remains a global frontrunner on consumer rights, environmental protection, and civic freedoms. There is a middle ground: strengthening democratic representation on the EU level through the European Parliament, following the subsidiarity principle and giving back responsibilities to the subnational level, and directly involving constituents in decision-making, e.g. through citizen parliaments. Brussels did not hold back money that was "owed" to Poland. As explained in the video, the Polish government kept breaking EU law and was fined by an independent court. Recovery funds are tied to milestones for all Member States, which are also agreed by Member States. If Poland does not like the rules of the club, it can try to change them - or leave. Of course, that would be a much bigger financial hit for them than anything the European Commission could do.

Good vid :) My (Czech) mom always said "Better to be ruled by a foreign Emperor from far away, than a local King close to home". It gives up more national sovereignty, but it makes sense, given that so much of our history was just puppet politicians building up their own little power base for the benefit of a single foreign power (usually Russia, and sometimes China a little) instead of integrating with the wider European world. From my perspective, it's a much safer bet than the petty tyrants we raise here.

If you think that gerrymandering isn’t unfair since the disadvantaged minority still can vote and could theoretically outvote the bias with 100% turnout, then the EU is perfectly democratic. However, if you don’t think the above you cannot escape the reality that the EU system is MASSIVELY rigged against the possibility that a popular vote dictates policy. One such mechanism is that the parliament isn’t allowed to draft bills. So whenever the Council wants something, they make it a package deal with something the parliament wants so they can’t vote for the one thing and against the other. That just isn’t democracy by 21st century standards!
@CrystalMaidenFeetLover86
@CrystalMaidenFeetLover86 Жыл бұрын
Imo you focus too much on the obvious, on the structure, and less on the incentives and the optics. The EU has been "abused" by national politicians many times as the best way to push through unpopular policies. They cry on national TV about how upset they are and how much they want to stop certain changes, only for their own party colleagues to lobby and vote for them on the EU level. Because once something has been established on the EU level there is 0% hope to fight it on a national level. In addition to that the EU "mainstream" is extremely leftist by international standards. While every group should believe what they want, the EU actively points out democratic backsliding in countries that are anti-LGBT or against Muslim refugees, while not doing anything about authoritarianism massively increasing in France and Germany for example. Those countries that are not part of the EU, but have certain market-conformity deals with it, have the best of both worlds and should not make the mistake of cannibalizing the little amount of democracy they still cherish by joining the EU.

@ctepolitics what countries want to integrate further (maybe even federalize) and for those who don't want, what could change their mind? Example: Poland is euroskeptic. But establishing a strong, well-funded european military command center whose main priority is guarding the eastern border of the EU could leverage their fear of Russia to convince them to integrate further. For italy, it would be establishing a strong border policy, for poorer countries transfering national debt to the ECB, etc Not sure if it is in your scope, but it is a video I have seen NOWHERE

While I respect the crux of this analysis and I am convinced it's true, i would like to point to an issue in the phraseology of the study regarding the information age and the opening up of less economically viable university degrees to more women. Now I imagine that the presenter of this video is just stating the study, so I am not crticizing him, instead i want to provide a different but similar perspective on whats happening. The phrase "these women became more critical of the structures that gave them their freedom in the first place, because yhey realized how many more freedoms they did not have" does not hold up. Having completed a humanities degree myself, I can say that what is being taught is not "critical thinking", but pure demolition abd deconstruction. Nobody tries to understand why anything was done the way it was in the past, nobody tries to rationalize why they think things can be "different" now, they are only taught how to dismantle and discredit past concepts with the nebulous idea that we will eventually "build new, better, ways of life", which have nit been seen anywhere, if anything, people now have ended up re-inventing the wheel as far as social norms are concerned. Secondly, a person cannot realize "how many freedoms they are missing". If it's a "freedom" that nobody has, then it is a non-existent fiction. If it demands that governments or corporations need to grant someone that "freedom", then it, again, isn't a freedom. I dont think it is crazy for me to argue that human freedom has a limit, which we may never be able to surpass. There are limits put on human beings by our biology, the laws of reality and the mere fact that we want to live in a society and under some economic system. This is not sbout capitalism or socialism or whether the state should be more liberal or more conservative, it is the recognition that ANY community of humsn beings will have a political, economic and social structure which will necessarily limit human freedom. Even a person that decides to live alone in the woods would have to live under the laws of nature in order to survive. Freedom outside the aforementioned bounds is thus enturely theoretical abd completely pointless to think about. People like the Violet girl in the example, think we can somehow live in a society where we all work 3 hours a day from home, take 6 month vacations, have a powergrid serving 350 million people being fuelled completely by wind turbines, while ALSO not filling every hill and mountain top with them and, at the same rime, nobody having any responsibilities or commitments to anyone else, because that would be "social tyranny". This is not achievable under ANY social, political or economic system. It is a complete fiction abd they must come to understand that.

