When do sea run start?

Probably about a month ago in limited numbers. September & October should be good around times of fall rain.

Jeff, Appreciate the videos and effort put in by you. I am new to Bend, since March and struggling to land anything on the Metolious. Appreciate any insight on setups to use.
@dynamicphotography_
@dynamicphotography_ 17 күн бұрын
Set-Up insights for me are very limited. I use a 9ft 5wt budget Orvis and toss dryflies. I like stimilators, chubbys, caddis, and mayflies. On the Metolius I often use fluorocarbon tippet instead on nylon because the trout are smarter here than other rivers. I'm a fan of dryfly powder flotant. Other guys like throwing nymphs though. They do well with stoneflies, hair ears, prince, peasant tail nymphs I believe. On the Metolius, you have to use extreme stealth and move frequently. You have to be okay with no fish the first couple of visits and then start to get a better feel for how tricky it is. More experience = more fish.

Nice vids 👍👍 Would a 9’ 6wt (med fast) be too much rod for these river searuns ? Cheers

THX! Nope, not at all. 6wt would be very comfortable. Cheers.

Hi Jeffrey. I have enjoyed your videos over the years, and have a window in my work this coming week (July 31 - Aug 4), and I want to head to Bend to explore the rivers. Hoping the fires will allow this. Can you recommend any rivers to target, and specifically a general area of the Metolious? Any intel would be awesome! Thanks in advance.
@dynamicphotography_
@dynamicphotography_ Ай бұрын
For the Metolius, I would branch out because it will probably be crowded with the weekend crowds. If the crowds are not too bad, the areas around the campgrounds would be convenient. Otherwise, drive downstream and use fisherman pullouts on the side of the road. Also, you can check with staff at the Fly Shop at the Camp Sherman market. Buy some supplies from them though if you could. Near Bend, you can drive to the Fall River. There's a fly shop across the street from Sunriver. There's also nearby Tumalo Creek and Whychus Creek for lite fly fishing for small rainbows. Have fun.

@dynamicphotography would I need Columbia river basin endorsement to fish catch and release. I mainly catch and release trout, bass, panfish in ponds and lake but if some how I accidentally catch salmon or steelhead on Santiam river Etc would I get in trouble if a get one on the hook but I’ll release it. I mainly do it for the sport I don’t catch and cook

Yeap, it's required even if you stick to C&R. But the good news is that it is extremely inexpensive and goes specifically to habitat restoration and ramp improvements.

Hi Jeff. It's been a while since I enjoyed one of your videos, and am sure I've watched this one two or three times. Great stuff as always. I'm considering heading up to central Oregon from Central Calif. 3rd week or so in April, and am wondering your thoughts on if this makes sense and, if so, where to focus our efforts. Thanks in advance; really enjoy your work!
@dynamicphotography_
@dynamicphotography_ 5 ай бұрын
In late April, it should be okay. This river is largely unaffected by heavy rain or spring run-off. Since I mostly use dry flies, I would be thinking about Blue Winged Olives, March Browns, and similar. For nymphs, probably the standard stuff. There is a great fly shop in Sisters that could assist with that. There is another at Camp Sherman, but they are often closed midweek when I pass by. In April, the headwater stretch is still closed. On this river, the fish do not wake up early. No need to set up early. The fish move around a lot here too. Once you locate good trout habitat, don't stay there too long. Also try not to enter the water when possible, they can see and hear you really well here. These are extraordinarily smart trout. I would focus on bends in the river, swirly back eddies, around downed trees, and similar. Have fun.
@patsheridan
@patsheridan 5 ай бұрын
Thanks so much, Jeffrey. Is fantastic information. I'm wondering if there are other rivers you would suggest as well during late April.

Love you channel and your photography is stunning. Thanks for bringing us along. I've watched several of your videos and I've notice something that I just have to ask....why do you aggressively throw your flyrod into the water when you land a fish. It's your rod and you can break it into a million pieces if you like...just curious as to why you do that. Thanks again for a sweet video. I've fished that area several times.
