How do you find inspiration to create something on the deluge specifically, and/or where do you begin in the process of building something on the deluge? I ask because I finally just got a Deluge myself after hearing about the thing for years and having multiple friends swear by it, but I’m personally struggling to find inspiration on it. If I hear something I want to sample, I feel like pulling out my sp 404 or even just Koala on my phone. When I feel like building with synths, I’m often a little disappointed with the sounds in the Deluge. I am not trying to complain about this amazing device, and I am not going to sell it like I often do with other gear that I don’t vibe with right away. I want this thing to be my “go to” like so many others. I admit that I still have so much to learn on the deluge, I’m still a deluge newbie, but I’m even getting bored trying to learn about it because I just want to create, so I end up just putting it away and pulling out another device that I’m more fluent in using. I know people will just say to bite the bullet (or whatever that saying is) and don’t put it away, just keep using it, and I know…… but I guess I’m just looking for any advice that you or anyone else here might have that could potentially help me. Like I said, I’m keeping it and I. Will eventually love it, I know it, I see way too much potential in this device to just give up on it so soon. Last thing I’ll say which might help, I’ve always been a Maschine, SP404, pad-beating producer. I struggled with sequencers altogether for sooo long, I never cared to even touch one until I got the Torso T1. Noe I’m opening up a lot more to sequencers, but I’m wondering if some of my resistance to the deluge is just some old residual sequencer dislike that I’m still subconsciously holding onto. Maybe I just need advice on how to feel inspired by sequencing in whole. I don’t know! I’m just tired of feeling frustrated and uninspired. Typing this comment and seeking help has actually made me feel a little better all in itself lol. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Great question! For me, I’m coming from a more traditional band/studio background, so the workflow on the deluge feels very natural to me in that it’s very similar to a DAW/piano roll type interface that I was already used to. The thing I was struggling with in my DAW was too many options when staring at a blank screen. Will I record something fresh? Will I endlessly scroll my sample Library? Will I give up and endlessly scroll social media because it’s a tab away? The deluge is intended only to make music, and gets me off the screen and into the moment. A big thing for me was it really opened me up to the world of synthesis. I’m still learning my way around synths, but the deluge and its immediacy made it more accessible to me. Admittedly, the deluge is a bit complicated (with no screen) and it can take some time to learn your way around. And with the endless innovation of the community devs that list never ends… one thing I did from the start was watch RSKT video manual series. Discovering new (to me) or how to use certain features inevitably led to something inspiring I would chase down. When I was first learning my way around the deluge I would often center a session around learning a new feature and seeing how I could integrate it into my workflow. Maybe that meant making a song centered around creating all my own synths and kits from scratch. Or focusing on building a track entirely around the Deluges sampling features, etc. In this way I not only learned more about the deluge but also on which features mattered and inspired me most. I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling with inspiration as to me the deluge is itself an inspiration machine. More often then not, I don’t have a plan when I start up a session. Maybe I just find a loop I like and build on it. Maybe a particular synth sound peaks my interest and I chase it. Maybe a random press of keys in the sequencer turns out to be a really cool melody. Who knows! It sounds to me like you’re probably not suffering so much from lack or Inspiration as much as still struggling to see if a workflow on the deluge works for you. I think maybe you’re still holding on to how you could do things better or faster on gear you’re already familiar with. I’d encourage you to stick with it though! It’s an awesome piece of gear when you get your head around it! Maybe try to incorporate your other gear. The deluge plays nice with other gear. I have a bunch of songs from scratch videos in a playlist that kind of documents how I come up with stuff and what inspires me. Maybe give them a browse! Or my song sketch series. The earlier videos are all entirely made on the deluge. Best of luck and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! Cheers.

Ok - that helps (a 3rd way through) to conceptualise Song View as a scratch pad for themes and variations & details and then the Arranger as described where one moves these parts around on a canvas in a more linear Left to Right manner. Yay! I'm wondering if the fact I've never used a grid/cell format has put me off... 👌🏾

I do have a couple vids in my song from scratch playlist that are a little more ‘blow by blow’ style for arranging on the deluge (I’ll see if I can find some links) I was gonna (and may do) another but the truth is every song is pretty different. Great advice. I think I get caught in loop stacking thinking I’m not sure I have enough parts. One of the things that has really helped is to start arranging the track even before I think I’m ready. Really shines a light on where the arrangement sounds empty and needs more attention. Thanks for the video.

Good tip! Oftentimes starting an arrangement will reveal what you’re still missing. It’s interesting in the loop stacking stage, there’s no hard rule for when it’s enough but I can usually *feel when I’ve hit that point. But as you said, it’s very common that I realize I need that extra melody or lead after I’ve started arranging. Cheers!

@oaklandghosts0510 5 күн бұрын
Haha. Yup. I used to manually vary velocity before. You could also modulate master volume (or oscillator level) with random (don’t know why you can’t do velocity), but I kinda like cutoff cuz it also changes the sound of the hit. It’s also nice to randomize pan just a little so it’s like the hit is on different parts of the hat.

Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head when you said you don’t use the stock presets because they are underwhelming. I think that’s what a lot of people have and use though and that’s why the stigma is there. The Deluge sounds really good. Especially now with the community firmware new reverb, new filters, etc. I’m enjoying it a lot more. The stock kits that come with the Deluge I actually kept all of. They sound great. The synth presets I ended up ditching around half of them. Maybe more. Anyway, great video. I learned a lot about the practical application of Euclidean sequencing today. Thanks for that 😉
@oaklandghosts0510

Agree. Most of the kits are actually pretty solid (tho I tend to build my own on a per song basis.) Euclidean is pretty cool for generating quick ideas. Especially on hats. Love it for that! More Melodies it takes a lot of offsetting and re-writing, but it’s good for getting a great base to build on quick!

Ya, definitely not a starter semi modular synth. Feels a lot more like modular set up. Still wrapping my head around it, but I’ve managed to get a couple songs out of it so far! It’s got a super unique character to it for sure which I quite like and because it’s so modular you can really get weird with it! How do you record your jams? I’m looking for something now so I can start sharing songs I’ve been making!
@oaklandghosts0510
@oaklandghosts0510 15 күн бұрын
Great question! In general I arrange and compose everything on the gear you see here with the deluge as my main sequencer and arranger. I’m running everything into a tascam model 12 which I primarily use as live mixer and interface/input for my DAW (I use logic.) you could even record live/mix/master right into the tascam especially if you’re content with the mix coming out of the deluge. I tend to record what I play into my DAW to capture the live performance on the analog stuff and have it come in as separate tracks with the deluge stuff coming in as a stereo track. Because I arrange everything on the Deluge, I then go back and individually track all those elements in as separate tracks as well. Then we do final mix/master in Logic Pro (or whatever DAW you use) But like I said, with the tascam model 12, you could do it all onboard and completely DAW-less as well.
@devinwells9399
@devinwells9399 15 күн бұрын
@@oaklandghosts0510 thank you for that detailed response! I actually was looking at smaller tascam models as I like the idea of doing everything outside the computer, but seems like there are some benefits to doing things on a DAW with ableton or something along those lines. What would you recommend for my first go at things?

@oaklandghosts0510
@oaklandghosts0510 15 күн бұрын
@@devinwells9399I really like working DAWless when I’m writing and arranging too. I do everything DAWless on my end except finaling. The benefit of going into my DAW at the end stage is 1: having way better plugins but 2: as a band all my band mates are DAW based so getting it into logic and our cloud server for everyone else to be synced and able to add is huge. The main thing that drew me to the tascam line was its ability to pull double duty there. I could use it for me as a live mixer/recorder but also as an interface/input for my DAW. The one thing I’d suggest is definitely get a mixer with more inputs than you need to future proof. When I got the model 12, I was only using the Sound Studio and the Deluge (so one stereo input/2 tracks and 3 mono tracks) I thought I was input wealthy with 12 inputs then, but as I’ve added more gear I’m already getting close to capacity. If you use something like pedals for external effects, definitely look for something with dedicated aux sends (and preferably aux returns) the model 12 has sends, which it great, but no return.. so if I need to use one of my normal tracks for mono return and 2 for a stereo return. I use the empress zoia as my main fx on the analog gear so I have to dedicate two of my tracks as a return which is kind of a bummer. All in all I’m really happy with the model 12. Very versatile, had the most amount of DAW inputs at that price point, looks great, and totally suits my needs (and *mostly future proofed if I can quit buying more gear lol)

I giive a Thumbs up . . .but I disagree. Having purchased, most of the boards of deluge and scrolled thru them all up and down....this sounds similar to my ears. For a wildly different sound, we'd need different filters. I LOVE My Deluge, but not its own synth sounds. If it's fed samples, awesome, as a brain to my other synths and modular gear- outstanding. But by itself...meh

Def excellent as brains of a setup. It’s really a great sequencer and arranger. But I still really like and use its synths to supplement my tracks too. @oaklandghosts0510

Yes exactly. It actually held whatever the last note was in the arpeggio previously when I canceled it. Since the dynamics mostly acts like a VCA, when I opened it up it just kept droning. Really anything past closed will do this on the dynamics controller. I didn’t intend to go into a drone when I was playing but it was too cool not to explore further! The Taiga is def pretty cool. agreed. I've had my Deluge for about 6 years. Love it, and all the improvements they (and the Comm Firm) have been making but honestly, I truly wish they'd develop a software editor. It would be so much more efficient to see all the parameters displayed on a screen, be able to Copy & Paste groups of parameters, etc. All the involvement required to do synth programming is quite antiquated, especially now that there are so many different options. Otherwise, still blown away with the instrument's sound, layout, workflow and potential.......