Firstly I will say that I really enjoyed the video but I would like to point out some concerns of mine as to its integrity. I feel like cultural/communication studies = more critical thinking while techincal and economical do not is wrong. Fields like engineering, STEM, law and managment are filled with problem solving scenarios were critical thinking is KEY and a huge emphasis is given. Not saying that "Human" studies don't provide that as well but saying that the other group doesn't is really unfair.
@ctepolitics
@ctepolitics Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! It's true that STEM fields require (and train) critical thinking skills, but they are of a different nature than in cultural-communicative fields. While math focusses on concrete and abstract problem solving, students of the humanities are often asked to scrutinize and question entire social systems. For most natural scientists, the issue of gender equality is secondary. But for many social scientists, it may be their main scholarly interest. Economic-technically skilled people are perfectly capable of thinking critically, but they are usually less focussed on their own place in society than more cultural-communicative-minded people.

Right off the bat, a video sponsored by EU political interests can't be objective and will always be pro-EU, if they want to keep the money coming in, which they must. Furthermore, the theoretical question proposed is massively simplistic, as boiling down people to their jobs and sex overlooks a lot, if not most of what informs out decisions - nothing useful can be gleaned by answering it. Lastly, a lot of comments point out the clear bias extant in this presentation - as I would have expected, given the sponsor and the question posed. Conclusion: Watching the entirety of this video would be a waste of my time.
@ctepolitics
@ctepolitics Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that and too bad you won't give the video a chance! No presentation can be fully unbiased, but our goal was to give a neutral overview of the insights from an influential, peer-reviewed research paper that has clearly shown a correlation between fields of study/occupation and voting behavior. You might disagree with the conclusions or hypotheses, but from a scientific standpoint, a lot can be gleaned from the data presented in the second half of the video, as the relationships shown are statistically significant and hard to explain away. Finally, the EU is neither relevant to, nor did any institutional actor have an influence over the content of this video. Hope that clears things up!

To quote from the source of this data (Hooghe & Marks, 2021): "The logic of quasi-public goods is different from that underpinning the category of socio-culturalism. Many knowledge workers are sociocultural in that their job “is primarily dependent on communicative skills … [and] depends on the cooperation of her/his ‘clients’ (students or patients) in providing her/his services” (Oesch 2006, 268). However, the production of knowledge is not necessarily dependent on communicative skills. Whereas nearly all social workers and teachers (95%) are encompassed in the category of sociocultural employees, *only 28% of scientists,* 40% of designers and 65% of unconventional health workers *are sociocultural* as defined by Oesch (2006). Fourteen percent of scientists, 31% of designers, and 34% of unconventional health workers are small business owners or self-employed - categories that are not usually seen as voting Green-and a further 11% of designers and *48% of scientists are classified as technical,* rather than sociocultural, professionals." In the chart at 13:40, "physicists & astronomers," for example, are the small dot smack in the middle of the chart, at close to 21%. So all in all, even STEM scientists are disproportionately voting Green.

@@ctepolitics I've read that from your link for 2022. They've never defined what "scientist" meant in their research nor its composition. And the EUI leans heavily left, greeting with "equality, diversity and inclusiveness". All 4 of their departments are from societies and 0 stem. I believe that they've either contacted only internally or fudged the numbers to make their ideology more presentable. Plus in my experience CS and math lean libertarian.

@@abrvalg321 What I'm quoting above as Hooghe & Marks 2021 comes from an earlier (unpublished) version of the 2022 paper. The definitions and groupings for occupations are based on the internationally recognized standard by the ILO.
