Running the RD-RX812 with a CS-M5100 11-51 just fine with a GRX 40T front ring (yes your chain will need to be longer). B-Screw isn't even all the way in (Its an Orro Terra C bike so your hangar may need extending)

I am tuning a gravel bike for my daughter. I wasn’t very satisfied with SORA R3000 derailleur shifting so under inspiration of this video I started testing alternative solutions (mixing sora shifters with MTB derailleurs). So far I have tested M3100 (easy to set, decent shifting, to many plastic parts IMO), M592 (tricky to set, not satisfying performance, decent build quality), M772 (very easy to set, still testing performance, very nice built quality). EDIT. I have reverted to sora derailleur. Just changed upper pulley and regulated it properly. XT had very similar behavior to Deore. I know that people modify cable routing in sora+shadow derailleurs combination but because of increased friction on the cable arm eyelet I don’t find it is optimal.

Actually, you can combine 9x MTB RDs from Shimano like the XT shown here with older 10x Road STIs like 105 5700/Ultegra 6700/DA 7900 etc. I am currently running an XTR RD-M972 9x with an ST7900 on a 10x Sunrace 11-36, works absolutely flawless

I appreciate this. I'm currently running a GRX 810 with an 11x40, but occasionally need a lower gear. In the past I have switched to a smaller chainring (from 38 to 34), at the expense of my top gear. I just ordered the GRX 812, and I already have an 11x46 on the shelf from an earlier experiment. This should be a better solution, and it will probably (hopefully?) improve my shifting a bit when I run the 11x40, which is most of the time. The GRX-810 is pretty impressive in it's own ways, I even managed to run it in 2x with 44x30 chainrings and 11x40 cassette. It had just enough chain wrap and did a reasonably good job in the back, but the front derailleur adjustment was a struggle. Something always seemed to find a way to rub. I enjoyed the range it provided, but I eventually gave up on it and reverted back to 1x.

Hi I have a trek Domane al 3 with sora components . I tried to go with 105 but it s too expensive. The idea of going with deore xt 9 speed is very interesting since deore xt is way better component than sora the shifting will improve . The question is should I keep the crankset with sora and the front derailleur sora and upgrade only the rear derailleur and the chain ; or should I go as you did with the grx ( which one did you used 610 or 810 for the crankset and front derailleur? I assume the rolling on gravel is pretty good but how about the road ? Does it roll like a road bike o a mountain bike . thanks for your answer . Greetings from Vancouver

To anyone reading this. 36x46 is NOT low enough for adventure, bikepacking, touring etc. And the jump from 37 to 46 is and will always be, no matter how much you want it not to be, stupid and uncomfortable. It is one of the worst cassettes Shimano has ever came out with and they are continuing to overcompensate for their poor choice by coming out with a full lineup of mtb cassettes with big cogs that have steps TOO CLOSE. The best mtb cassette Shimano has ever made is their 11-40t 11s. Pair this with a 42/26 crankset, and you’ll be much happier with evenly spaced steps, a low enough low gear and a high enough high gear.

Really depends where you ride. Last year I crossed Sedlo Pass in Durmitor, Montenegro with this setup (with panniers) and it was allright. And as long as grades are up to 8-9% it is ok, at abut 10% it becomes hard and from 11% and above its gets pretty bad. But I'm going to get 11-51. Gear jump doesn''t bother me at all. But I'd be happy to swap this for 42/26 any day! Do you know any widely available crank with this chainring combination? Widely available is a key as I don't live in US so any niche product from local manufacturers is out of question :(
@EricPeelMusic
@EricPeelMusic Жыл бұрын
White Industries ships worldwide with DHL. You can order any big ring 38-52 and any small ring 24-38 using their VBC crank. I really want to try 46/26 with the 40 cassette. Puts me in the 15-17-19-21 cogs for cruising efficiency and small steps. But the low gear is low enough and the high gear is a good overdrive for standing and pedaling on flats. That’s the other problem with a 36t ring paired with Shimano 11s mtb cassettes, which I ran for years. You’re forced to cruise in the 11-13-15 area. And you have no standing up overdrive gear. That sucks.

Forgot to mention, 26x40 is good to 16% for me with a loaded bike, which I encounter often on fire roads in the northwest US.

@@gearedforadventureOne question, I hope you can help me, comparing this derailleur with a Shimano XT M8000, which would be the highest range? I currently have a 1x11 groupset on a mountain bike with a shimano deore 11-speed cassette (11-42) and a shimano xt front derailleur, but I like the GRX, do you think the gearing is good or do I stay as I am? Postscript, I have a 34 chainring and I plan to put a 36, is it true that the greater the number of teeth there is greater wear?

Thank you. Definitely some nice ideas there. My 9-speed bike has another amazing feature: a crankset with 3(!) chainrings. Now that will probably trickle down to a lot of bikes, because it is brilliant. @gearedforadventure

Agree that the lack of a clutch is noticeable, but I wouldn't call it a deal breaker, especially considering the price of used 9-speed XT. Personally I'm waiting for the release of Microshift Sword. Derailleurs are clutched and gear range is nice (especially the low gears). If pricing will be reasonable I will convert the bike to 1x10 with Sword.

Thank you for doing this test. Going from a 11-40t to 11-46t, did you have to re-tune the 812 derailleur? The reason I ask is that I use 3 different wheel sets (Road, Commuting, and Gravel) and only want to put the 11-46t on the Gravel wheels and don't want to have to mess with the derailleur and chain every time I switch wheels. Also, to confirm, you added 4 links to the chain from 114 to 118? I'd imagine this longer chain would also work fine with a 11-40t.
@gearedforadventure
@gearedforadventure Жыл бұрын
yeah, I have 118 links. And it was necessary to finetune the derailer, but mostly by adjusting the b-screw. Proper chain length will differ between bikes, due to different frame dimensions. This one has 455 mm long chainstays, while most gravel bikes will have less than 435.
@corbinkoepke4598

@@corbinkoepke4598 not sure, but keep in mind I only changed the cassette on the same hub, but if you swap the wheels the new hub might have some micro differences in how the cassete is positioned on the freehub body, and this might affect the derailer performance.
