Re mainsail, as I sail solo a lot these days I bought a WinchRite electric assist winch device, point boat into wind, turn on autopilot and press the button and up the main goes slowly and carefully, makes life much easier as we get older, and great if short handed as well. One sail and the mojo returns I find. We all make mistakes, i tried to leave the pontoon the other day with a stern line still attached …. 😳😵‍💫🤬
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass Күн бұрын
We have left with a stern line attached as well 😄 but at least we have always remembered to disconnect the shore power! As far as the mainsail haul, we think a few lines and blocks were simply a bit gummed up through disuse. Normally, because we use them a lot, they are very fluid and easy to use. Hopefully they will get more use and free up.

The marina here is very good to us. Normally we are gone by now and not due back for another 2 or 3 months yet so we are not exactly "liveaboards" in the marina sense, but they are aware of our circumstances and we have been coming here for many years now.

Great as always. If you look at the economy living on a boat vs. living in a house on land. How big is the difference?
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 5 күн бұрын
I think the answer is "It depends". It is more expensive to stay in marinas and does not seem too different from renting. When at sea, the costs are much lower because the biggest cost by far is paying for your marina. On land, if you own your property and it is all paid off then you only pay utilities and taxes, but if you are renting then even in a marina I think the boat is cheaper. But the HUGE difference is that on land you get way, way more living space for your money. Even a one bedroom apartment is bigger than a 40ft boat. So many variables... In our case we think the boat is a touch cheaper than maintaining our land based property.

Thanks for reminders of Bangor Marina, spent a lot of time in that laundry and Andrea loved the bath. By comparison, the gents had a large communal shower area with two decent private cubicles with water that never really got warm ... been there four winter months before one of the staff showed me a trick, run around all the communal showers, push the shower button then use the private cubicle. This ensured the pipework was clear of cold water and every shower thereafter was lovely. Sure at busier times, showers are fab. Dropped three year old iPhone off quayside in Roscoff a few days ago. Low tide so no water in harbour but dropped 8' into rock and weed which cracked the screen. Apple want £350 to replace it ... they're having a laugh! Living aboard, just a much less complicated life ... and if neighbours start giving problems, it's easy to move LOL.

Is there much difference in relation to maintenance costs? Would marina fees be less than say renting a place? I assume they would be more than council rates or are these part of the fees? Anyway as far as wardrobe space is concerned when I was working, I would have definitely been with your daughter on that one. Now not so much. Again thanks, I like that I have to ponder about things, occasionally!
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 8 күн бұрын
It depends. Here in N Ireland it is all included because of how the councils collect their taxes. In England, Council Tax is collected directly from the individual. Compared to renting a flat/apartment, it is hard to say because no flat that you can get is as small as a boat 😄

Great tips. I've got to get one of those thermal cookers. Apparently they aren't common in the States cause I've never heard of them - or maybe I just need to come out of my cave more often. Was that a scrum board on the cork board? Developers, right? For android devices I prefer the pixel phones - not sure how cheap the older models are compared to samsung though, but they don't have as much stuff pre-installed, and you get updates quicker.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 8 күн бұрын
Hi there! The pixel phones that I saw were about twice the price of these ones. Thankfully I have now got all the cr#p off them although I had to decline about 20 EULAs and it reinstalled the TikTok app about 3 times on me. The US sailors I have seen use "Wonder Bags" to put their pots in, but MrD (originally somebody called "Dave") was British so perhaps that explains it. There is a website and I will put a link below but Amazon stocks similar products called "Shuttle Chef". They are expensive to buy (MrD is about £100/$130) but given the amounts of gas you save it soon pays itself back. It is better than a pressure cooker because it can be left unattended whilst underway and better than a standard slow cooker because it does not have to be left plugged in for hours. Scrum board you say??? 😮Agile is sooo over. Having said that, yachts are perfect for having a daily standup - there is not a vast amount of seating 😄 mrdscookware.com/product-category/thermal-cookers?wpam_id=1

Also be careful you get the correct type - they vary for induction, gas, electric, etc... There are other sizes mrdscookware.com/product-category/thermal-cookers?wpam_id=1

We have enamel mugs from my time in American Boy Scouts. All food is cooked under 30 minutes maximum preferably 15 to minimise gas usage. Table mats are anti slip eg to stop rugs, holds plates etc on table when rocking around. I love the privacy and price of an anchorage but it is Fantastic to walk off boat for supplies, laundry etc. Clothes that don’t wrinkle (much). A place for everything and everything in its place. Enforcement of minimal lifestyle, if surplus to requirements it’s off. funny thing is when we have been aboard for a long time getting into car is terrifying, so used to 2-6/7 knots going to crazy car speed. We also appreciate coming home to our palatial house and all the space . Wish I could be as minimalist at home. Maybe when I get a hot second I could get brutal. Our boys are fashionistas

A live aboard boat isn't that different from a home if it is done on a minimalist basis. I live in a small two bedroom bungalow with gas central heating, one built in bedroom wardrobe, one hall cupboard and some book shelves. There is the extra space of a hut and a garage...these luxury places make the big difference between being on a boat and on land. I can store all my hobby stuff with almost no limit. Sea kayak, two bikes, small sailing dinghy, umpteen tents and associated stuff etc Also, I like growing some tomatoes and other salad things in the greenhouse. I don't think I could live full time on a boat in this climate...Scotland...but could do it in the tropics if I could have aircon. I am not going to be able to buy a luxury yacht and move South, mainly due to requiring long term medical care which our great NHS is providing. So, I have to get my sailing fix by going for a week or two on boats owned by friends whilst being accommodated in a house.
